She fluttered softly to the ground, barely making a sound. The sun was beginning to rise- the appointed time had arrived. She had met the stallion before, however briefly. He had suggested he might be able to teach her more about healing. Although Raghnall was adept at several forms of healing, she desired to learn from a pure unicorn the abilities of their horns. Besides, Raghnall was busy and she would not allow herself to be idle. She folded her wings against her body and waited for the stallion's arrival.

By the time he had arrived at the predesignated meeting spot, the mare he had made the arrangements with was already there, waiting on his arrival. While he was never a huge stickler on punctuality, he still tried his best to be timely. Already the sun was rising, the sky set ablaze in brilliant hues of fiery reds and oranges that faded off to soft pinks and peaches. He only hoped he hadn't kept her waiting for too long.

"My apologies, Ember, I tried to get here as soon as I could." Though he still knew very little about the mare, they had at least exchanged names in their earlier conversation. It seemed the mare was searching for a teacher, someone that was able to teach her how to make use of the unicorn blood that ran through her veins and heal others, and Fracas was more than happy to teach what he could. "Where would you like to begin? I will do my best to answer what questions you have, but there may be some even I am unable to give you information to."

With an even tempered stare, the half-uni gave a nod of his head, ready to start the lesson whenever Ember was ready. This moment reminded him of his own quest that had happened several years ago when he younger and still not accustomed to his healing powers. Fracas had never been drawn to fighting or violence, so he had searched for someone to teach and guide him on his journey to becoming a strong healer. He hoped he could do his teacher justice as he took Ember under his wing.

While the sky was afire with brilliant hues in a display of nature's glory, she noticed none of it. Her world was grey, dark and without color. She wasn't colorblind, but to her there was no joy to be had and so beautiful sunsets, flowers, and otherwise lovely scenes took on no significance to her. All was darkness. She nodded to the stallion curtly and jumped right in.

"You are right on time. Shall we begin then?" She didn't mean to be rude or short with anyone, but she had lost whatever part of herself that could connect with another being on any real level. There was a hole in her heart, and learning to heal was the first step in possibly healing it. She didn't hold much hope in the endeavor, but the burning ember around her neck wouldn't allow her to forget. It;s searing heat only waned when she was working towards this goal. She would continue, if only to find relief.

"Yes let's." Fracas gave a curt nod of his head at Ember's request, quietly thinking as to how he could approach their first lesson. Learning how to heal had been a timely process and it had been a long while since Fracas had last had to review the basics. With a deep sigh and furrowed brows, the brown and green stallion took a few pacing steps as delved into the cherished memories of his own learning process. After some deliberation, Fracas decided it was best to start with where he had started.

"Well, how much do you know of magic in general?" He asked, voice calm and even as paced in front of the fiery, young mare. "There is a magic that flows through many breeds, though ours is specific kind. It feels warm and light, like a golden light filling your being, washing gently over you and warms you through your entire being." He stopped his pacing and turned to look the mare in the eyes. "It's important that you search through yourself for this light. I learned to do so through meditation, but others find it through their compassion for others, some through their own happy memories. Right now, you need to discover what works for you to find this light that is hiding within you."

She watched him with rapt attention, eager to soak up what knowledge she may. Healing with magic was a foreign concept to her, to her shame. She hadn't had to opportunity to learn from a master, true, but she also had never even attempted to try her powers growing up. She'd never had the interest in it, and perhaps this was her penance. There was so much she had to pay for...

"I know little of magic," she said quietly. True, her father was a domained uni-angeni and theoretically had magic, and she herself was part flutter and unicorn... but she was never taught. She knew nothing. As she listened to his explanation she paused. This was going to be much harder than she thought. She'd never held a particular compassion for others beyond a normal level of wanting to cause no harm. She had no happy memories that weren't tainted with the darkness the fire had caused. Not wanting to reveal this, she pushed her feelings down and suggested instead, "Perhaps we could try meditation. What do I need to do?"

He wasn't one to pry into the past of others, that was their own personal battle. He cared little for delving into the business of others and when Ember simply asked to be taught meditation, the stallion thought little of it. Everyone had something unsavory they wished to keep from reaching the surface and airing out to dry and Fracas respected other's personal boundaries. With a curt nod of his braided mane, the half-uni began as best he could.

"To start with meditation, your breathing must be calm and even. You need to clear your mind of all things and simply allow yourself a blank canvas. No jumbled thoughts, nothing distracting you." He instructed clearly, thinking back to his earlier teacher. He had fond memories of the elder Soquili and he could only imagine how lost he would still be without the Soquili's guidance. "It takes a long while before everything is calm, but it gets easier with continued practice. For a very long time I had trouble quieting my own thoughts, so don't be frustrated if you find it challenging."

