Best advice I can give ya is to realize your goal, acknowledge that it costs a lot, and save. It can be kind of daunting to have a lot of cash built up and not want to go spend it on short-sighted 'mini-wants', trust me. I just got through questing 3 items that were well over a million gold in total...

So slap some blinders on and keep your eyes on that kitten!
