Long ago, Keres had perfect the art of flying silenty. Slipping through the night sky like a knife. Every bit as quick and deadly as she scouted out her preferred prey.

Silence was an asset. She hunted primarily by sound when she soared high over the earth. Too far up to smell. She preferred the night - spreading over the earth like a great pair of wings like the Raven Mocker himself. It concealed her. Her black fur easily lost against the night sky. Only he flash of the white wings spoke of impending death.

But sound.... sound was an excellent way to hunt. She listened for them - sometimes loud and piercing cries and shouts of pain. Sometimes soft and wet moaning or groaning as their life was being pulled from them. Every time she heard it - the call of death... she would answer. She would land, and show herself to the dying like some kind of reaper. There to release their grasp on their bodies and send them off to the other realm - kicking and screaming. It gave Keres great pleasure to know that her face was the last one that her victims would see. When they knew death was coming to take them and it was her that appeared.

She had been flying for a few hours - ever since the sun turned its face and fled from the night - when she hear it. A ragged, anguished cry perforating the night. It was a high-voice. A young mare, perahps, or even a foal. Darting and weaving, silent as an owl, she touched down just feet from the struggling form.

It was a young mare. Probably not much past her first year. Her back leg had been snared in what looked like a pair of metal teeth. Her ankle was swollen and oozing. It looked like she had been snared for perhaps more than a day. Her lips were cracked and dry, and her eyes rolled as she looked over at the soft thud that accompanied Keres' landing.

They widened, panicked. And Keres smile. The mare knew the bony face of death when she saw it. Keres stalked forward, still silent, like a great jungle cat, her tail lashing in anticipation.

Love is not one sided. Love is giving as well as receiving. Giving love, giving of yourself can reap great rewards..

His mothers words echoed in his head as he walked, his large, crimson and black wings still against his side as usual, faint strands of old spider web clinging to them, his disuse of the appendages had meant that the muscles that moved them had weakened and so they really didn't move much at all now unless he made a concerted effort, and now and again a spider would make them its home for a while.

The thoughts were soon discarded, leaving nothing behind, as he heard some peculiar noises a ways in the distance from where he was walking, and after taking a moment to work out exactly where they were coming from, meandered in that direction. He had little else to do so decided he may as well look as not. He wasn't fearful, though the noises weren't something he was used to. Just curious enough to take the time out of doing nothing to go and investigate.

Eventually he came across both mares; what he realised was prey and predator. He made little effort to hide the noise he was making whilst approaching, so he was fairly confident that the winged mare who was advancing on the wounded younger knew that he was there.

'Did you put her in that?' were the first words out of his mouth. More curiosity flared within, as he wondered if he should be helping in some way, or just stand and see how things played out. He looked calmly at the older mare, taking in her appearance which was foreign to him as seeing something struggle for life.

Keres sprung, her hooves driving the mare toppling onto her side with another screech of fear and pain. Keres perched on her, crouched, her long spade-tipped tail lashing behind her in anticipation. The trapped mare was already weakened. The infection from her leg having traveled into her blood and robbed her of any fight remaining. She only barely struggled under the weight of the kalona mare, her weakened whinnies sobs as she lay her head back on the ground, eyes rolling as she watched the bone-maked mare poised to strike.

"Death has found you," She whispered, almost seductively to her prey.

An ear flicked. Someone else was there. A challenger? Some defender of the weak? She sneered, flashing a long curved canine tooth as her eyes sought out the source of the noise.

Her eyes narrowed in irritation as she saw the winged stallion and herd his words. She was not in the mood for a scuffle. She rarely was. Or for inane questions.

"Did you come here to save her?" She taunted, redirecting instead of answering. "You are too late."

Ravana watched the weakening struggles of the young mare, his nose sniffing at the scent in the air of the already spilled blood. He didn't answer the adult mare straight away, instead taking a slightly circular path around her to go over to where the trapped mare was. He stood there for a long moment, and then turned back to the winged mare and looked at her now.

'No? Save her. No, don't know her. What are you going to do with her?' he asked, asking out of sheer ignorance as to her breed, let alone that she was a predator and could be a potential threat to himself, let alone the poor, half-dead one that he was stood near.

Keres smiled, slowly, as the flutter wasn't stupid enough to think himself a hero. Or... perhaps he was stupid. Did he not know what she would do? A dark chuckle escaped her lips, and the idea of a witness echoed pleasantly in her mind. Typically, the only soquili that got a good look at her were on their way out. She was their death. Their last glimpse. But no one bore witness to her 'reaping'.

"Why don't you watch and see?" She whispered with narrowed eyes, locking them with the stallion. He had strange markings, that one. Almost skeletal.

Quickly, she struck. Her jaws latched over the mare's throat and squeezed. With expert precision, her canines found the arteries in the neck and she was rewarded with a hot, fresh spurt of blood straight into her mouth. Hot blood on the cold night... there was nothing more satisfying... oh... except perhaps that gurgling, strangled noise that the mare was making.

Ravana really didn't know what she would do..his life had been a sheltered and safe one thus far, and she was as far from his genteel family as could conceivably be.

'I suppose..' Ravana said, a tiny pricking feeling along his spine, as though something was gently nudging him that this was a bad situation. He did want to see what was going to happen though.

The sudden movement caught him a touch by surprise, his crimson red wings giving a slight twitch as she tore into the neck of the young mare. A sharp smell touched his nostrils, and he watched the faint, dying struggles with nothing more than a few muscle twitches to betray any thought or emotions that were being processed.

