Veluri wasn't sure this was the best idea, venturing out after dark. The rest of his family was fast asleep, but Vel couldn't sleep. Something was keeping him awake and rather than stay with the others, which his fidgeting and loud sighs would wake everyone up, he decided that going on a little walk was the best solution to the problem. It would probably make him tired so he could just come home and go to sleep. No one would be the wiser, come dawn. So he was just going to take a little walk.

Trying to keep to the moonlit areas only, he pranced around a wide open glen filled with sweet-smelling and night blooming flowers. Their pale, white-pink petals were turned toward the ful moon above as Veluri wander around among them. The moonlight washed out his bright gold hide, making him look faded in the moonlight, but it seemed to make his horn and his hooves darker, a more solid black. His horn actually looked like it might be dangerous, in this light. Not that it was. It was a tool for healing, not for harming.

Vel hoped that his mother would start teaching them soon, she he'd be able to heal. That was something he was very interested in learning, moreso than anything else they had taught him so far.

He moved slowly, careful where his hooves went so he didn't break the stems of the flowers. They were quite pretty, even if he stood out among them like the sun among the stars. Maybe, if he was careful enough not to kill them, some night he could bring his family where to show them. At the very least, his sisters would enjoy the view and appreciate the thoughtfulness. His parents might be a little miffed that he had wander out without their knowing, but he hadn't gone far. One loud yell and they would be able to hear him, so he felt safe.

Or, well, as safe as he ever did when he was alone in the dark where he might have to scream for help. Snorting at his own paranoia, he shook his head. It wasn't like something bad was going to happen every time he wandered off on his own. Or that there would be scary things wherever he happened to be. He was alone with the very pale pink flowers, and he should be able to relax enough to get tired.

For some reason, though, he was still wide awake like there was something singing in his veins. Blue eyes keep darting toward the treeline where there were shadows, to the flowers, to the patches of random shadows that moved as clouds moved across the moon, waiting for someone to spring out and scare him. Wouldn't be the first time, after all.

Veluri was wavering. Maybe he should head home and just try to be as quiet as he could be, since it didn't seem like his little walk was doing anything to make him tired, like he'd hoped. Maybe ge should just call it a night and... no. That just wouldn't do. He didn't want to wake everyone up, and he didn't want to stay there, silent and still. That just wasn't his thing. He just needed to move, pretty much all the time. Even if it was just a slow walk through moonlit flowers. Sighing, he wondered if he would ever really sleep well again.

Masaru decided fairly on in his life that the dark was no enemy of his. While most foals might be hesitant to wander out into the night, afraid of what lurked there, 'Saru was the opposite. He found he enjoyed the peace he found in meandering through the dark. It was helpful even, considering with his light pelt he was far too easy to spot in daylight. At least at night he had a chance, wrapped in shadows, to sneak up on others or to vanish into the dark as he chose.

Playing hide and seek with the moon was a diverting enough game, and helped him to hone his skills of being quick and careful. There were times he darted through the moonlight patches and times he carefully avoided them, pretending the moon was his opponent and he had to steer clear. Tonight was a night for tag with the moon, where he clung to the shadows for as long as he could, wrapping himself in the dark and chasing the flicker of moonlight through the canopy.

Up ahead was a wide meadow, the kind that would be filled with light and the sweet scent of flowers. Flowers the colt knew well, for they closely matched the color of his own coat. He sincerely hoped his brother had never seen them, he was sure the teasing would never end. With a low sound of amusement Masaru began to skirt around the edge of the meadow, then paused, stock-still in the dark as he took note of a silver-washed golden colt frolicking amongst the flowers.

That was not a stranger he knew at all, and the markings and colors on the other colt's pelt were not familiar to him. He'd not seen them or their family before, did not know what herd they belonged to or what clan they called kin. Perhaps this colt was a child of this land as well, perhaps he was a stranger, only speaking to him would reveal it.

Still, the way the golden one kept staring at the trees -worried about the shadows and the monsters lurking within them- gave him an idea. Doing his best to find a deep pocket of shadow, Masaru lifted his hoof and brought it down sharply on a stick, reveling in the loud snap. The next moment he used the darkness as a road, skittering around the glade to a more distant point to watch. As he went he made sure to ruffle some of the brush, just enough to give the impression that there was more than one thing out in the woods.

Safely esconced in his new post, Masaru thought about imitating the sound a skinwalker or a predator might make, but the rustling of the trees and the snapping of twigs was more fun at the moment.

'If there's a monster in the dark, what would you do?'

