Prompt 2: Exit Post
When the black owlcat fell, Bitter End released a sigh - or hiss, really - of resignation and vehemence. Of course - why wouldn't she be wrong? Nothing ever went right. She looked up at the hungry crowd then, knowing her time was coming to an end, and could not bring herself to muster up much effort to run from the inevitable. She fell, hard. She fought the tide of kin, just because she was mad. Then she took a hoof to the head while a thigh was being rent from her body - and woke with a start. At least, she thought, annoyed but grim, she was right that it could only end with her being knocked out.

Prompt 3: The Garden

The part of Sleepless that was Sleepless was marvelling at the miracle of talking flowers, yearning dearly to, uh, carefully, of course, extract some specimens to study in depth. But that part was deep within - somehow she wasn't quite herself, not here. Perhaps it that strange, sudden brush with death - though already the escape was fading from her clearest thoughts, like a dissipating mist - but there felt a certain solemnity about the proceedings, and she merely asked directions with a simple 'please'.

Even as the violets babbled, she looked back at the proud Lily, the pale, crowned doe still in her mind. Across the river it would be.

Prompt 3:

He'd been wrong. The black owlcat hadn't won, and for his bad guess or bad bet or just because it was meant to be, Things Unheard had to run for his life.

He didn't lead the pack of those who fled, but he didn't lag behind, either, thankfully. He was close enough to the rear to hear the pursuers fall on those who were slower than he was and that, no doubt, put some wind beneath his hooves, driving him just a little bit faster so he'd stay out of their grasp.

And now? Now the flowers were speaking to him. Oh, this would be a tale to tell his father, for certain. It all meant something. Had to, didn't it? It was a journey of some sort. Meant to be a journey, and to him, the valley was more of a symbol for the journey than the river. Besides, he rather liked the sound of the giggling blooms. He nodded toward the violet and headed toward the valley she indicated.

Murkcrow edged his way out before anyone could note his own bet, making for the apparent calm of a flower garden not far away. The crowds melted away and he found himself in a riot of color and smells.

He thought, maybe, he'd like to stop a minute, collect his wits. Nothing too long, or the Swamp would surely force him forward again, but perhaps a short break would escape its notice. Carefully Murkcrow made for the nearest bed of soft flowers - there was something unsettling about this garden - until he heard "Watch where you put that foot!"

Looking around for the source of the voice revealed only flowers, so he tried again, to the same result. "Is that you talking?" he asked the lilies at his feet.

"Yes, yes it is!" they responded in chorus.

"Well," Murkcrow sighed, "I suppose you're here to tell me where to go next."

"Across the river!" said the lilies, and "through the valley!" said the violets.

Murkcrow groaned. Rivers were always full of peril, but he didn't imagine the valley to be particularly safe either. Well, at least he would be dry...or the whole place would flood and he'd be waterlogged anyway. Murkcrow followed the path indicated by the violets down into the valley.

When the flower spoke, he jumped and stared down at it, and then he lowers his head to examine the poor Lily he'd almost stepped upon. "I am... most sorry for my error, fair Flower Maiden." He finally said, his eyes wide with curiosity. "I am lost, and very confused, about this place I have ended up in. I do not wish to harm any, and I am not sure where I must go. Would you tell me?"

When he had heard the conflicting directions from the Flowers, he carefully turned so that he could study his options. He couldn't find a place where the two met, sadly, or he'd have tried to do that. After a long moment, he spoke up and said "Thank you, my fine floral Ladies. I appreciate your assistance." and moved to cross the River.

As the fight progressed in a clamor of hisses and yowls, Watch felt himself drawn further and further out of himself. Near the climax, it was no longer him watching as the two bleeding owlcats fought to the death, but him watching himself. He watched in horror as the self below roared and cheered, stomping his hooves and shaking his mane like a buck half his age. Disgust turned his mouth bitter as he watched the white owlcat tear the life out of the black. Beneath him, the crowd erupted, some with victory, others with dismay. And quickly, so quickly he had no time to react, dismay became terror as the winners came down upon the losers, forcing them to share the fate of their lost charge. Tears fell down his cheeks as he watch his own hooves come down with sickening thumps on the bodies of strangers. Blinking them away, Watch fled the scene as fast as he could, running until he could see clearly once more.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Vast open color was the first thing he took in as he entered the next scene of the dream. It was a garden, well lit and sunny, humming with voices. Curiously, he looked around, the fight almost forgotten now, and saw no kin. Where were the voices coming from, he wondered?

"Watch where you put that foot!" Exclaims a lily that he was near to stepping on. Not too far away, the violets let out a high-pitched giggle, and with that Watch realized that all the flowers are talking.

Dream logic dictated that, if they could talk, that meant he could ask them questions. And so he did.

"Excuse me, where do I go next? I seem to have wandered off."

"Across the river," said the Lily, and her tone implies his ignorance was an annoyance. She tipped her head to point in that direction.

"Through the valley," argued one Violet, and her sisters all agreed, talking over each other and babbling in excitement.

