Guys know when they start having wet dreams. It al happens around the same age as us, about 12. Although, it does depend on the guy and sometimes heredity.

Actually, Having wet dreams does not mean you CAN have children. Most "first" ejaculations/wet dreams contain seminal fluid, but it does not contain sperm, and sometimes might even contain a bit of urine.

But all in all, don't go unprotected either way ;D
