Azee stepped up on to his perch, the sun was blinking, scattering gentle spots of yellow and white over his body through the waving leaves of the tree's above. Sitting on his rump, the soquili looked rather odd, with legs splayed out in a manor that defied the normality of these creatures, his eyes steady and unmoving;it was a wonder his limbs didn't cramp but he found it perfectly comfortable, a habit he had very much become accustomed to since he was but a wee foal.

His perch consisted of raised, grey stone mounted next to a lake filled with lotus flowers and lilly pads, a shrine which belonged to Amberly, the guardian of wishes. He was trusted with protecting the gifts and sentimental possessions that soquili would leave when they came to say their prayers, or to ask favours of the wishing star and to mourn the passing of their loved ones. He was to make sure that these sacred items were left untouched and to clear away the flowers that had long since withered. Azee's role was less serious than that of the guardian, he would be Amber's gargoyle while he was away resting, knowing that if he hadn't volunteered himself for this role then Amberly would be burning the candle at both ends, only sleeping when he couldn't keep his eyes open any longer and not being able to rest knowing the shrine was unprotected for the few hours he would sleep.

The skeletal horse also just loved pretending to be a statue. He got a thrill every time someone would genuinely mistake him for an ornament and inspect him with speculative, curious eyes and when he would eventually move his own eyes to look at them, they would shriek and pant uncontrollably and he would bellow with hysterical laughter.

Today was quieter, there weren't very many visitors, only soquili that had strayed from the path that had been engraved in to the woods over time had wandered in to the vicinity. They would take a quick nosy around and he would keep a keen eye on them as they waded through the cluster of offerings that littered the ground, making sure that they didn't disturb or damage them. When they were satisfied with their small detour, they would turn back to try and find their way back to the trail.

Azee let out a yawn while no one was around, breaking from his stationary position he gave a quick shake of his shoulders, prepared to keep his guise for a little while longer.

The light played against the ground, flittering between the trees like the small birds that inhabited the forests. Soft hoof-falls sounded as the large soquili moved through the trees, following no path that could be seen, yet still walking with purpose. Evo had never been one to say with a path if it could be helped. Far to many things were missed if you simply followed where those before had tread.

A gentle smell wound it's way through the leaves, crisp and fresh. Evo knew the smell well, for there had been a large lake full of delicate flowers back home. The black eyes lit up with excitement. It had been a long time since the kalona mix had smelled lotus. Picking up the pace, those same soft hoof-falls increased in speed, carrying them closer towards the smell. The gentle sound of water soon reached perked ears, and a wide smile stretched across that often misunderstood face. One of Evo's favorite places, back before it became necessary to venture outside of the protective woods that once had been home, had been the lake. It had been easy to sit for hours, days, beside the cool water, watching toads and squirrels go this way and that. It also served as a wonderful way to meet others, both fellow herd members and those travelers who had simply found their way into the unknown. It was easy to get lost in thoughts of home, picturing the blowing willows and mossy statues.

As the trees broke, however, Evo was pulled from those thoughts that clouded the mind. The lake was... well... not as large as the one from memory. But it was beautiful none the less, and, surprisingly, not empty. There were things, everywhere, and some sort of monument. Undeterred, Evo made way through the various things, heading for the statue.

"How beautiful..." Evo said, commenting on the various knick-knacks. The wild grin was now but a gentle smile.

Azee would lose himself in thought over the quiet period, when no one entered the sanctuary his mind would float away and flick through the chapters of his foalhood like a story book; he was fond of one in particular, the day he stumbled across the lake and in to Amberly, literally. The foal was stood by the lake's edge, looking daringly in to the rippling reflection of himself within the water. He wanted to test how many different shapes he could make while diving in to it before hitting the water, this would of course take several attempts to complete but he was a foal and he had all day to focus on this little experiment. In order to get enough air to make these shapes, he would have to get a running start.

Backing up in to the forest and about five tree's back, various distances from one another, he then kicked off of his back hooves and beelined towards the lake. Only when he parted the forest, a purple and orange kirin stepped directly in to his path and Azarel went head first in to his side, throwing the kirin off of his hooves and in to the water. The force of the impact alone pushed Azee on to his rump leaving him dazed, confused and soaked in the splash of the stallions fall.

He remembered panicking that day thinking that the stallion would scold him and demand to be taken to see his parents to express that their child needed to be disciplined, only he didn't. The stallion climbed from the water, dripping from ear to hoof, more concerned over whether Azarel was hurt than he was about being thrown unexpectedly in to his own lake!

He couldn't help but chuckle to himself at the memory. Hearing the chuckle, All-seeing eye flapped his wings in the tree behind, squawking as he lifted from the branch he was perched on and glided down to land on his companions head. It was only then that Azee's attention was pulled from his thoughts, seeing the new face of a soquili that was poking around the shrine. He stiffened, wondering whether the soquili had witnessed or heard him chuckle and whether or not his cover had been blown. Still, he was determined to keep up the act. That was until the soquili drew nearer and commented on the aesthetic of the lake and it's surroundings. After that, Azee just couldn't contain himself.

