He stared up at the golden lioness, blood red eyes gazing unblinkingly into hers, barely feeling her claws gripping his body. This was, he knew, that moment before definite death. And somehow, a strange sort of clarity seemed to envelop the world around him.

There would be no placing blame - he couldn't. Werevu was anything but a coward. They had fought and she had come out on top. That was the way the world worked, and it was something he had long since accepted. She had the right, he knew, to kill him. Because after all, the object of the vultures' desires was the little cub that would likely one day grow up to rule the pride.

There was no fear sparkling behind those almost transparent crimson eyes, nor judgement, nor hatred. There was no emotion lurking behind them, simply the stark, flat gaze of a bird faced with death, who knew it and had no regrets.

No, that wasn't true. He did have regrets. The only one being that, in the last moments of his life, he was not with his bonded. Much as both he and Msiba had attempted to deny it, they were bonded together, they had that special connection that Msiba had refused to have with anyone other than his sister. And in that last moment of the vulture king's life, he wished only that he could see the smooth-talking lion one last time. After all, the vulture had few loyalties to anyone on this world. Msiba was, perhaps, the only one.

Then suddenly, he felt the momentary sting of fangs, pain shot through his neck. And then it all began to fade. The vulture's head lolled back, and even as his eyes began to glass over, he saw the blue of the sky, the white clouds, the sun. And he felt freedom, waiting for him.

The vultures shuffled against one another, a deathly silence had fallen over them. Their king was dead. Wearied wings flapped against the sky, disheartened cackles. For a moment, they simply stared. And then slowly, one by one, the vultures began drifting from the collected flock. Going one way, then another. Until finally, the skies had cleared of the scavengers, the first time since that earthquake, so many days ago.

((Yup. Maybe a last reacting post from everyone and I'll stick the FIN in the title? x3))

Had the vultures...stopped? Ufunuo had paused in his steps, suddenly realizing that the talons had left his back, that the darkness had cleared, the beasts retreated. His gazed turned to his sister and then to Daga as the eagle settled at his side with a victorious nod. The cub sighed in relief, they were okay, and the vultures had gone though he did not understand why.

Looking to his aunt, he gave a small smile, too exhausted to speak his thanks. Eyes drifting to the still vulture at her paws, he noticed the difference between it and the others, but unlike Ficha he did not understand the significance. But did it really matter? The attack had ended, they had survived, and now they were safe.

A gentle nudge to his sister, Ufunuo stepped the lioness' side, to the aunt he had thought lost. He could not help but question why he was seeing her now, nor could he ignore the sudden pit in his stomach as he wondered about the fate of his mother. Though it had not been said, somehow he knew, he could feel that she was gone.

But he was too tired for questions, his ears not ready to hear the truth he already knew. For now he just wanted to go home to his pride. Maybe there he would find his father and they could be together again.

Home, that sounded good.

(( final post for Ufunuo I think ))

Ajili breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of the vultures flying away. They had done it...Well, mostly the cream-colored lioness. But they really had all done something. It was fulfilling to know she helped save those two cubs at least in some small way. Her leaving Ingi and Dumu in that small cave was justified and she didn't feel so guilty for leaving them anymore.

Ah, Ingi and Dumu...She needed to hurry back and get them.

"Thank you for your help." Ajili said to the other lioness. "I don't know what would've happened if you hadn't come." She smiled but winced inwardly at the other lioness's wounds. She'd fought so hard and long with such gashes in her body and had gained several more from that fight with the great flock of vultures. Ajili had even earned herself a few scars. But it was over, she told herself. It was all over now. Everyone was safe.

The wounds on her back began to ache and her relieved expression changed to a grimace. But no, the pain wasn't important. She had lived to see another day; another day without her mate.

But it was another day with Ingi.

Ficha pulled away from the vulture with a grimace of distaste contorting her maw. The taste of blood filled her mouth and though she knew that nothing was truly wrong with him, it tasted contaminated, wrong. She was not one to relish in the blood of her enemies or one to even enjoy the taste of it on her maw. She licked away at it, swallowing it down and trying to get rid of it as best she could. Her eyes flickered up towards the sky as the vultures began to disperse and she couldn't help the small sigh of relief that she felt as she realized her assumptions had been right. They were leaving and that was all that mattered now.

She spared little attention for the dead bird at her feet, wishing not to relish in her victory, but instead turning her attention towards her nephew as he came to her side. She leaned down to nuzzle his head lightly, though it stretched and pulled at her aching wounds to do so. She would need to rest soon, but she knew that they needed to find the rest of the pride first. Standing up straight once more, she let her eyes find the bright lioness that she didn't know. "They were threatening my niece and nephew," she said, her voice hoarse from roaring, growling, and exertion, "there's no need to thank me." She wasn't trying to be impolite, simply letting the lioness know that there was no reason to give her thanks for this - it was her duty to save the little ones, especially now that their mother couldn't.

This wasn't how she wanted them to find out and now that they were seeing her, she knew that they would have questions. After all, it was she who had been rumored to be dead and Nyonda alive instead. There was nothing to be done about the circumstances, but the questions could be left for later. "We need to get going," she said finally, forcing her weary body to move, "we need to find the rest of the pride." Some sense told her that if the vultures were here trying so hard to get one of the cubs, for whatever reason, then there must be other things going on elsewhere.

What a day she picked to come out of hiding.

Ubele stared at the sky, ready to attack. But then, it all stopped. One by one, the birds seemed to stop their force and fly away. The air was quiet once more and the feeling in the air was oddly somber. She watched the dark forms retreat into the distance, unsure if she was ready to believe that they would give up so quickly. But they did not turn back. Ubele stared at the sky long after they were gone.

She was brought back to attention by a nudge to the side. She looked over to see her brother, Ufunuo. He was injured, but safe. She smiled her brightest smile for him, hoping that it might help. Then they took their place next to their aunt. Ubele was certain that Ficha had been lost to them. But she had come to their rescue.

Gazing wordlessly at her brother, Ubele understood that their mother was not coming back. Her grief was overwhelming, but tolerable, as if she had already known the fact. She hadn't wanted to give up hope, but it was now time to accept it. At least she still had her aunt. And Ufunuo, her brother. Somewhere, she still had her father too. She was sure of it. And out of the rubble, and the chaos, the pain, the worry, and the fear, she still had her home.

Ficha could not find it in her to spare words of kindness for the moment; they were safe, but only for now. She waited just a breath to allow everyone to gather themselves, then turned and began to lead them back to the rest of the pride. The sinking feeling in her gut was growing with every single step but she still had to make sure they were all safe. For now.
