Usually, Hisse was a very mindful and by the book cub and kept very close to her family. Usually. Heck, Hisse could be a bit of a tattletale when others were not on their best behavior or tried to sneak out. However, Hisse didn't always color in the lines when it came to her self and the rules. There were good reasons to bend the rules every once in a while.

Today the cubs reasoning was the Sentinel's on march and doing drills. The group of Sentinels had passed by the dens. Their shadows reached out on to the dens wall which stirred Hisse in to an awaken state. With in no time the cub was out of the den and in the brush watching as the lions marched on by.

Whoah! So cool!

Hisse stayed in the brush and watched as the group disappeared in to the mists. The she cubs head filled with dreams of one day joining in to that rhythmatic march and serving her own honorable duty to the pride. She would make her family and pride proud and protect from any red pelted outsiders with an iron paw.

For a moment the cub might have slipped in to day dreams of what it would be like to be in combat taking on ten, no, fifty red pelted blood thirsty lions and winning.

But right now the lioness was but a cub and those dreams were very far off. She'd work hard to achieve them of course, but the cub knew she'd probably should attempt to sneak back in to the safety of the den.

Crack.

Well she would have if it hadn't been for that branch at the mouth of the den. The cub stood there frozen with a face of true horror. Had she woken the den? It had only been one little teeny tiny branch. Cautiously the cub took another step forward.

Like his sister, Daeron had observed the sentinels' passing, but he had not thought a great deal about it. After ascertaining that the shadows did not belong to anything particularly threatening, he had been quite content to go back to sleep. Except something in the den was moving and making noise, and for someone who slept as lightly as Daeron did, that was a problem.

He blinked his eyes open and looked around, initially spotting nothing out of the ordinary in the den. Piles of fur which were the sleeping bodies of his siblings, the assorted paraphernalia they brought home with them from time to time, some leftover meat...nothing to remark upon. It didn't occur to him to count his siblings, or do anything more than try to get back to sleep, until something crackled at the mouth of the den.

Now Daeron was completely awake, his fur fluffing up in a futile attempt to look larger and more threatening. He bared his teeth and stomped toward the mouth of the den, his weight too minimal to make any noise, despite his gait. Fighting wasn't really his thing, but defending loved ones absolutely was, and if no one else was awake, the task obviously fell to him.

Or it would have done if the supposed intruder wasn't just his stupid sister. Daeron groaned softly and plopped his butt down, waiting for her to notice him in the shadows.

There was no response to the crackle snap of the branch as far as Hisse could tell. Very gingerly she took another step, and another an another. Daeron lurking with in the shadows was not noticed as the female cub inched her way forward. Every paw step was more bold than the last and quicker as well. Had she gotten away with sneaking out? Looked like it to Hisse.

Her maw widened in to a self assured grin.

All was going well. Hisse was pretty sure that she'd gotten away with sneaking away until she was close enough to the shadows to make out a shape of another cub lingering. The female gasped.

"I was... Er.." The stammering began. "Errmm... strolling to see if .. safe and ... " Her face fell in to the expression that read defeat. "Don't tell."

Daeron blinked. It hadn't occurred to him to tell. Sure, Hisse had broken the rules, but they were kind of silly rules anyway, in his opinion. They lived safely in the pride, and the sentinels had just gone by. They couldn't be any safer if they tried.

"Uh, sure. Okay," he agreed. He was definitely too young to figure out that because she was something of a tattletale, Hisse expected others to be, too. Daeron mostly figured no harm had been done, and a great deal of harm would be done if they woke everyone up.

"Are we safe?" he asked. It was difficult to tell if he was teasing her or genuinely curious, but he peered around Hisse as if he actually wondered, so probably he had asked in earnest.

The lionesses ears lifted and her body laxed in relief. Daeron wasn't going to tell? This was fantastic news and now she could breath again. Part of the lioness had to wonder if there was an angle he was playing but most of Hisse was just too relieved to care. Being in trouble was something she feared. The disappointment, she couldn't bare it.

"Truly and really?" Had to be asked to be sure, "You mean it!" She pepped up again, "You're a pretty okay lion Daeron." The smile stayed put.

The question of if they were safe didn't even erase the smile from the she cubs maw. It just grew wider.