'Dead?' he asked, after moments had passed, and an eerie silence seemed to have fallen.

Keres' eyes flashed up to the flutter: scrutinizing, judging as her jaws were still clamped on the mare's throat and she swallowed the first mouthfull of hot, fresh blood. There was pleasure in her expression of one who had complete control, of one who was doing what she was meant to do, and feeding upon a truly delicious meal.

When she had discerned that he was frozen in place and was not about to be stupid and make a threat of himself, she took another bite... two, savoring her kill and the hot meat in the chill night air.

She heard his question but for a moment she did not respond. This was to be done on her time, in her manner.

Finally, she picked her head up, regarding him. "Dead." She answered with a note of finality.

The smell of blood was heavy in the air now; the sound of flesh tearing and being eaten by the predatory mare caused an uneasy turning in the pit of his stomach but still he stayed. He didn't fly, and he was only able to walk (or run) away, and as much as he felt disconnected to pretty much everything, he did not want to die. He felt that running from the spot would invite that.

Eventually he found his voice, an inner something nudging him to speak. To question what he had seen so that he could understand. He didn't feel bad for the dead mare, she was almost forgotten by him and the remnants of her only tugged at his senses.

'Do you do that often?' he asked, his pale eyes searching for her dark ones.

Keres' dark, silvery eyes flashed in the moonlight as she held the flutter's gaze unwaveringly, licking at the dripping, hot blood as it ran from her mouth. It was strange - this flutter stallion, standing and watching, unmoved from his position as she blatantly consumed her prey in front of him. Killing, for Keres, was usually a private business. Something almost intimate between her and her victim as she visited their death upon them. But still, having an audience, having someone live to remember her sent a particular satisfaction through her.

And yet, for all of the victims she had claimed, she had found that flutters - typically - were weak of constitution. Small and frail, they did not often last long. She would not have guessed that a flutter like he would have had as much constitution.

A smug grin found its way to her face at his question. A delicious question. "Death comes to take everyone sooner or later." She responded, letting her voice drop to a whisper so he might have to strain and lean in to hear her. "And it is my deep pleasure to be its representation."

Ravana could see that the mare was eager to speak about what she did. She seemed to enjoy him being there; for him he could claim no such emotion as enjoyment, just a continuing detached observation. The smell of the carcass, the blood tang in the air had become something in the background, his attention directed at the mare.

'So you are Death?' he asked, his ears flicking as he caught the quiet words.

'So you would kill me. Kill me now?' he asked, a slight jump in his pulse happening when he asked the question as he knew that if her answer was yes, if she attacked, his only recourse would be to run. He wondered if she was swift enough to catch him, he felt that she would be.

The flutter stallion's words were honey in her ears. Beautiful, soothing and chilling at the same time. She had whispered such a thing to her victims on many occasion. But to hear another soquili state those words.... it was glorious.
Keres was not insane... not ... entirely at least. She did not believe herself to be Death itself... just... a being of it. A servant, and a part of the concept. Still.... just a piece of the whole, but an important piece nonetheless.

"I am Death's whisper. Sometimes, I am her hoof, sometimes, I am her fang. I serve her, and I am a part of her. And thus, she is a part of my being. She runs through my veins, and she directs my soul." She continued her speech in a delicate whisper, pausing, occasionally, to continue her feast. There were other beings of the night who also appreciated a fresh corpse. She might deliver some to their death, but she knew she was not the largest predator in the night.

"I have not killed you, flutter, because it is not yet your time. Death has not branded you with her mark. Now... cross me, and your may find your fate has changed." She grinned wickedly.

Ravana had not the slightest idea that his simply stated words were pleasing to the mare. He would certainly have not meant them be thus, he was just speaking his mind. He listened as she spoke, soundly slightly crazed as she continued to eat her kill. The tearing noises bought up fresh thoughts that threatened his usual detached state of mind, and it made him curious, which led to him asking a question.

'What does it taste of?' he said, staying stock still for a moment, let it not be said that he made any attempt to look like anything than a dispassionate bystander, and not like prey to be run down.

Fascinating. Absolutely fascinating. Keres shifted her weight subtly from one front hoof to another - not unlike a cat as the Flutter's curiousity began to lure him.

"Perhaps death has left her mark on you," she purred as she stared him full in the face with viscera hanging from her chin. "Your face does seem to bear her smile.." Bemusement filled her as her tail lashed. "Come then, moth. Care you to taste? See if She has a bigger role for you to play in this world?"

She did not budge an inch from where she crouched predatorily over the carcass, challenging the nerve of this flutter.

Ravana's wings moved slightly, unconsciously as he continued to look at the mare. The smell of the blood and torn flesh continued to assail him and his nose gave a few twitches as his body and mind went back and forth, trying to work out if what he was seeing repelled or intrigued him more.

"Death has left no mark on me." he replied, his voice betraying no hint of the doubt he felt about his own appearance. His sisters were no less unusual in their own ways, but considerably less darker than he, and he knew that his character was at odds with his loving family unit. What had influenced him he still did not know, but he did not wish the strange mare to feel that she knew him.

"No." he said, his voice steady. He had veered away from what little disturbed feelings he might have felt at the kill, and seeing the mare eat before him, but that didn't mean he would eat or even taste meat.
"What you offer doesn't interest me, and even if it did I would not want your seconds."

He was not sure if he should speak as if he were issuing some sort of challenge, but he couldn't see his way (whole and uninjured) out of their encounter without seeming strong.
