It was just at the tail end of winter, the howling winds and bitter cold had all but disappeared. An easy winter, really too easy. The stallion wasn’t sure if it was quite done, then again Adonis wasn’t the type to trust anyone or anything. Not even a season was going to escape his scrutiny. The light that once was in his eyes had faded, as his heart too dwindled. He was teetering between apathy and torn to survive the madness that plagued his head.

Adonis drowned his sorrow in the mares and stallions he found, but no one filled the void. Instead he walked the lands in a haze, no plan on where he was going or doing really. All he knew was that he had to keep moving, he was afraid of what would happen if he stopped. Sometimes in his darkest moments he wished that he might just happen upon a skinwalker, at least then it would be over. He sometimes wondered if that moment came whether or not he would fight. The pain that he was holding within him was slowly eating through his soul, yet whenever he met a fresh face there was nothing but smiles and charm from him. He may not have been the best judge of character, and he had let someone get too close. That mistake he was not willing to let happen again, however underneath his thick and curly mane he desperately needed to for his own survival.

Hooves met with the rocks of the river that gave him a thought to pause, but he kept moving. A soft exhale as he thought of the previous escapade. He never stayed around for the morning after, he didn’t have that kind of emotional stability. Walking along the river’s edge he pushed himself away from his own thoughts attempting to keep his mind quiet, though quiet was asking for too much. Although interaction was something he never actively sought after it was becoming one of those days that it might be necessary. His eyes examined the land for any movement, it was starting to seem like it wasn’t going to turn his way. At least the day was nice, the sun was shining brightly with only a few clouds slowly moving due to the little wind. On a better day he would’ve appreciated it, a bit more. He had to keep telling himself that he couldn’t let his emotions get the better of him today. He had to tell himself not to think of her. It was grotesque even to him what he had let himself become. One day he would return to his former glory, at least thats what he told himself.

Death Resurrected

Unlike the wounded and apathetic Adonis, Lailah was high spirits this winter morning. The deep-pink and purple mare was rarely heartsore, even when things weren't going her way -- and at present, they weren't! The last stallion she had seduced had been about a week prior -- he had tried to convince her to stay, to linger longer than she already had -- but she had simply laughed and told him they would meet again, if it were written in the stars. Had the mare known that he was the last soquili to bump into, she would have stayed . . at least for another night or two. Ah well -- her luck would turn around. . . she just needed to keep moving.

So it was, the mare was certain that the next miles would bring company; then then the next hill; or perhaps the next curve in the path. Every now and then she noticed a winged soquili high up in the wintertime sky -- but alas, they were either too high to notice her beauty, or on some other mission and could not be bothered to land. Lailah made up stories of those winged soquili -- one was flying home to his lover, in hopes to make up for all the lost time after being sent south for the winter. Another mare was chasing the stars, certain that she was destined to be among them. Her stories kept her entertained, if nothing else, and helped the lonely hour pass.

So it was, by the time her dark grey eyes picked out Adonis near the river, she almost thought him nothing but a trick of her imagination. But his own slow movements, and his scent upon the wind, suddenly drew her from her reverie. Another soquili! . . . and a stallion at that. It wouldn't have mattered to Lailah whether the unicorn was a mare or not -- sex didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Only love. Love, tenderness, attraction, and time. Moments. Lailah lived for moments-- even if she never saw another soquili again, even if she never crossed the same path twice, she had memories to hold near and dear to her heart. So it was, Lailah changed her path so she might better draw nearer to this stranger, and if nothing else, get to oggle him properly.

His coat was a lovely onyx, and yet he was splashed with a bright white, pink, and blue. His mane was curled and thick; and his tail was long and luscious. Now here was a soquili whose beauty was well apparent -- there was no need to compliment personality over physical form, or for Lailah to needing to focus on only a few traits -- eyes, smile, hooves, brains, or something of that nature. While Lailah could find beauty in anyone, no matter their appearance, this stallion needed no assistance. No, he was exceptionally gorgeous, and she was already hoping that maybe, just maybe, he might desire a spot of company, or not mind a bit of a dalliance.

