'HOUSTON (FOX 26) - She's been sitting by the door, patiently waiting for five days now.

"Hi sweetie, are you hungry?" neighbor Jennifer Carpenter asked in her sweetest voice.

No one knows her name, so neighbors call the dog things like "baby" and "sweetheart."

Looking in her eyes as she patiently waits for the front door to open puts a lump in your throat when you know the awful truth.

"They're not coming back," Carpenter said.

The family that lived here moved out over a week ago. They moved to Mississippi or so the story goes as it circulates through the tree-lined Friendswood neighborhood.

On Aug. 2, a neighbor discovered the dog in the back yard of the deserted home and opened the gate.

It was her chance to make a mad dash for freedom but instead, this girl and her unconditional love chose to wait by a door that will never open.

"She's not left; she's stayed by this door like she's been waiting for them to come home," Carpenter said.

The mother inside Carpenter got the best of her, so she and some other neighbors have been feeding the heartbroken dog.

Having a dog herself makes her wonder how someone could leave behind a member of the family.

"It's even heartbreaking for people who don't have animals to sit her and watch this go on," she said.

She has tried to get dog rescue groups interested but to no avail. She and other neighbors know calling animal control will mean this sad vigil will end, but so will the dog's life.

"She deserves a home," Carpenter said. "She deserves to be loved, not just thrown out like the garbage."'