She listened intently, nodding along to the requirements Fracas listed off. She realized this would be a difficult task for her, and her heart sank. She knew learning to heal properly was not going to be a simply thing, but she didn't realize how much she would have to delve into herself. She closed her eyes, trying to focus on her breathing but all she saw was fire and her mothers face in agony. Her heartbeat quickened and her breathing was erratic but she clamped her eyes shut tightly and focused just on the in and out of the air in her lungs.

In. One, two, three, four. Out. One, two, three, four. In, letting in the scent of early spring - new growth and dirt. Out, letting go of the scent of ash and burning flesh.

She repeated this exercise over and over until she had lost track of time and her eyes fluttered open gently. She looked at the stallion sheepishly, worried he saw through her. She felt exposed, vulnerable. Still, she controlled her breath. That was step one, at least.

"I think I may have my breathing under control. Clearing my mind may be a whole other thing, though. Do you have any tips on doing so more easily?"

He was quiet as he watched the fiery mare do her best with his instructions. Fracas already knew that meditation was not the easiest of routes to go about teaching how to heal, but he had come to know many troubled souls and found Ember to be akin to them. Peace of mind was certainly necessary before any healing could be done. A calmed mind allowed the magics that unicorns were gifted to flow more easily and he was certain the troubled mare before him was in need of some internal healing of her own.

He paced about the field they had met in, watching as the morning light gently brushed over the foliage around them, only returning his attention to Ember when her voice reached his ears. With a stoic expression, Fracas Mephitic carefully looked his impromptu student over, noting how her breathing had certainly evened out, but she still held a worried light in her eyes. Yes, this would certainly take time.

"Hmm... For clearing your mind, sometimes it is best to count as you breathe, counting every time you take a breath out." The unicorn did his best to give an example, taking in a languid breath and exhaling before counting each one out loud. "You don't need to say what breath your on out loud, you can simply count them in your head, but it's a good combination for evening your breathing and trying to focus your mind elsewhere. If you lose count, don't fret, you can either start over should you still feel restless, or you can stop if you believe yourself calmed enough."

Part of him wondered if he was doing his teacher any justice with how he was approaching this. He often found it difficult to teach others, but she had requested he do so and he was never one to turn away someone who needed his help.

She furrowed her brow in frustration. She HAD been counting, though he'd have no way of knowing that. It had helped, certainly, but she carried the weight of too much guilt to find peace in her mind. Whenever she tried to let calm overtake her, felt the darkness crept in, threatening to devour her. She turned away from him and began pacing, continuing her breathing exercises but holding onto an image - that of her mother. She had to remember what she was doing all of this for, what her purpose was.

She smelled ash and burning things unbidden, saw only flames and ash as she searched her mind for her mother's face. At first all she saw was the charred corpse that was her very last memory of her beloved mother but she fought through it. Breathe in -one-two-three-four. Breathe out-one-two-three-four. The image changed, slowly at first and then suddenly there she was - Cinder in all of her glory. Ember had always found her mother beautiful, graceful and petite. Her flutter blood was stronger than her daughter, with only the touch of unicorn thrown in. She was similar to Ember in color, though less vibrant and fiery than her offspring. Her eyes were kind, her smile illuminating. For as long as the mare could remember it had been just her and Cinder together. She was everything to Ember.

She held the vision of her mother until instead of guilt she felt the warmth of her love wash over her, spreading from her chest outward until it filled her entire being. The eternal burn of the ember around her neck fell away. Silence fell around her. Everything in the world fell away until it was only Cinder and Ember frolicking in a memory of happiness. For the barest of moments she felt the barrier fall and tapped into the reservoir within herself she had never tapped before and knew it to be magic. It seemed to glow and radiate out, though her eyes were still closed tightly.

Gasping, her eyes flew open. "Fracas! I felt it!" It flew away from her just as quickly as she'd felt it, but she had touched it. She knew she could learn to tap into it again with practice. The first bit of success on a long journey left her feeling euphoric. Someday, she would make up for her sins. It was the first time she'd ever felt it possible, that she was perhaps worth saving after all. "I suddenly feel tired..." She was drained with the efforts she'd put forth so far. "Should we take a break or push forward? I feel so much closer to it now!" It was waiting within her, she felt it. It was a gentle hum inside of her that her ears were finally open to. Something inside of her had opened, and it would never close again.