This wasn't the first time that Veluri had had a night when he couldn't sleep. In fact, it seemed to him that the nights he was awake greatly outnumbered the ones where he slept. He was hiding it fro his family, because he didn't want them to worry. And because he had no idea what he couldn't sleep.

It was possible that his recent encounter with a foal with a skull for a face had left him with a lingering fear of what stalked the land once the sun went down. But, then, wouldn't he want to stay safe and sound with his family as soon as the sun had set? And, if it was only his fear of the things in the dark that was keeping him awake, why wasn't he sleeping during the day. Vel managed to get a nights sleep, near as he could figure, one night out of every four. And he was completely awake all other time. Not drowsy or dragging the way he'd seen some who were tired. Vel thought it was weird. And therefore didn't want to talk about it.

Instead, he walked among the moonlit flowers, letting the problem turn over in his mind, hopefully providing the elusive answers he sought. Or just made him tired. It would be nice not the have to sneak around in silence.

His foot slipped, crushing one of the flowers when some twig snapped in the shadows that surrounded the glade. Vel couldn't bring himself to care, though, as his heart started to race. Something was there. He spun around when he her rustling to his side, eyes trying to pierce the darkness and see what was circling him. Maybe it was more than one something, by the amount of noise it... they were making.

Vel turned with the sound, tying to keep whatever it was in front of him, because that was safer. If he could see it, hopefully he could fight it. Or run the other way as fast as he could. Either way, he needed to be able to se his stalkers.

With a few swift steps, he was on the other side of the clearing to where he'd heard the noises last, putting his back to the darkness there so that he could face the shadows on the other side, where something lurked. Something that was probably going to try and eat him.

"H-hello?" His voice quivered slightly. Of course, he should really learn not to talk to creepy shadow lurkers because that way lay maddness, but if he could get the creatures to reveal themselves, it would at least allow him to see what he was dealing with. And what direction he should run in.

All roads would lead home because, while he couldn't sleep most of the time, he had a terrific sense of direction. Lost was something he never going to be. In possible mortal danger.... well, that seemed to becoming a thing with him.

Trying to calm his breathing so he didn't seem like he'd been running, he raised his head and tried to pretend he wasn't afraid. "I know you are out there!" He challenged. "Show yourself and stop lurking about like some kind of freak!"

Yeah, way to go Val, piss off whatever it was that was in the woods. Bad idea to take a walk that night. Such a bad idea.

“Sorry, Moon.” Masaru muttered under his breath as he crept along. “But something more interesting is happening now… So you’ll have to excuse me.”

He grinned widely, golden eyes fixing on the strange sun-and-cloud colt he could see among the flowers. The horn sprouting from his forehead was unique, black and slightly curved and not like one Masaru had seen before. Maybe he was a healer? If so, it would make sense that he’d come searching beneath the moon for herbs or flowers. There were some plants, Masaru knew, that could only be found during certain phases of the moon, or in certain places in the woods. But if the colt was looking for them, he wasn’t doing the best job, he’d crushed quite a few under his hooves. Granted, that was due to his flailing in fear, but Masaru couldn’t quite help the urge to cause that.

The fact remained, if gathering was the colt’s purpose he was poor at it. And if scaring strangers was Masaru’s, he was quite good. Sooner or later he’d resolve the issue, maybe even apologize, but for now he enjoyed the opportunity to have the upper hand.

The game, though unexpected, was proving already to be a most pleasantly diverting one. With no other plans for the night, perhaps spooking a perfect stranger would do well enough to pass the time. If nothing else, maybe he could get the colt to run, he’d be more fun to play tag with than the moon. Still, he had the look of someone scared and out of his depth and perhaps not as well rested as he could have been.

‘Do you have no sense at all?’ Masaru wondered, frowning as he watched the cold react to the path of his movement.

Remaining still for a moment, he ruffled the branches with a low exhale and then skulked a few paces to the right to ensure he was no longer in the last detected post. If the colt did come stomping into the underbrush, trying to face his fear, he still wouldn’t be face to nose with Saru. But he’d be close enough to spook, the rose painted colt was sure of it. Safely ensconced in his new place, he took up watch again.

And promptly grumbled, annoyed and amused in turns, when the colt barked at him about being a freak and demanded he cease hiding. Snapping a few more branches and pawing restlessly at the ground until the sound of tearing foliage could be herd, he then crept backwards on quiet strides and moved circuitously around the clearing.

“No manners, for being trapped in the woods and surrounded by nothing but strange, unpitying dark.” He judged in his lowest voice, flicking his tail idly. “Calling names. Did your parents raise you thus? Poor manners indeed.”
