This is a private roleplay between belloblossom's Eleanor and Valentina and ABVirus' Serenity.

If you are neither myself nor Virus, please don't post here. Thank you.

Eleanor didn't always stay up late, but whenever did, she always found the most interesting of adventures. The grass would turn silver in the moon, ignite and everything would be painted blue. The stars above made pretty pictures in the sky. Ellie loved it. Valentina did not.

Her buffalo had taken to giving her the silent treatment. Val, Ellie's self-proclaimed protector, went everywhere with her at any hour and to say place, but that didn't mean she liked being woken up in the middle of the night to hear her bonded going out on a late night parade. She would much rather be back in the field with Sita and her raccoon familiar, but noooo. Well, it was what it was. They were out here now and keeping track of the pink unicorn she bonded too couldn't be that hard. Keeping her out of trouble on the on the other hoof was a different manner.

"Eeeeeeee!" The sudden outburst startled Val into action, running to where her bonded stood, ready to find some horrific foe. Only... At her cloven hooves was no foe, but instead a... "A basket! Val look, it!'s a basket!"

Val looked at the basket and sniffed it. It didn't smell like anything in particular, but a firefly flew up her nose when she moved to close, causing her to sneeze and snort. Come to think of it, there were dozens, maybe hundreds of fireflies flittering about this wooded clearing. They all seemed attracted by the basket, maybe a Flutter foal was growing inside?

"I wonder where it's mother is..." Ellie thought aloud, echoing Valentina's next thought. "I don't see her anywhere? Hello?" The only sound was that of the lightning bugs buzzing quietly. "We shall have to keep it then. Oh, I've always wanted to be a mother and Sita will be so delighted!" Ellie began to nudge the basket gently the way they came. Valentina looked warily about. If a mother or father came back looking for the basket... Well, she would return in the morning and explain what happened. Turning, the buffalo left with her bonded, wondering if they had just adopted an abandoned foal or kidnapped someone else's.

Despite not being yet conscious, the basket Eleanor had found had a story. Unfortunately, the little one inside had no idea of his past and so the unicorn that found him would never know either.

As it had happened, the basket had originally belonged to two very odd parents. One was a lover of the night sky and all its wonders. The stars fascinated the little mare and she was nocturnal by nature. Though the foal inside the basket would never know, his mother had been named Luna Roo. Her mate was in all appearances, a beetle. No one was quite certain what he was, maybe some exotic type of Pixie-corn? Whatever the case, all he had to do was blink his tiny horn and make obscure chittering noises and bugs of all sorts would be flying about his face in no time. His name, appropriately, had been Beetle.

As previously stated, they had been very odd, but they had also been very much in love. Luna Roo had shown Beetle the stars and in return he had introduced her to fireflies. They fell in love almost instantly and decided that very evening that the first foal they had would be named Lightning Bug.

You can imagine their great delight when they had their first foals. They knew the baskets were blessed by the spirits when they saw how the baskets attracted the fireflies they both loved so much and one of the baskets itself seemed to glow. By all appearances, it was supposed to be a happy tale of a mini family with a lot of love to go around.

Alas, it was not to be. Neither of the parents could have predicted that the gentle rain that started one summer evening would turn into a harsh rain for days and nights aplenty. They couldn't have thought the river they lived near would flood and that their precious baskets would get washed downstream in the middle of the day, when Luna was sleeping and Beetle was off bug searching. When he returned, the couple was frantic and searched down the river for days, but only managed to find a single one, washed up near the reeds. The other was lost to them forever.

The couple eventually had to assume the worst and heartbroken as they were, they still had another little one they had to raise. They thought they were cursed when the fireflies left them suddenly, but the glowing bugs had not yet given up hope. They still searched for the mini basket and after much time had passed, they finally found him on the west, rather than the east where his parents resided. But by that time, another had found him too. The fireflies split up then, some staying with the basket and the others returning home to inform the parents. They would find each other again, the fireflies promised the basket, but for now it seemed like they were in good hooves.
