Cinaed was seriously considering changing his career course away from hunter, and something along the lines of soldier or guard, to work his way towards sentinel. Now that he had judged himself against an outsider, it seemed good for him to test his strength against a fellow Firekin. What better way to do that than linger around the training grounds? He knew that someone would approach him, as a lot of Firekin wanted to keep their skills honed, regardless of rank. With the heightened sense of uncertainty, it was important to be able to protect yourself and your fellow kin.

"I'm prepared for a training exercise," he announced to anyone who would listen.

Ruber was still trying to figure out how the black lioness had managed to beat him. Beat him bloody, in fact, his nose was still quite tender and the claw marks upon it had not yet healed. He had to admit, even if only to himself, that perhaps there was something to her rank of Brigadier.

It obviously had to be that she was almost magically better than him, and not the fact that his skills could use more work. The red and yellow lion was certain he could beat all comers if he only had the chance!

His head whipped around as he heard another voice, a male one, announce that he was looking for an opponent. Perfect! Ruber headed over to the stranger.

"I'd be happy to duel you," he informed the other lion. The black-maned red lion was...big. Bigger than Ruber, for sure. He definitely had the look of someone born to these lands. The younger lion felt a niggling of doubt about his ability to win this fight.

Cinaed's red eyes narrowed at the stranger before him. None of his markings were even familiar to him, and that made Cinaed realize that he was rogue-born. Part of the kin now, but this wasn't exactly what he had in mind when he came here to test himself. Ah well, experience was experience, and at least this time it was one who had previous proven his value to become part of the firekin.

"Then let it begin," Cinaed said with a nod and a growl. He took a moment to circle, gauging this stranger as best he could with only the initial look. This seemed promising. As a test, he stopped suddenly and lashed out a paw at the red lion before him. He would do his damnest, he would.

Ruber dodged back quickly as he realized that the other lion was diving right into the battle. But he did get a light scratch one one forepaw from those outstretched claw. Nothing too serious, but still annoying. It was a graze, truly, no blood drawn yet. The younger lion bared his fangs and circled cautiously, careful to keep his footing and his balance on the shifting sand beneath his feet. He didn't want to humiliate himself again by attacking too soon.

So Cinaed got a little excited and barely made contact. At least his first hit wasn't a horrible disaster. He didn't trip into the sand and leave himself wide open. He would need to be more patient in the future. Perhaps even let others take that first strike and react from that. Everything was a learning curve, but Cinaed didn't know too much of this history of the stranger he was fighting, and so did his best to be neutral in his reactions.

He thought it was interesting that Ruber was waiting, but he may have learned in the past that waiting for an opening was good defense. Cinaed didn't want to wait forever, and so he struck again, attacking that same area he had just barely grazed. He huffed when he felt his paw hit the solid form of a body, and not air.

An involuntary roar of pain escaped Ruber's mouth as the old lion connected solidly with his left forepaw. That drew blood, he could tell easily enough. And the paw itself felt bruised from the impact. The younger lion flexed his injured limb, attesting to the fact that nothing was broken.

Yet.

Breathing more heavily thanks to the pain, Ruber continued circling. If he let his temper get the better of him, he'd end up on the ground again, he was certain. Better let things...cool off a bit. That way he wouldn't attack out of rage and so would do better...right?

Success felt good, but it was frustrating that he wasn't fighting back. Was he waiting for an opening? Cinaed was sure that he wouldn't give him one, but it was hard to constantly have your guard up, especially in a public area like the training grounds. Other lions would train, watch, move on through....it was distracting to say the least.

Still, in intrigued Cinaed enough that he circled as well, keeping his paces as similar to Ruber's as he could. Let's see how much patience the both of them had before someone grew impatient and threw out another attack.

Maroon eyes narrowed as Ruber realized that the other lion was matching his paces exactly. So...they were playing a waiting game now? Well, the red lion was through with waiting! If his opponent was waiting for him to make a move, let him try to anticipate this one!

The younger lion threw himself at his opponent, claws unsheathed and aiming for the bright red flank before him. He would make the older lion bleed, that was for sure. Then they'd see what happened next!

Cinaed winced, though he didn't cry out. A hissing escaped between his teeth as he felt the blow land hard, and the stinging feeling of blood slowly oozing out. So, is this what he had been waiting for? Cinaed had been careless in joining in on the waiting game, but he would learn from it.

For now, though, he would continue to wait, watch carefully at the body language of his opponent. Perhaps if he paid closer attention there, he would better understand how this younger lion fought. Plus, it gave him a moment to numb his brain away from the pain; it had been a while since he had been injured at all!

The younger lion bared his fangs in satisfaction as he reveled in that moment when his claws had sliced through flesh. That was what had been missing from his last duel, that moment when a blow connected exactly as he'd envisioned it. So either that black lioness had been unusually good at reading when he was about to strike, or he'd just had an off day against her.

He was feeling really good now. So good that Ruber decided to try clawing his opponent in the face. Unfortunately, said head was not where he'd expected it to be, and the younger lion overbalanced, barely catching himself on his outstretched paw before he fell.

Cinaed wasn't doing a good job in blocking out the pain, and Ruber probably would get satisfaction out of the fact that Cinaed was heavily favoring that side now. It wasn't possible to hide it all the way, and Cinaed figured there wasn't much of a point. It seemed that this challenge had a little more weight behind it than the red lion had anticipated, but Ruber was good, if just a bit hasty. He missed, and that gave Cinaed an opening.

The older lion lunged for the younger lion's left side of his neck, knowing that his left paw was injured, and that the thick mane of the adult would keep him for the most part padded. As much as Cinaed's side hurt, he wasn't out for an equal return in blood. Perhaps just in bruises.

Ruber snarled as he felt the bigger lion's blow land solidly on the left side of his neck. That was...clever, and cruel, to deliberately aim for the area where he'd taken a blow earlier. He waved the injured paw in the air, trying in vain to strike his opponent even as he tried to squirm out of the other's grip.

The younger lion was simply unable to bring himself to focus enough to figure out a solid way to get out of the other male's grasp. It wasn't that he was in too much pain, he just didn't have the experience or understanding of combat to find a solution for his problem.

Cinaed held on for a moment longer, clearly proving himself as the winner. At least, he felt that way, but he wasn't about to say anything with a mouthful of mane. Once that moment was over, he let go and took a step back, favoring his injured side.

"You hit me good," he said, though he didn't feel like boasting about a win. it was practice, and he didn't think he won by an overwhelming landslide. It was more like he took advantage of a good opening.

"You hit me better," the red lion responded, clearly less than pleased with this outcome. In fact, losing was becoming a rather frequent and unwelcome occurance in his life. Twice in a row this was. Obviously his skill was more lacking than he had believed.

In which case...he should probably practice more.

"You win, I lose," Ruber went on, turning and leaving. He had some serious thinking to do about what these last two duels had in common.
