Her desperate bid for freedom had begun... well, she couldn't remember just now how long she had been running. A long while. Many days, most certainly. She staggered along blindly, trying unsuccessfully to make her mind focus on how many times the sun had risen or set. She shook her head to try and clear it, but this caused the world to spin dizzyingly. She staggered drunkenly to the side, her exhausted legs making a token attempt to keep her upright, even if her sense of balance hadn't yet quite communicated that she was near to falling.

She was in a worse state than she ever had been before. Always she had managed quite well to feed herself, to keep herself well groomed... defend herself. Her whole body shuddered at this last thought. Defend herself. Ha. She'd never had a chance, not this time. She'd suffered at the paws and teeth of the abusive male who had called himself her Pad, but it had been worth it. Even though claw marks raked directly across one eye, now swollen shut, even though her body was covered in scars of shallower scratches or scabbing, deeper cuts... it was all worth it to have gotten two of her daughters out of the situation.

But now, after having run for as long and as far as possible, her dull mind wouldn't accept that she'd gone as far as was lionly possible. Her ribs, spine, shoulder, and hip bones all showed clearly through er ragged, dirty pelt. Even her face looked sunken and sharp-edged. She staggered again, unaware of the border she had crossed, her one good eye determinedly trying to keep her facing the same direction... away from the scattered pride of angry Pads.

Adin was tired. He was always tired, but he was more tired today for an unknown reason. Yawning widely, the male lion stretched himself out lazily as his beloved friend, Afua, soared over head of him. He may be a lazy scout, but Afua wasn't. He kept his lion companion on his toes. Especially when he wouldn't shut up if something was a miss upon their borders. Usually it was something stupid. So many false alarms that Adin was starting to regret finding Afua when he did.

Now molten yellow eyes looked up at the black and white bird before Afua let out an unholy screech. He winced and rubbed his face with a paw before nodding. With the bird leading the way, Adin ran, following him over rocks and slipping once or twice.

Sliding to a stop when Afua started circling a ..lioness..? That looked half dead, the lion blinked and let his brows knit. He was instantly on alert though it was clear she wasn't going to do any damage to him or the pride, he was still anxious. Swallowing a little, he toed himself closer to her, examining how small she looked. "...Are you alive?"

Somehow she had managed to slow, stop, and slump unconscious. Her body simply couldn't take any more, and was shutting down on her. At his words, she sluggishly raised her head, eyes only half open, neck wobbly. "I... ah... what?" she mumbled, obviously not seeing or hearing anything clearly. His movement caught her half-lidded eyes, and she turned her unsteady head towards him. Slowly blinking her eyes open more, she tipped her head up... up... up... until her defocused eyes reached the level of his face.

Her eyes suddenly snapped into sensibility. As she took in his mane, his face, her pupils got very large very quickly. Her body began to thrash, and eventually it was clear that she was attempting to back away from him. Her depleted body simply wasn't up to the task, however, so she merely flailed where she was. Her stark alarm flashed suddenly to despair and fury. She tried to hiss with her dry throat, but it came out as a ragged, throat-tearing sound instead.

It was a male. Another male. Another hated male! Leaning over her, looming over her, coming to claim her again! It might not be Raja, but it didn't have to be. It was on of THEM! Her panic was quite real, her hatred burning hot, but her physical form simply could not contain or endure such feelings for very long.

He'd been watching the female closely. She looked a mess, more than half dead and with the way she was thrashing now, it looked like her time might be soon. His ears pressed against his head as he stayed his place, shaking his head. "No, it's okay! It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you.." Adin was trying to keep his voice low so he didn't startle her any more than he already had by appearing before her. Swallowing thickly, his tail seemed to curl between his legs. She sounded so bad. It only took a split second for him to come to a decision on what he needed to do. He had to find her some water. He instructed Afua to stay there with her, to try to calm her down while he was gone.

Off he took towards a river. He knew there were large leaves from a tree there. If he could get water in the leaf and drag it back to her, she'd have something to drink. Eating would be a different story. He'd have to find her.. something. A rabbit maybe?

He was panicking by the time he got back to the female. He was dragging the leaf and walking backwards, stopping every now and then to make sure he was going the right way. "I've got water," he mumbled around the stem of the leaf, dragging it ever closer before swallowing. Once he got it close enough, to prevent her from thrashing and attempting to scream again, he backed away and laid down, his head going to his paws to wait.

Well, at least he had left her alone. Though... he had left a bird beside her? She eyed the avian warily, but there wasn't really anything to fear from a mere bird. Or so she felt. If she'd seen herself from the outside in, she might have considered otherwise. She was in no condition to defend herself from anything more aggressive than a butterfly. On principle, since the bird was clearly 'with' the male, she glared warningly at the black and white feather-head. Or at least, she tried to. Who knows how silly she really looked, all weak and wobbly and beat up, trying to frighten a bird with a mere look.

When the male returned, she had to blink her eyes to be sure she was seeing right. He was... backing towards her? So baffled was she, the usual fury didn't burn quite so bright upon his return. When he revealed that he was tugging a leaf along the ground, she was even more confused. Why bother with dragging a leaf? But when it was presented to her and he'd backed off, she finally realized why. Water. He'd... brought her water? In a leaf? She turned a bleary and suspicious look to him, but couldn't help feeling surprised at the thoughtfulness. If she hadn't been feeling so droopy, she'd have suspected it was a leaf that would drug the water or something. But what would be the point to that? He could easily overpower her in her current state, if that was his goal.

Still eyeing him warily, she inched herself forward and dipped her nose to touch the water. It smelled... green. And wonderful. Before she knew it, she'd lapped up most of the meager offering. She hadn't realized how terribly parched she was until that scent had entered her nostrils. Now she weakly pinned the leaf down and licked the last drops from the surface of the large leaf. That done, she lifted her heavy head to regard the male, who laid meekly at a distance, watching her. She mulled her options in reaction.

"More. Please." It came out as a croak, but was a good deal more civil in tone than even she had thought it might have been. Startled at herself, she withdrew a little, ears angling back again from the more relaxed position they'd slid into while she drank. This wasn't how things were anymore, with males being nice and kind... were they?