"You better believe we're safe. I just saw a ton of the Sentinels on march to go brave any danger. With them around there isn't any trouble we should be concerned with. I bet they can handle any kind of threat with the way they fight." Hisse had never actually witnessed Sentinels training but the cub imagined it was probably a lot like the play fighting she did with her siblings. Speaking of which, Hisse was currently in a pounce position with her rear up in the air. There was a little playful wiggle.

"I bet they have to train hard so they can fight any kind of bad guy," And the female was in the air toward Daeron.

Daeron was pleased to have made his sister happy, but he really couldn't see what the big deal was. Everyone would be mad at both of them if they were woken up. It just made more sense to keep quiet and disturb no one. He returned her smile and tried to convince his fur to lie flat again. There was no threat, no one to intimidate, and therefor no reason for him to be all fluffed up.

"Probably," Daeron agreed, eying Hisse warily. He knew what pounce positions looked like, and he knew that he was hardly the best in the litter when it came to evading being pounced. "But something really big, or a lot of smaller somethings could come, and then maybe they wouldn't be able to handle it."

He had tried to distract her from her purpose with talking, but to no avail. She was already flying through the air and he was going to go down. Of course. He reminded himself that he was going to be a magi and then no one would pounce him, but that seemed a long way off and right now he was being squashed by his sister. Again. At least he hadn't squeaked or something truly unmanly.

"Get off, or I will tell," he grumbled, trying to dislodge his sister. It was time to sleep, not play, and he very much wanted to get back to doing the former.

That smug grin stayed pressed to the females maw. She'd landed the pounce and was quite proud of this fact. That was, until Daeron said he'd tell. Her posture and her face dropped all at once. Very quickly the lioness was off of her brother.

"Spoil sport." She grumbled back at him.

"And besides, that is why we live with in the mists in case some one bigger came we could just run away and hide," Out loud that didn't sound very brave or impressive. The lioness had to think that over again. Run a way and hide. Nope, that still sounded quite cowardly.

"I.. I think we're going to be just fine. Besides you know dad would probably make mince meat of anyone that tried their luck at that. Dad's scary." She puffed out her chest quite proud of that.

"But.. Do you really think that... some one might come in to the mists?" There was now doubt. She needed reassurance that this big and bad or small and sneaky boogeyman was not out there and that everything was safe. Her eyes were wide and trusting.

"Yep," he agreed. He was being very agreeable. It was a side effect of sleepiness.

He wasn't bothered by the idea of hiding in the mists. That was how things were done. It was a cleverness thing. He didn't want to bother explaining that to his sister right now though. That would delay the sleeping even longer. He restricted himself to saying, "The mists are useful."

"Between the mists and our father? Even if someone does show up, they'll get lost and then minced," he reassured her. He had to put that kind of faith in the warriors of the pride because he absolutely wasn't one, and so he had to rely on them totally for protection. Knowing their father was one of them made it much easier for him. He trusted his father implicitly. He was young, after all.

"Come on. Let's go back to sleep," he suggested hopefully.

Daeron sounded like he knew what he was talking about and the reassurance that their father and mists were there to protect them if all else failed was reassuring. In all honesty, the female really had no idea if there were actually other beings trying to get in or not. But that didn't matter. Cubs were excitable and Hisse was no acception to this rule.

"Thats good to know." She nodded yawning her self. Daeron's invitation to go back to sleep was an acceptable offer. Sleepily the she cub gave her brother a nod.

"Yes. We should get back before they wake up." She yawned again.

Daeron was delighted (in a lazy, sleepy sort of way) that Hisse had gone along with his suggestion to go back to sleep. Where she got all her energy, he would never know. There were days when it seemed like simply stumbling out of the den and to his lessons would sap all of his strength. Well, no. Not his strength. It wasn't like he was weak or anything. He just seemed to always be tired.

He led the way back to where everyone else lay sleeping and tried to calculate as he walked how many more hours of sleep he could expect. It wasn't exactly a cheering thought process, but the number was not so low that he saw no reason to give up on sleep completely, like he did some nights when he was woken by a sound, or an unfortunately placed kick, or for no discernible reason whatsoever.

"Besides," he mumbled as he curled up into a comfortable position, "you're here, aren't you? You'd kill them good and dead."

Sleepily the lioness cub agreed. She would kill them good and dead. The little brown body snuggled up close to her brother and fell asleep.
