The moment was a battle of things he couldn't stand, and what honestly spurred him to retreat was Jory trembling. The last thing he wanted was for the afanc to stress about a problem that wasn't really his, though Zaire supposed it now was his considering their relationship. But still to bring him stress was the last thing Zaire wanted.
Then again last thing he wanted, really, was to face Helik in the moment.
"Sorry...I'll explain later.." He offered as they started off, a glance of concern passed down to Jory. On a held breath Zaire tried to get as much distance between Helki and them as possible. For a few sweet seconds it had seemed to work, until he heard the cry of no. It felt like lightning struck, a tingle ran his body causing his toes to curl down viciously against the sole of his shoes and brain to cease function as Helki clung.
He could tell just by the tone, Helki was crying and he hated it, hated that it made him weak to the other.
The hold had glowing blues forced down to Helki, but the automatic mode he went into didn't process to shake him off. Anxiety built up and Zaire's body stiffened on both sides, against Helki and Jory. A soft whine of distress came from looking down into the wolf boils eyes, Helki had given him much in their time together, he knew this. And while not all the moments they spent together was sunshine and daisy, it had by no means been a terrible relationship. But Jory, the things he felt for him now, how happy he honestly was.
Torn, Zaire finally tore his gaze from the other only to have it rest on the floor where his features would curl into a look of puzzlement while searching for the right things to say.
Selfish.
Helki had always called him this, as did many creeple, maybe he was but he didn't have the courage to upset either of them. So he shut down, glancing up only to lock on those tears that ruled him in their relationship. Helki didn't deserve- no- Zaire tried to correct himself, reminding himself he had told the other boil. He had, jack damn it!
Zaire's heart twisted looking at tears, confusing further at his feelings, a hand tightened around Jory, selfishly asking for a rescue pleading while trying to pull him in closer for the comfort he brought.

A wordless nod, fingers tight against Zaire's arm, as the boil tried to lead them away. He tried not to think, to shut everything out but the feel of the boil at his side, and the arm under his hands, but it was hard. He reached for white noise, that defining silence that was nothing but static. A way to hide, when he couldn't couldn't physically disappear.
Zaire's arm was his anchor, keeping him present, but he was also a source of comfort.
Though when he stopped, and glowing blues fell on Helki as the other boil cried, pleaded, it struck him like a blow to the chest. It made breathing hard, and that ugly presence deep in his core curled out, and brought with it nothing but negativity.
Doubt. Painful and crushing. It struck like a thin blade between the ribs, and those blue hands would loosen as moisture stung at his eyes. Zaire wasn't his... He belonged to someone else. He'd taken something that didn't belong to him...
Then thick fingers tightened around his own, and Zaire was tugging him closer, it made him blink, puzzled, and a new ugliness crawled up to crush the first. Jealously was foreign to the boil, he'd never felt it before, but it was there now, hardening baby blues that snapped up to narrow on the tear wolf that clung to his boilfriend's arm.
He gave Zaire's hand a squeeze, reassuring, then moved to step between the two, a hand coming up to circle Helki's wrist in an attempt to remove his grip. Successful or not he'd stand with his back against the taller boil's chest, tail curling around his leg. His voice, when he spoke, was soft, but firm. "You're being very rude."

Stunned. Silent and stunned, the mahamba had been simply staring between the two boils before him for what seemed like hours to his own mind. Had Jory really stepped up like that, for him, why? Was he not mad, had Zaire not ruined it for them as well? The monster cringed as Helki hissed, bowing his head a little weakly, it wasn't that he couldn't hold his own battles.
Though when it came to matters of the heart.
That was a different story all together. . . . .
Zaire just didn't want to hurt either of them, no matter how he felt about each of them currently, they were both still special to him. Which left him stumbling over what to do at the moment, run had be the plan but Helki had put a stop to that. Under the stare of the wolf boil he felt crippled, though the afanc between them gave strength. Just the sight of a boil he knew would fold under social pressure to stand between him and a stranger, was enough to bring a clear of throat after initial shock settled.
It had to be said didn't it, there was no way around things since their previous talk hadn't went as well as Zaire had hoped. Glowing blue eyes settled onto Helki's lovely set, even teary they were still some of Zaire's favorites. "...Helki." As he started his tail flicked to catch against Jory's curling around it as if to hold him in place almost. "....You didn't do..anything wrong.." Zaire spoke firmly, that he wanted him to know, and he did owe him an explanation but it was hard to explain. Because what he felt for Helki wasn't exactly, totally, gone. "It's.." The monster glanced off on a deep sigh, he couldn't think of words aside form the truth, the short truth, "...I like Jory..I know..it's not the best explanation...but I told you...we weren't dating, haven't been..." The last part was stressed on a glance to Jory, Zaire wasn't a cheat, fickle maybe but not a cheater.
On a shrug he waited for a slap, finishing with, "that's it..." That's all he could say, at least at this moment.

It took everything the boil had not to back down, but he faced that angry smile with stubborn features, even if long ears had drooped back as far as they could possibly go. And he was still trembling, a fine shake that Helki would feel in the hand that was wrapped around his wrist before Jory released him and tangled his fingers together before him, like a shield. "Not this." The answer came almost automatically, without any actual thought. "Not here."
The maul was packed with people, they were being bumped and jostled into as they stood in the middle of the wide walkway. Under normal circumstances the afanc would have been fighting off panic, but to have this sort of confrontation crop up out of the blue, anchoring them there...it felt like his pulse was going wild. He could hear it in his ears, taste it on the back of his tongue.
He didn't want to be there.
Zaire was a solid wight at his back, and he leaned back into him a little harder, swallowing down the rising anxiety attack. The brush of tail against tail made him blink, and he looked down as Zaire cleared his throat, watched that thicker tail curling around his own.
He froze as that deep voice came out, finally, and kept his gave down, watching his feet, their tails, the floor. He didn't want to look up, didn't want to see the look on the wolf's face. Afraid of what he might have seen in Zaire's. So he stood still, holding his own hands to keep from shaking apart, head bowed. Even if he had stepped between the boils, come to Zaire's rescue, he was still a coward. Still so afraid in that moment that he could barely think.
Words stood out, and he clung to him. The Mahamba liked him, he hadn't been with Helki when they had gotten together. Important things.

Jory wasn't sure how he felt as Helki ran off. Relief, certainly, but something else, something ugly that left him feeling guilty. Over all though he just felt drained, and now that all eyes were turning towards Zaire and himself he felt incredibly awkward. The shaking intensified, and he shrank back against Zaire's chest before the other taller boil apologized softly and took his hand to lead him away.
He went, silently, hanging on tightly to dark fingers as they wove their way quickly through the crowd and out of the maul.
Their date had been ruined, maybe more... The thought was enough to make Jory's chest hurt at they walked along, and he could feel himself folding away. He just wanted to get back to the school. After that he wasn't sure. Zaire wasn't saying anything, and Jory just let the silence stretch on, uncomfortable, even if the taller boil's grip was tight. It should have been reassuring, but his mind was an ugly place at the moment.
