The unicorn was uneasy. She tried to shake it off, the feeling of impending doom. She knew it was just a result of the pressures of building the herd and the fear of a repeat of the past. Things would be different this time, she vowed. She would do things differently. She wouldn't allow for isolation this time. There would be guards, vigilance and discipline. She would protect her new family at all costs.

Still she felt anxious and afraid. While she could keep her face a mask of perfect calm most of the time, sometimes she needed a break. That was why she currently found herself away from the herd, allowing for a silent breakdown away from prying eyes. She closed her eyes and leaned against the thick trunk of a tree, reassured in its solidity.

The scent was familiar. The kalona breathed it in deeply, savoring the sweet and tangy hate that bloomed across her tongue as she thought about the last time she had that particular mare's blood in her mouth. She curled her lip in a snarl, ears flattening against her wild hair. This time I have you... She refused to acknowledge the defeat she suffered at the hands of this unicorn during the great war, though it still galled her to the core. She could come up with excuses as to why she lost that battle, but she much preferred to track down and murder the only witness to such embarrassment.

And by some miraculous twist of fate, here she was in scenting distance! The kalona could hardly contain her excitement. She melded into the shadows silently, skirting around the shrubbery and smaller herbaceous plants around the bases of the trees. She crept slowly, considering patience to be prudent in this most vital of kills. She didn't want to screw this one up. When might she ever find this mare again if she gets away?

It wasn't long before the unicorn was within sight, standing out against the dark colors of the Autumn forest. Wretch paused a moment just to stare at her, considering the pure dumb luck she was facing. She was downwind of the unicorn, and there her prey stood with her eyes closed and in some sort of daze. Was it really this easy?

She grinned and made her move, sudden and deadly, not wanting to waste time in playing with this particular prey. She used her wings to help propel her forward, aiming a slash with her teeth at the unicorn's throat.

Maybe it was her heightened sense of anxiety, or maybe she heard or smelled something that alerted her, but moments before the dark form crashed into her Abigail's eyes flew open and she jerked to the side. The kalona fell away to the side, knocking Abigail's shoulder ineffectively. Abigail whipped around to face her opponent while jumping back to get some distance. Her mind finally caught up with what was happening and she recognized the creature attacking her. "Wretch..." she hissed. She held some hatred in her heart for skinwalkers, certainly, but kalona also shared a special place in the blackest parts of her heart as well. "I had hoped you'd died in that battle."

Her tail thrashed with agitation behind her as she considered what to do. She wasn't so far from the herd, she could run for help. She was too far away to yell for help, but maybe she could lure the kalona back towards the Kateri. "At least when I was done with you it didn't seem likely you'd survive." She hoped the jabs at the kalona's pride would insight her to carelessness.

She growled as she bounced harmlessly off the unicorn's shoulder and into the tree she had been leaning on. She snapped her teeth at the other mare as she jumped away, more to expel her irritation than in hopes of harming the unicorn. She stood up straighter, facing her nemesis with dignity. She wouldn't be so easily baited with insults. "Abigail was your name, wasn't it? As I recall you were not alone in our last meeting. I've long wondered how things might have gone had you been alone." A predatory grin split her face. "It seems that the Spirits saw fit to answer that for me." Her spade tail twitched in agitation and she arched her back in a distinctly feline fashion.

"I think perhaps you are better at running away than you are at fighting." Suddenly she leaped forward, but feinted and turned to bring her powerful tail to bear on the unicorn.

Abigail saw the feint for what it was and moved to dodge but wasn't fast enough to save herself from a nasty bruise across one shoulder. She grunted in frustration, noting to herself that she needed lessons from Apocalypse. Provided she survived, of course. She continued edging subtly in the direction of the Kateri herd, praying for a patrol to come by this way. She couldn't rely on that chance though and elected it was time to go on the offensive if she was going to make it out of this.

She fortified her resolve and dodged to the side once more, but brought her own tail around in a spin, but instead focused her energy on her kicking back hooves, hoping for a hit.

Wretch grinned at the unicorn's pathetic attempt at an attack. She jumped back, suffering only a minor brush, nothing she even bothered acknowledging. "You're pathetic," she crooned, circling around like a bird of prey that had found a meal. "You've gotten weak, complacent. What have you been up to, I wonder..." She didn't wonder, but she used the diversion to her advantage. She suddenly lunged forward, angling her head down to scrape at Abigail with her horns.

