Itzamatul frowned as he shifted his grip on the stick. He had a look of intense concentration on his face and childlike determination. He wanted to hold the stick the way he'd seen the raccoons doing it. Only, they weren't holding sticks with claws. They were holding quills with hands. Just by looking, you could tell that a raccoon hand was better made to hold something than his own claws. Instead of nimble dextrous fingers he had large blunted talons.
He knew he should use his thumb to pin the stick against his other fingers, but his thumbs were so small that he couldn't get it to work right. He could hold the stick in a clumsy manner, but when he tried to draw in the dirt with it he wanted to give up and cry. He couldn't even make a circle.

It was a good thing the little colt was clearly in protected lands, thought Eleuia. If he was out in the wild, any big cat or lone wolf would have an easy time picking him off. Here she was, a brilliantly colored bird with flamboyantly long feathers sitting in a tree right above him and he hadn't so much as given her a second glance. She shook her head, smiling.
She hadn't intended to snoop and yet here she was, watching him trying to draw with the stick. She'd never seen a soquili do that before and didn't quite understand why he was trying. Eventually it became too much, she had to say something, and say something she did.
"Isn't that something that humans do?" she asked, curious. "Why are you trying it?"

A frightened whinny slid from Itzamatul's lips. He nearly jumped out of his skin when that sudden voice came from above. He stared upwards to see a bird, a very big bird. Possibly even an alarmingly big bird.
"I was... uh..." His words slipped away from him. He wasn't always the best at communicating even in a calm situation and now he was surprised by a stranger that looked almost big enough to carry him off. Of course.... that didn't mean she would.
Belatedly, he flushed with embarrassment for judging her so quickly. He threw away his stick, embarrassed to be caught playing around as well. "S-sorry," he muttered anxiously. "I was just trying something."
