He could barely believe it. He, Tsi-Tsi Kanati of the Bird Clan had managed to make it to the fourth round of the Sky Ceremony. His opponent was from the Mantis Clan this time. In fact, this was the first round this year in which the yellow lion's opponent was younger than he was. Which was...somewhat unsettling. Especially since the older he got, the more likely such an occurance would be.

Oh well. There was only so much he could read into a fight. Duel? Combat? Whatever.

This wasn't an auspicious day, that's for sure. The sky had been filled with pale gray-blue and sickly yellow clouds all day. Sharif wasn't normally superstitious, but even he felt a little shaken by the sight. He only hoped Gvtsiha, his brother, would have more confidence than he currently did.

There seemed to be a larger crowd than usual; probably because most of the challengers who had been knocked out ended up watching. Not one to be stricken by stage fright, Sharif stepped into the proverbial ring, and bowed to Tsi-Tsi.
"Shall we begin?" he asked politely, though in his gut, he knew it seemed trivial.

"Might as well," Tsi-Tsi answered a bit nervously. He'd already done better than last year - and Yinehi - and the farther he got in the tournament the more nervous he became. There were increasingly few people left and the farther he got the more Tsi-Tsi realized.

He had a chance of winning this.

How insane was that?

The yellow lion shook his head to clear the strange thought and refocus on the match before him. Deal with this first. The older lion lashed out at the younger with a paw towards the side of his head.

The fight kicked off, and Sharif quickly rose his hind legs, preparing to deliver the first offense. Everything became a blur, though-- he wasn't expecting his counterpart to be quicker. Losing his balance as he was slapped across the head, he stumbled backwards, shuffling his feet to keep himself from falling over.

As he counterbalanced and leaned forward, the young adult used this to give himself some momentum, and sprint back at Tsi-Tsi. Then, he ducked his head low, and aimed for the male's exposed stomach. Hopefully his mane (which he was quite proud of) would absorb any shock or defensive strikes.

"Whoof!" was the older lion's only verbal response as Sharif drove all the air out of him. As he was pushed away, he flailed around a bit, possibly hoping to hit his opponent, more hoping to keep the other lion away as he recovered his breath.

Later, he'd say that the first hit had been deliberately aimed. But not even Tsi-Tsi was capable of decieving himself into thinking that any of these blows had any kind of thought to them. The only reason he had any idea where the other male was was because of how he himself had been struck.

That whole "mane absorbing the hits" trick was a lie, it turned out. Sharif's head managed to knock itself hard against a few ribs, causing him to groan in pain as they collided. But he wasn't out just yet!

He felt the motion roll through his body and send Tsi-Tsi away. But before he could retreat, he raised his head slightly, only to receive a slap to the face-- and close to his eye. Giving a startled yell, the male responded in kind. He raised a paw and swung at the creamy yellow male's left. An eye for an eye!

He'd hit...something! Once! And then a blow of similar strength hit his cheek. Ow. At least it was his cheek and not his eye...right? Unfortunately, he was still off balance and Sharif just wasn't giving him a chance to recover. Tsi-Tsi would call it unfair, but really, that's what this whole match was about, right?

So he decided to do something a little different.

Instead of fighting to regain his balance, the yellow lion leaned in the same direction Sharif had pushed him with that blow, only taking steps towards the younger lion, intending on leaning over on him until they both collapsed.

You know, like cubs.