"Salutations, beautiful stranger," she called out with a bright laugh and good-natured smile. Her words were absolutely genuine, and she herself paused within the sunshine; she would let no cloud shadow her in this first moment. Her long black and white tail gave a sensuous little swish behind her; it was simply out of habit -- sensuality was something she had long since mastered, and was second nature to her. "I hadn't meant to find myself by the river, but I'm rather glad I did."

Adonis caught himself staring at his shadow in the reflection of the water, before he was pulled out of it by a stranger. He was never one to deny his vanity. He lived for himself. Her words cause a half smile, “You sure know how to sweet talk a guy,” his head tilting to see his visitor. Flipping his bangs from his face he took a moment just to look at her. In a world full of cynicism there was something about her that was just....refreshing. Was she flirting? It wasn’t often he felt out of touch, but lately it was a reality he was facing more and more. Those he had become friends with were settling down with families, and no matter how much he stared at his reflection in the waters he didn’t see it in his own future. The stallion's head tilted slightly as his pink pupils focused in on hers, he didn’t want to be too obvious when he was checking her out. He might’ve appreciated the soquili form, however he wasn’t a dog about it. He had manners, for the most part.

“Likewise,” he responded, his tone cool and calm. “You’re the first I have seen for days,” he admitted. Honestly, he wasn’t broken up about seeing anyone because he didn’t like being seen in such a poor situation. If there was something he was good at, it was putting a smile on his face and pretending like everything was fine. Afterall that’s what got him in trouble in the first place. The walls he had let down for a moment, he spent rebuilding them right back up. It was frustrating to him, how much time had really gone by and yet he felt as if he were in the same damn place.

He had taken notice of her tail, his eyes trailing back up her body to meet her gaze again. Oh. This was new for him. It was at this moment he felt his entire body. What was he doing with his tail? Was he blinking? s**t. Was he standing weird? He took a deep breath, ears flickering back from being mad at himself for losing his cool for all but two minutes. "I'll admit, its nice too see someone in this," he paused, "Void." For lack of better terms it was nearly what it was. At least from his perspective. "I'm Adonis," he regained himself. "Pleasure," he bowed his head, not too formal but just enough charm that it satisfied him. It wasn't often that he found himself at a loss for words. These days it was because he didn't want to talk, but now that he did. He found himself stumbling, and he'd rather not come up looking like a bumbling idiot to the first lady he had seen in awhile. On top of that a lady who complimented him. Compliments were a weakness of his, along with pride, and well of course vanity.

Lailah's smile was genuine, but there was something else behind her gaze. Perhaps it was a bit of lust, a bit of admiration, and a bit of flirtation all rolled into one. She was no stranger to stallions, or mares for that matter, and right now she could appreciate this ebony stallion. Honestly, she wasn't shy about letting her violet eyes slowly drink in his form; every look was pointed, as if she was savoring him from afar. Stranger though he might be, there was no harm in admiring a stallion as stunning as Adonis.

His ebony fur looked warm and inviting; the mop of bright colored curls that fell down his back in blue, pink, and black waves; the curve of his tail, and his strong form were all exquisitely delightful. Honestly, she had no problem drinking him in, and could only hope he enjoyed her in the same fashion. Perhaps this stranger was a kindred spirit?

Lailah didn't miss the way the stallion looked -- or was it stared?-- at her. So it was, she allowed her tail another little swish, and shifted her weight on her hooves. This allowed her to change her stance, so she might the stallion a better view; instead of looking upon him face on she was now more at an angle. This time, she delicately gave a small shake of her head, to push her long bang out of her face, and let it flip easily over her back. Unlike some soquili, she had no wings, or additional appendages to show off for Adonis. But Lailah didn't mind; she might be a regular mare, but she was a master of her form, and knew how to use it to her best advantage.

Perhaps Adonis might appreciate such a thing?

Black eyes twinkled as the stallion introduced himself with reserved charm. This was going to be fun. "Adonis," she let the name roll of her tongue. "A lovely name for a beautiful stallion. I'm Lailah, and it's a pleasure to meet you, sir," she spoke, half-purring her words. A pleasure indeed. "It is a bit of a barren land, I agree. Perhaps, then, you wouldn't mind a spot of company? Perhaps we might ease one another's loneliness for a spell, or at least break up the monotony of the day." She didn't necessarily have to linger if the stallion didn't wish it, but Lailah hoped she was reading him right. She wanted some company, and Adonis would make a fine time if she played her cards right.
