They were sleeping, the little monsters. And with a friend keeping an eye on the cubs, she was free to get some fresh air and a bit of time to herself. That, the Guard decided, was the absolute worst part of motherhood - no time away from the kids. At least, not until they were a bit older. But she shouldn't think so harshly of them, their eyes had only just opened.

Still, it was a beautiful day and though she didn't dare stray too far from her den, damn if she wasn't going to enjoy it while she had the chance!

It was a quiet day all-around, Pingana had noticed, as he made his way back inward from the borders. There hadn't been a great deal to do outside of the typical patrol, as had actually been the case for some time now. And he was fine with that. It would be when they let their guard down that something happened, of course, so he was content to go about his days the way he always had and always would. It wasn't like he had much to distract him.

He was about half way home when he spotted a familiar lioness out and about. He knew of Saskiranel, they shared similar work space around the borders, and he knew she had been pregnant recently. Clearly she'd had the cubs now but they couldn't be very old yet. He wasn't terribly secretive in his gaze, it took a second to really take in the situation. He might have walked right on by but he didn't get much socialization if he didn't try.

"Back to work already?" he asked when he was near enough to be heard, his tone was almost serious but it was impossible to hide the joke.

In a small pride like the Kitwana'antara, it was easy enough to know the voices of most, if not all the adults. Smiling, the lioness turned to face her fellow.

"I'm afraid not for some time yet, Pingana," she replied. It would be weeks before she could resume even a portion of her normal duties, months before she would be back entirely. She'd miss it, she was sure, but at least this time she wouldn't be stuck only-the-Goddess-knew-where with only Mel for a companion.

"So the rest of you will just have to keep picking up the slack," Saskiranel concluded cheerfully. She hadn't been back very long before her pregnancy had forced her to cut back on her work as a Guard, so in all likelihood nothing would've changed too much.

"Pity," he remarked, though her cheer made him smile. She was a good guard, he didn't need to interact with her regularly to know that. It said plenty that she was willing to go off with an Apothecary for a while. At least, Pingana thought so. Maybe they were friends.

"How many did you have?" he asked curiously, changing the subject slightly and deciding for the more polite question rather than asking about having healthy cubs. That was a tricky question to ask around here.

It was very refreshing to have a conversation with someone...someone who was very much like her, and shared similar values. Guards and Scouts had a great deal in common, just like Guards and Warriors did. All three were fairly dissimilar to Apothecaries, among other ranks.

In other words, Pingana talked sense, and Mel didn't. So she could have an intelligent conversation with him.

"Four, would you believe it?" she answered with a slight wince. She didn't quite feel up to four, and wondered how some of the other mothers in the pride were managing even more than that. "With any luck three of them will make it to adulthood," the lioness continued on a more serious note.

"Four is a good number," he commented thoughtfully, thinking about his own family and families he had seen about the pride. Perhaps it was rather large for a single mother, but it wasn't as big as some litters and it did present a better chance of getting some making it to adulthood.

"Not bad odds," he added thoughtfully, "And they should have plenty of playmates around now." It had gotten quiet busy around the pride since they really started bouncing back. It was a very good thing.

Sas nodded. It was difficult to go anywhere in the pride these days without running into a cub or adolescent. The only cubs to grow up without playmates were the incredibly anti-social, and there were a few of those in every pride.

"We can only hope they are so fortunate," she told the other lion. Then she forcefully changed the direction of conversation. "But what about you? Anything - or anyone - new on your life?" the lioness asked.

"Nothing to report," he responded shortly. His life was pretty consistent where it was, he ought to make more friends to keep things interesting but he was OK at a steady pace. The idea of 'anyone new' in his life was almost like a joke, though who knew how long he could put up with that.

"Keeping busy enough but it's pretty quiet around here lately," he said, though he was sure she'd have noticed, whether or not she was actively involved in guarding. It wasn't a bad thing that everything was so peaceful now.

The lioness snickered. Pingana had something of a reputation for not being involved with anyone, and showing no signs of wishing to change his bachelor status. It was a shame, especially since she knew several females in the pride who'd happily have a litter with him.

"So I'd heard," was the response she gave. "Though while things have been quiet overall, I'm still shocked by the population surge! You'd think that half the adults in the pride were going to go to the Goddess tomorrow!"

"You never know," he shrugged, his general pessimism showing, though it was a very matter-of-fact situation, especially for the Kitwana lions.

"Though I suppose now is not a bad time to start a family, really," Pingana considered. Peaceful times were best if you wanted to raise a family properly, it was when there were the least worries. Not to mention there wasn't much else for some to do. The pride had a pretty good rhythm for taking care of itself.

"Now, I shouldn't keep you," he said after a pause, "I'm sure you have better things to do than small talk with me."

"No, no it's not," Sas agreed. Starting a family hadn't been something she'd planned on too long ago, but she certainly couldn't argue that there were worse times to do so and this stretch of peace was a great asset for cubs. The lioness had her mouth open to protest that Pingana wasn't keeping her when a thin wail came out of her den.

"Duty calls," she replied with a smile. "Don't be a stranger," Sas told Pin as she turned on her heel and almost ran towards her children who were waking, noisily, from their nap.

Pingana's ears twitched at the sound coming from the nearby den and he smiled at Sas as she said her goodbye. He merely nodded in reply and watched her go off before turning himself back toward his own home and heading off once again. It was not a bad way to end a quiet shift.

Fin!