"Oh shucks, stop it you, you're making me blush!" His lips spread in to thin, shy smile. He lifted his left, front knee and lowered his head until his leg covered a segment of his face, leaving his eyes in sight to bat his eyelashes teasingly at the stranger stood before him.

The voice was a surprise. Evo started, eyes going straight for the figure. "Goodness my..." A talking statue... how wondrous... how familiar! A wide smile broke out. "A statue that speaks! Bless gods, this land is touched!" Quickly picking up speed, Evo hurried to pick a path between the things spread about, making way to the other. "Dear statue, have the gods blessed you with life? Or simply speech?"

Wide, childlike eyes blinked, though the facial markings made it hard to see that. "You are much different then the statues of my home, those who simply cry with the rains. I have never had one speak to me before..." It was true. While Evo had encountered many of the "blessings" of home, this was a new thing. Evo had never even heard of a talking statue... While home was filled with tales of flying fish, gigantic flowers, and mysterious storms that appeared and disappeared within a single blink, the statues never did speak at home.

It was... comforting, however. In a strange land, alone, separated from all that was once familiar and safe. While it was true, adventure was fun, and wonderful, and at times all Evo lived for, sometimes the familiar was even more so.

It appeared as though the other stallion wasn't phased by his playful teasing and instead he had sparked something terrible within the male, and that was hope. Now Azee was left with an ultimatum;should he continue to pretend to be the statue that had come to life or should he tell him the cold, hard truth? Looking in to those large, innocent and childlike eyes of the stallion, he realised just how breaking it would be to deny him of this moment, this once in a lifetime experience and Azee just couldn't find the heart or the words to tell him the sad truth of the matter. He would continue to play the role and be what it may, his insides crippling with guilt, his mind was filled with flattery that someone could truly mistake him for something gifted by a god.

Lowering his leg back down from his face to sit on the stone mount once more, his expression, despite being hidden by the bone mask, had grown serious and his dark sockets lingered on the stallions gaze in silence. Birds started chirping their song all around them and his familiar, All-Seeing Eye that was still sat upon his head, parted an echoed crow from his beak which faded out once more in to the deathly silence that suddenly loomed over them.

Azarel couldn't have planned it more perfectly himself and was cheering his heart out underneath the momentous surface. After some careful consideration, Azarel decided it was time for him to speak.

"It appears they have called on me to rise once more." He let out a grunt of a chuckle, which came with a twitch of a smile that tugged at the corners of his lips. He moved the back leg closest to the male awkwardly, as if they were breaking from their slumber and then followed the action with the rest of his limbs until he was finally able to climb to his feet;his shadow now towered over the male he was looking down on from a greater height than his own.

He placed one careful hoof at a time on to the earth beneath until he was aligned with the male that was stood at his front.

"I am Azarel." His name had never been as fitting to one situation, since it's meaning was 'God has helped' in hebrew and he found himself silently thanking his parents for granting him such a name, which was something he had never even considered doing before now. Perhaps it was one of those things many took for granted. "To whom do I owe the honour of serving this day?" He asked, prompting the other to reveal his own name.

Evo's eyes widened and the energetic soquili practically bounced in place with excitement. "Oh goodness me... Oh wonderful day." As the creature of the gods came down, Evo's body quickly dipped into a low bow. Never would Evo even dream of disrespecting a messenger or gift of the gods. When such a blessing was bestowed upon one, one had to honor it.

Even if such a blessing was terrifying, or startling.

Evo rose again but made well sure that this Azarel's head was far above one's own. "I am called Evo, dear Azarel. It is such an honor, a blessing, for you to waken for someone as little as I." Evo attempted to keep the tone neutral, but was hard to contain the excitement. Unfortunatly Evo was much like an innocent babe in this land. There was no guide, and many things were learned simply by errors made in the presence of others. The tiny tuff of a tail upon Evo's rump twitched, and the large wings quivered from the physical stress of containing such excitement. The kalona mix wanted nothing more then to run and jump about, bucking and calling and dancing, as was the norm back home.

"Do you to hail from the home Forest?" Evo asked softly, hopeing to keep this blessing for as long as possible. Back home one could only expect a blessing to last mere moments, if that. One blink and that lovely daisy you saw a moment ago that was larger then your head would be gone. So it was expected that any moment now this wonderful creature would return to the stone statue from moments before, and that made Evo so sad. "Or were you always from this land? For I have never seen you before, though it is true I was not often found during the fall festivities where those with bones were to walk again. So I may have simply missed your presence. The Forest is so large, after all."