He watched in silence as Ember paced and did her best on his vague instructions. He was unfamiliar with teaching others and he found he lack the talents that teachers had, preferring to find other methods to demonstrate his knowledge. He wasn't sure why he hadn't turned away Ember's request, perhaps it was because he had been like her in one fashion or another at one point in time, perhaps it was simply because he had a soft spot in his heart that wouldn't allow him to send someone off in need of help. But seeing Ember work gave Fracas' the smallest bit of satisfaction and relief that he hadn't made a mistake in accepting her plea for help.

The draft's great form began moving in slow circles around the fiery mare as he observed her. Fracas made sure to remain quiet as he walked and watched to see if there was any apparent change he could notice in her expression or body language, though her eyes remained closed as she found a method that worked best for her. And there was a change, a small as it was, and he knew in that moment that she had felt something of the magic that resided within her.

With a knowing nod, Fracas pondered her question. Attempting to find that healing gift within one's self was incredibly taxing on the mind. It took great focus to those who were unfamiliar with it to find it and even then it would take repeated, taxing efforts to get accustomed to it. Ember was strong in and of her own right, she had endured her own trials and her own strife, but he was unsure if it would be best to have her continue... Then again, it could help heal her own damage that she carried on her own.

The stallion stopped his pacing and eyed Ember thoughtfully, trying to come to an executive decision before he gave her an answer. Ultimately he decided it would be best to continue. "Continue. Try to find that same feeling once more before we take a break for the morning. It takes many repeated tries to grow accustomed to finding and using your healing gifts, especially for those who aren't pure unicorn," he gestured to the two of them. "Find that same feeling and try to find as many other memories or thoughts that give that same internal warmth as the one that provoked it. The more memories and things that you know can draw out your power, the easier it becomes to utilize it."

Fracas laid himself on the ground, making himself comfortable as he waited for the mare to continue in her training, his golden eyes as stoic as ever.

Her body was electric; energy was crawling all along her skin and she couldn't sit still. She felt the power bubbling within her, deep inside where she could tap into it at will. She knew she would never not feel the power again. It was awoken, part of her that would never go away. She felt warm inside. She closed her eyes again and felt herself slip deep down to where the energy lied. She delved deeper, feeling the extent of that power. She was overwhelmed by it, awed by its beauty. She opened her eyes, the power flowing through her. She held it as long as she could, until she as shaking and sweating. She released it suddenly, stumbling over from sudden exhaustion. She smiled weakly at Fracas. "I guess I'll have to get used to that." She was panting. "I really can't thank you enough for this. How extensive are our powers? What can I heal?"

User ImageThere was always a slight shift in the air when a unicorn, full blooded or partial, used their natural talents. Most didn't notice it, especially those who weren't gifted with healing powers and the like, but for those with unicorn blood in them that were capable of healing and had practiced the craft, noticed it. For Fracas, he found the sensation to be gentle, warming, like being bathed in the golden glow of sunbeams on a mild summer's day. His golden eyes watched Ember, giving her the peace and quiet she needed to concentrate. and he couldn't bite back the small, proud smile that found its way to his face. Perhaps he hadn't done his teacher any shame in his own efforts.

Teaching was hardly a skill Fracas had ever considered to be in his metaphorical toolbox. Teaching took greater understanding of a subject, it required mastery, and mastery wasn't something Fracas had ever boasted to have. Certainly, he considered himself advance in the art of healing, but he had years of practical experience to give him that claim. He hadn't studied or intended to make it his life's work to teach others, but when she had asked him for his help, it wasn't within his morals to turn her away. Fracas recognized a kindred spirit within her, and watching her take the lesson seriously and succeed from his instruction made his heart swell.

When Ember's footing faltered, Fracas was beside her, monitoring her in case she were to teeter over. He studied her with unbridled concern. Perhaps he had pushed her too far- no, he realized, she wouldn't have been nearly as enthralled to continue if she hadn't. Once that first spark was had, once Ember felt the connection she had to her healing abilities, Fracas was certain she would be dedicated to practicing the craft.

The stallion offered Ember a smile and a nod of his head in agreement. "It will drain a lot of energy at first. Eventually you'll be able to heal for extended periods of time without feeling drained and exhausted... at least, not like you do now." Gently, Fracas pressed against her to signal she should lay down. It was a physically exhaustive practice, tapping into one's inner energy in order to heal another, and he didn't want to risk Ember getting injured out of impatience. He laid down in front of her, keeping an amicable spacing between the two of them. He shifted to get comfortable, looking off to the sky to take note of the time. It was nearly afternoon, he noted, somewhat impressed with his student, and it ember had already figured out how to tap into her inner potential. "For now, heal small nicks or scratches, nothing with deep damage or too widespread. If you start too big, too soon, you'll end up fainting from expending so much energy."
