Sunshine took a deep breath, enjoying the crisp taste of the air on her tongue. It was refreshing, sending waves of anticipation shooting across her body. Ahh, winter. One of her favourite seasons. It always surprised others to hear that, given her bright appearance, but actually she greatly preferred the cold and the dark. Perhaps it was just comforting, or perhaps it was because all her closest friends in the carousel herd had been on the night guard. Whatever the reason, she was enjoying this cold day.
Before her stretched out the lake. She could just about see the far bank if she squinted, but it wasn’t too deep. Usually, the water was a crystal clear blue, one that you could see every grain of sand through, but not today. Today it was completely frozen over. The ice reflected the sun’s rays, creating a sheening, brilliant surface. It was like a giant mirror, beautiful and enticing.

As soon as Sunshine heard the voice beside her, she immediately did a dainty spin on the spot and threw a giant smile on her face, before immediately dropping down one knee to put herself in a deep bow. It was not a standard greeting, by the way of the Kawani lands, but she had spent years greeting everyone in such a way when she had worked for her herd, and it was not a habit she wanted to get out of. It was graceful gesture, well practiced. And just as spryly, she jumped back up onto her hooves, her movements nimble.
“Pleasure to meet you, my name is Sunshine!” And with the formalities over, she relaxed her pose somewhat and turned to face out over the lake. “I don’t know. It certainly looks interesting. Did you know some people enjoy going out on the ice? They call it ‘ice skating’ and slide around on purpose.” She gave a gentle laugh, pondering the concept. Was it possible?

Sunshine perked up her ears. Now that was an idea. And, if something did go wrong, at least they could help each other out then. Yes, that seemed like a good notion. She crept over to the very edge of the ice, gently resting the tip of her hoof on it. It seemed steady. She applied a bit more weight. There was a slight crunch as some of the snow drift compressed beneath her hoof, but it wasn’t the crack of ice. Yes, it could probably hold her weight, she decided.
She turned back with a huge smile. “Yes, lets give it a shot! What’s the worst that could happen?” She cautiously put another foot on the ice, feeling it out. It was… fairly okay. She seemed like she had a decent grip. She stepped forwards with more relish, and felt her hoof suddenly go sliding out from beneath her. Luckily, her back hooves were still on the bank so she quickly regained her footing without ending up flat on her face. She let out a laugh. “Slippier than it looks! This should be fun.”