Her eyes popped open in shock and pain as she went flying to the ground, and only barely slipping away from the goring she had just received. She had genuinely been surprised in the move somehow. She'd tried to move out of the way, but her flank above her left leg was now sporting a deep gash that she would have to see to presently. I seeped out blood steadily, the red a stark contrast to her fur as it ran down her leg. She was limping now, but she couldn't give in to the pain or let it slow her down. "You monster! Filth like you have no place in these lands!" She had risen her voice as loud as she could, ostensibly out of anger but she was nearly desperate for her herd to hear her. Please someone hear me... She cursed herself for her weakness. She mustered her strength and ran full-tilt at Wretch, leaping at the last minute to bring her head in line to put her own horn to use.

The kalona was actually mildly impressed by the strength of the hit. She met the unicorn, rearing up and ramming her shoulder-to-shoulder, avoiding the deadly horn but getting pushed back a couple of steps. She deflected the weight of her opponent, shifting her off and bumping her off as she pulled back. "Not bad," she muttered with begrudging respect. She responded in kind with a fierce kick with her powerful hind legs.

It was all over. Her heart sank, her eyes widened with fear. She had no idea what would happen if she passed out now, but she had no control over it. She never saw the hit coming, recovering from the awkward disembarking from the previous attack. She took the kick right in the side of the head, going flying to the ground. She saw spots and her vision began to darken. She struggled to rise, collapsing back to the dirt as her muscles trembled with the shock of the blow running through her. She couldn't focus, and then she slowly slipped away into the darkness. Her last thought was the pure, blind hope that her herd's patrol was on the way...

He had heard her frantic yelling and come running, his powerful body eating the distance swiftly. He rounded a twist in the path and took in the scene, making a snap decision in the heat of the moment. He didn't break his stride and simple barreled through the kalona as though she weren't even there. He wasn't worried about the attack being particularly effective, he just needed the predator away from Abi long enough for him to assess her injuries. Things didn't look good with her on the ground and bleeding.... his heart sank at the sight.

Wretch watched her nemesis fall with glee, preparing to pounce on her to finish her. However before she could get moving she caught the horrific sight of what she initially thought was the ghost of Abigail out of the corner of her eye, but huge and terrible. Out of instinctive fear she lunged to the side and back, but was bumped even further by a glancing blow from the large white creature. She was able to see that it was in fact a stallion, and not the disembodied spirit of her enemy. "Who the ******** are you?" she growled, digging her hooves into the dirt angrily. He was huge and imposing, and even the glancing blow she had taken hurt considerably. She backed off, trying to assess the situation. He was between her and Abigail, she would have to face him to get to her. Was it worth it? She glanced at her prey, could smell and see the blood pooling around the unresponsive body. Perhaps they could heal her.. but she would be out of commission for a while. Perhaps Wretch could isolate her again soon. She wavered uncertainly, then decided to try the stallion before leaving, flaring her wings open and kicking dust up as she charged, aiming her shoulder for his wide chest.

Her chest rises and fall uncertainly, blood continuing to ooze from the deep gash in her leg. Her eyes fluttered slightly as though she fought the unconsciousness, but did not awake.

His attention had been on Abigail, trying to triage her wounds and deciding what needed to be fixed first. He ignored the smaller kalona entirely, his concern for his herd alpha paramount in his mind. As such he was caught mostly unaware and took the bruising force of the blow to his chest. He thought perhaps one his ribs was now bruised, if not cracked. He grunted in pain, tossing the kalona back the way she'd come and away from Abigail once more. "That was a cheap shot." He grinned at her, showing no outward signs of the pain he was feeling. "My turn." He reared up and then came crashing down at her, yelling thunderously.

The blow wasn't life threatening but it shook her to her core. She heard bone crack in her shoulder and stepped back shakily, testing her wings against her shoulder. She was in a great deal of pain and eyed the stallion warily. This guy will muder me... she thought irritably. She couldn't help but admire his strength and stature as he towered over her, protecting Abigail. She could tell this one was lost, and backed away slowly. "Keep your pathetic friend." She spat on the ground and launched into the air and rose slowly, confident the stallion was more interested in healing his fallen comrade than in pursuing her. She glowered down at him as she rose painfully and glided away.

Her eyes began to flutter open and she moaned, but remained prostrate on the ground. She wasn't quite conscious, but seemed to be trying.

Vira stared hard at the kalona as she departed, wishing he could spare the time to finish this fight. Unfortunately Abigail was in desperate need of healing, and he couldn't waste time. He would keep an eye out for the kalona, though. This would not be forgotten. Once the kalona was gone he let out a breath and turned to Abigail. He knelt down by her head and focused his healing energy, feeling it flow into her. "Come on Abi, we need you..." he whispered softly, continuing to speak to her softly as he continued healing her. Her wounds were serious and she would need to rest for a while, but he was confident she would make it fine. As soon as she was able to move he would support her and take her back to the safety of the herd, where she would be taken care of.
