How do the point systems of WHFB compare to those of 40k? Does "1000pt army" have the same implications, or is it bigger, smaller?
In terms of a 'standard' game; I find that most 40k gamers view 1500-1750 points as the size of a 'standard' game. WHFB players tends to view 2000-2250 points as a 'standard' battle, as that's the level when you can include a Lord. By that logic, a 1000 point WHFB game is about the equivalent of a 750 pt 40k game.
Of course, looking at it from a purely model count perspective, it gets fuzzy, as gobbos are looking at a 4 point trooper, and can have a truly massive model count for armies, while Ogres will of course, have tiny model counts, as their points get poured into expensive troopers.
