Maleleji was up late. He was busy trying to make sure everything was in the correct location, turning a rock slightly, since it had been pushed out of place by someone walking over it. It made him shake when his area was messed up and he had memorized it to the last detail.
He gave a deep breath, inspecting the area again, checking it for the third time before he was completely satisfied. He grinned, walking away from his area and continuing his daily activities. He wondered if his sister was busy and would show him a thing or two about his job.
He was thrilled to find that she had been a huntress before she had become alpha - and according to their mother, a good one at that. He looked up to Maziwa greatly, though he never aspired to become the next Alpha.
He wandered closer to where his sister's den was, peering inside. The counted the pup's inside: One, two, th-... Abidemi was missing from the den! His nose wiggled, smelling for the small pup, and taking a new path to try to find her.

It was way too cold for the small pup in the mountain, Mal thought. He found it cold, and he was already much older than her. His coat was thicker than this baby niece's and it worried him greatly. The white male continued on his path, keeping his ears open and his nose to the ground to catch her sent.
Unfortunately, she still smelled a lot like his big sister, having supposed to be mostly Den-bound still. Once they were older, they would have their own unique scent that he'd be able to pick apart, but not yet, not now.
He froze when he heard whimpering.
"Abidemi?" he called, bounding forward a bit to see if he could hear her whimpering easier - hoping he got closer. "Where are you, little one?"

Mal's ears flicked forward at the sound, hearing the small pup - his little niece. It was terrifying. He bounded forward in the snow, hopping over some obstacles. He began to dig much of the freezing cold snow away from the pup, tearing through until he saw some orange. He took a deep breath of relief, though he hated the cold that was radiating from her small body.
"Abi, are you okay?" he asked, nearly breathless with fear. Nothing could happen to his sister's pups - nothing. Not in the lands, not when there were so many around that could watch for dangers such as this. He hoped, prayed to the gods that she was alright. He nuzzled her gently, puffing a warm breath of air at her.

"I know, I know, I know," he murmured, nuzzling her again. "I'll get you back to the den so you can get warm again, just hold on," he pushed some snow away from her, pulling up by her scruff. She dangled a bit from his mouth and he carefully started back towards the den.
He didn't want to run, not wanting to jostle the freezing pup, but he sped up his gait to get there quickly.

Maleleji sighed, a soft sound of relief. He counted the pups again; one, two, three. All there, all safe. He nuzzled his little niece. "It's okay, it's okay, it's okay, I promise," he murmured. "I was so worried, I was afraid you'd get hurt," he was always worried, always and forever.
He counted again: one, two, three. All safe. It took him another time over to be satisfied that he didn't miscount, nudging her back into her pile of siblings. He'd watch this time, making sure none of them wandered out.
They would be safe, and perhaps when the snow cleared up, he wouldn't be this uneasy. It was his first winter as an adult, and definitely only the first time he had seen snow. It scared him, and perhaps one day it wouldn't.
But that was not now. "Tomorrow," he promised her. "I'll help you, just sleep now - recover from the cold."
