Marsh gazed at the area around him with focused concentration, looking for any signs of movement where there shouldn't be any, or really, anything that looked out of the ordinary. When given the chance to reflect on the recent changes in his life, he was rather bemused by the change of events.

He'd always been a bit of a wanderer, moving from pack to pack, never staying in one area for two long, and never getting involved with the other travelers. Now he was a permanent member of a pack. He had a position with some authority and a great deal of responsibility. He took his job as head scout very seriously. He knew that he and the other scouts were responsible for keeping a close watch on the pack's lands and borders.

A younger scout came sneaking up behind him, quietly and efficiently. Marsh was rather pleased with his progress and gave the other scout a friendly nod. The younger male returned it eagerly before taking over his post.

Marsh slunk quickly through the area, staying cautious until he was well within the borders before he relaxed and moved into an easier stroll. He had nowhere specifically to go, but he was wound up after his watch. A walk would help relieve him of some of his energy before he returned to his den.

Kelello padded through the bones, wincing with each step. Though still quite young, her body had aged significantly; her mind, plagued with the wretched duty bestowed upon her. She scanned the boneyard for fellow slaves. It was her responsibility if even one of them slipped up on their duties - the Gods knew her "great" leader would inflict pain on her such that she had never - or perhaps once - felt before, should something go wrong.

Her young body sagged with pain, her neck itching along the line where Mafa had once set a bone collar against her soft skin. Fur had since disappeared along the bony choker, and she felt raggedy in body and spirit.

She paused. A sound. While her mind was wandering, she had come upon them. The hyenas.

Recognizing a face, Kelello immediately dipped into a frantic bow.

"Marsh," she acknowledged with a small whimper. Oh Gods.

Marsh was sheepishly surprised by the presence of the female wild dog. He'd allowed himself to get too involved in his own musings and despite her brighter coat, she had a talent for blending into the background. That was a rather uncharitable way of thinking about her, but it was true. It was a good trait for a slave to have.

Since he had such a history as a lone wanderer, Marsh did not find keeping slaves as important as many of the other pack members did. Some of his closest friends in the pack treated the slaves like they were invisible and some treated them worse than that. Marsh was not about to encourage a rebellion, but he tried to at least be civil and courteous to them.

"Kelello," he said, acknowledging her bow with a nod of his own. He didn't quite smile, though his voice held a hint of warmth.

He frowned as he took a closer look at the female. He didn't think she was that old, but she looked almost ancient and completely worn out. That was hardly acceptable, though there was probably nothing he could do to help her.

Kelello kept her head down, her body low, and fluffy orange tail tucked between her legs. While Marsh himself had never been particularly unkind to her, she feared hyenas in general and was taught to display submission to anyone and everyone, even the young pups.

"N-n-no one around the border, all is well," she said in one breath, dipping her head lower. She saw Marsh's eyes scan her frame, and she felt very small and vulnerable. It was embarrassing, what she had become.

Feeling a rush of weakness, Kelello's legs began to buckle. She felt dizzy, parched. The heat beat down on her. "I - is there," Kelello wheezed, "water."
