Day 1

The day she had been waiting for! Eier's Coming of Age Ceremony had come. She stood by eagerly awaiting to hear what her ceremony would be, and what she would do to prove her worth, and no longer be considered a child in the herd. Eier is more than ready! Skuld already had her Coming of Age Ceremony. There had always been an adult nearby, hidden, watching over her sister during her trial. Skuld had returned victorious! Now was her chance to prove herself, and join her sister in the rank of adulthood. Soft fox ears curled round, listening to the words the elders spoke to her. When she heard them, her ears pinned back as if she had been scolded. Among the words spoken, all she heard were these: "Defeat Skuld in one on one combat." Eier dropped her momentary discontent, held her head high, and nodded respectfully to the council. She could do this! She looked over to Skuld for that sisterly support, and instead, saw the fire blazing strong in her twins eyes. Eier knew that look. Skuld intended to take this seriously. If she would enjoy it, Eier did not know. There was no smile on her face, only the look of a warrior, ready to do their duty.

The buzz of the herd, excited to watch the ceremony and how it would unfold, moved to the area where daily combat took place. Eier had been here many times before, to train, and learn to defend herself. Now, she faced Skuld, but not for the first time. They had sparred together before, but not like this. Eier knew in her very bones, that this would be harder. Skuld was fierce, and had more of a fighting spirit than she did. It would not be for sport, or play. Though, she did not think Skuld would hurt her, she would not yield. The elders and council must of known what they were doing when handing out the twin ceremonies. Had Skuld been given the ceremony to defeat Eier, it would of been easier for her. Even if it proved a long fight, Eier was soft hearted, and more likely to hold back. No, they had pinned her up against a bear! Skuld was Eier's bear. In her mind, she sighed, but tried not to show any weakness. With a deathly loud pounding in her ear, she stepped over to the weapons rack, and chose her sword. Her and Skuld had always fought with a sword. Heavier weapons, like the axe, proved too much for them to handle. Especially under the weight of their headgear, custom made to protect the little foxes from harm. With sword in mouth, she turned towards Skuld. Oh spirits, don't let her faint! She bent her knees, when she realized they were locked. Endorphin's made her world glow with a white haze.

Before the fight began, it was over. All Eier could remember, was being on the floor, swordless. Nerves had bested her, before the fight could have a chance. There she stood awkwardly after all was finished, getting reassured by other Valkyr that tomorrow was another day. She'd do better next time! and other kind words of encouragement. Eier, at a loss for words, just smiled and nodded at them.

She had failed. The feeling of defeat was discouraging. When Eier and Skuld got back to their cubby of a cave for the night, Skuld carried on like nothing had happened. That's so like Skuld, keeping things professional. Eier curled up on her pile of pelts, and laid there trying not to think about the combat. Or worse, think of the next time they fought! Trying to remain positive, she convinced herself that tomorrow, she could do this!

Day 5

The crowd had not wavered in attending the arena, to watch the twins partake in combat. That part didn't help Eier relax, and focus on the fight. Four tries in, and the one thing she was good at doing, was loosing! Yes, in the eyes of those around her, this type of challenge wasn't a loss, but an opportunity to be coached on areas to improve. All to try and be victorious the next time. The tips helped her, but not enough! She still hadn't bested Skuld.

Today she pushed herself hard, she pivoted, she parried, she blocked just as her elders had instructed her. Eier felt a glimmering ray of confidence, when she didn't fall to the ground instantly. In the end, it hadn't been enough! Skuld still won.

That night, Eier did not remain quiet, refraining from conflict like she did so much of her life. Her and Skuld got in the biggest fight they had ever had, without the exchange of combat. The yelling ended with Skuld leaving their cave... Eier wasn't even angry! Just frustrated, and overcome with emotion. Eier, alone, lost herself in thought, reflecting on everything that had lead up to this moment. Perhaps, she would never win, and never be an adult. .

Day 9

Attendance started to thin out to the daily bout between Skuld and Eier. Did they think that it would end the same each day? Eier thought as much. Faith in herself, and defeating Skuld had waned to an almost non-existent degree. The past three days, it was obvious she already anticipated defeat. Her elders did their best to encourage her, and offer their wisdom to help her. Eier needed to help herself though, and their words didn't seem to change the play by play. And what she really needed, was Skuld's support! Which she didn't have. Skuld hadn't talked to her much at all really!

Today, Eier looked at the weapons rack with tears clouding her vision. Skuld had still not returned to their cave, since she left three nights ago. Eier was so frustrated with her, that the tears came streaming down her face. She wasn't sad...she was ANGRY. With a snap judgement, she grabbed the spear from the rack, in place of the sword. With an about face, she marched to the center of the arena, firm, and ready to get this over with! Perhaps they would give her a new way to prove herself, if she kept failing over and over...

Skuld went to charge at Eier, and Eier pushed the spear towards her face with a grunt of rage. Blood filled her ears, and the pressure in her veins pounded. Every time Skuld came at Eier, she pushed her away. "NO, YOU LEFT ME!" she exclaimed as she regripped her spear with her mouth, and forced Skuld back. Rage and tears painted Eier's face. Dancing around Skuld, she made sure she couldn't come near her. The clang of metal on metal echoed across the silent crowd, as more and more began to gather around the arena.

Skuld slipped her blade under Eier's staff, aiming to take a low blow under her. Eier caught Skuld in the mouth with the pole, and knocked her back on her rump. The smack was so hard, that Skuld had dropped the blade. Eier reared back to tower over her after the swing, with the blade at the end of the pole pointed at her sister. Skuld made a sound of shock that quickly turned to laughter. The palpable silence turned into one of whinnies and shouts of approval. Eier had been lost in blind rage, breathing heavy. She was SO MAD, it took her a moment to realize what was happening. It was over, she had won. She did it! Skuld grinned up at her. Eier, dropped her pole, and began to shake, then laughed and cried all at the same time. Skuld had gave her just what she needed to succeed! Eier had left her kind nature, and soft heart behind today when she came to the fight, and it had worked.

Eier went to her pouch of herbs, and poultices, grabbed a salve, then pawed some on her sisters lip. There was no apology given, only a thank you. <3
