I will willingly move this if it's in the wrong topic, but it's currently nearly 3 in the morning gonk

This might have been touched on already, but does anyone know of an easy herbal remedy to cure persistent sinus troubles? I've had small problems and a poor sense of smell for years and I've been told I've got narrow nasal passages, but every doctor I've seen has only been able to prescribe(sp?) horrible nasal sprays which have only made me gag. Badly. I can smell sometimes but I don't enjoy my lack of the sense (I can never tell when I've used too much incense until my sister comes into the room, starts choking and walks back out sweatdrop ) and I've now had a horrible trouble with constantly sniffing. It's not like a cold, just the feeling that I can't breathe properly making me sniff all the time which is getting embarrassing. Sometimes I cough badly too which is sooner or later going to affect my singing (which is very important to me).

Doctor's won't let me have any kind of surgery at this age, even if it would also stop my occasional nosebleeds that last from an hour or so to an entire weekend. Since all else has failed but there isn't any evidently serious condition present, I'm trying to look for some sort of alternate remedy that would help me stop sniffing, let me smell and breathe again before hayfever season comes around. Any ideas, guys?

Hmm tough one. I'll have to do some googling.

I'm not sure if this would help or not, but one time in a science class my teacher got us some ammonia smelling salts to smell. After smelling it I have never felt so clear headed before. It was like the smell had gone up my nose and taken away every cloudy feeling, especially my headache. Not sure if that would work, but something to look at I suppose....though I'm not sure if ammonia is good for you. Not in large quantities anyway.

Ammonia is not very good to be using regularly, it is also a major ingredient in a certain noxious gas. Long story short this is why parents say not to mix house cleaners.
Seek an herbal practitioner, preferably a certified one. In general I wouldn't recommend strong scents as they may desensitize what you have left.
I would talk to your primary care doctor, and say if you can't find a way to help then please direct you to a specialist who can. If they refuse contact a larger hospital, be prepared to tell them details of the nature of your symptoms and the medications you have tried, and what effect if any they had. I know this isn't really a easy, quick herbal fix. but I hope that it can help in some way.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, well there's a herbal medicine shop not far from my house which I might check out, I used to buy lavender oil from there. If they don't have anything I'll probably contact my GP again because I think she was being a bit too blunt - she recommended the sprays which then told her didn't work for me, then she had talked about some sort of crystals (not the rock kind, these little ones you put in a vaporiser or something) which I may not be able to get access to, then she basically said I was too young to have any surgery for it and that any kind of sinus drainage operation would be far too painful and time consuming. Tbh I would rather have a method that is NOT painful anyway sweatdrop

Smelling salts could be a last resort to use every so often, but I know that stuff isn't the best idea and not easy to get here. Are smelling salts always made with ammonia?

EDIT: I used to use one of those tiny Olbas inhalers but I had to use it so much that it gave me even more nosebleeds neutral

Ouch yeah, I tried that once. I think it was a Vicks one. First time I ever used it, nosebleed.

Nosebleeds kill me D= They sap all my energy. I use to have these really bad ones where I'd just bleed a lot, and then some kind of blood clot would come out of my nose at the end. Pretty creepy stuff. I had one at a theme park and had to go to the public bathrooms. I was in there so long that my dad was about to run off and find a first aider, coz he worried that I'd passed out and he was too nervous to go into a lady bathroom.

Sometimes I have nosebleeds that are incredibly strong and can make me feel faint. I've looked in the mirror before when bleeding and saw my pupils changing size irregularly in a sort of dizzy pattern neutral the most powerful one I remember lasted an entire day where I sat with an old (bake-a-cake-sized) plastic bowl watching TV, filled it twice and then it started again the next day. This is the kind of thing I would LOVE to somehow avoid sweatdrop

Ouch that sounds nasty =/ Mine only use to last around 30 minutes. I had one at a supermarket once and had to stick my head in a plastic bag and take a load of napkins from the cafe.

Well on the upside I've actually found out today that the shop not far from my house (mentioned earlier) has a multitude of herbs available for use so any recipe you throw at me just might be able to be done blaugh

Hmm well here's what I've found from googling:

http://herbalmusings.com/sinus.htm

http://www.hhesonline.com/health-articles/herbs-for-sinus-infection/

http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/herbal/msg0114061226300.html?36

I'm getting a cold, but hopefully I won't have nose bleeds D= I had a horrible pressure cold a few years ago, and I kept having so many nose bleeds I had to take 3 days off work, and when I got back to work I was still having nose bleeds. My boss came into the toilets to check on me xd