Watch stood, looking from flower to flower, wondering who to choose, and came to the decision that the river was the best course of action. After all, that was were he felt most comfortable, right?

Cockerel had absolutely no idea what was going on, but the Violets seemed to make more sense to him. They were adorable.

This was the strangest thing that had ever happened to him.

On the plus side, unlike the last area, he doubted a bunch of flowers would rip him apart for choosing the wrong one.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Chased out of the betting ring with her hide barely intact was not exactly how Maple had anticipated that event playing out, and she was glad she'd managed to outrun and trip up enough of the kin escaping behind her to distract her assailants. Usually her charm and the social impetus to respect the elderly kept Maple very safe indeed, and this violent encounter was all the more surreal and troubling to her because of its unlikelihood in her waking life... Or what she had always assumed was the unlikelihood of such a situation. Certainly there'd been scraps aplenty when she was younger, but she'd listened to her body when it started telling her she was getting too old for that sort of thing. Now that she'd left the bloodthirsty pack behind, Maple was plodding along at a far more comfortable speed, counting all the situations in recent memory where she may have been dancing a fine line between safety and harm, and coming up with a larger number than she'd thought she would.

That was very troubling indeed.

Maple was so caught up in stewing over her troubles that, not only did she not notice or especially care about the change in her surroundings at all, but it took almost crushing at least three irises before she noticed the shrieks of protest coming from around her feet. She stopped suddenly as the latest protest finally sunk in, and looked around for the source of the voices, but could see only flowers - and then one of the lilies bobbed emotively, entirely independent of the lack of wind in the clearing, as the next phrase was spat out - a sulky "
Watch where you put that foot!" A bed of violets nearby giggled.

Maple stood completely still as it really sunk in that the goddamned flowers were talking to her. She slowly closed her eye, took a deep breath, and tried not to scream her frustrations to the apparently sentient garden and hopefully still unintelligent sky. When she opened it again, she gingerly turned to the flowers behind her to apologize - "I am awfully sorry. Having only the one eye, and being so lost in thought, I'd hardly thought to watch my step. I do hope you all can forgive me," she finished, looking down to the lilies with a very convincing air of regret.

"
Live and let live, I suppose," the Lily sighed, and Maple had the feeling that if it had them, it would be rolling its eyes.

"I am awfully embarrassed to ask," Maple went on - and she honestly was embarrassed to be asking flowers for help, but obviously nothing was going to make even the slightest lick of sense in this dream - "but perhaps you could help me with these problems I've been worrying over? I seem to be stuck in a bit of a mystery, and have been told that the answer lies -"

"
Across the marsh," the Lily interrupted, sending the violets into another reel of giggles. "We know."

"Yes." Of course they did. "Would you happen to know the best way to proceed? I'm afraid I'm quite lost." In more ways than one, she griped to herself.

"
Across the river," the Lily said with sullen disdain.

"
Through the valley," one of the Violets volunteered, and the others babbled in agreement.

The two camps began to argue, and Maple started weighing her options. The Lily was an insufferable b***h, and probably had some lingering grudge, if the previous encounter was any fair metric to judge this dream by. The Violets, however, seemed like a bunch of giddy, air-headed idiots, and anyways they were all flowers, so what would they know about the world beyond what they could - their limited scope of perception, anyways?

Ultimately, Maple decided to listen to the Violets - she hadn't accidentally almost crushed them, so they probably didn't mean her any harm, and didn't seem clever enough to lie very convincingly, anyways. Maple thanked them all, even though the Lily griped about her choice, then turned and set off to see what other life-threatening weirdness this dream had in store.

PROMPT 3 RESOLUTION

The river, it turns out, is a beast: not a simple meandering stream of water but, instead, a fury that catches at legs, deep enough at the middle that it's impossible to walk across, with a current that drags kin under and leaves them breathless. It's not impossible to cross, but it is difficult. It takes a strong swimmer, or a healthy dose of luck.

Unfortunately, six kin don't have that luck. As they're swept away toward a hundred-foot plummet onto ragged rocks, they realize they should have gone through the valley.

_________

THE FOLLOWING SIX PARTICIPANTS HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED:

Prompt 4: The Gnat's Guidance

Eventually, you all find your way through the valley and onto dry land again, catching your fight and preparing for the next leg of your journey -- not that you know where to go, of course.

A guide comes in the form of a gnat, lazily circling to settle in your ear so that its tiny voice can be heard.

"There is a grove," it tells you, and you have to suppress the urge to giggle at its itty-bitty, high-pitched voice. "There you will find your path. Eventually."

And like this, settled in your ear, evading any attempts you make [voluntary or not] to swat it away. Through the valley, past some towering trees that you want to explore further but are instructed not to, and into a quiet, peaceful sort of grove where the light is filtered through fine branches, and where you immediately forget your name.

You remember that you're on a quest, that's for sure, but you don't know who you are or how you got here, and you certainly don't know which way you need to go. You meander slowly around the grove, and find you can't figure out how to get out. The circle of trees seems impenetrable. Or maybe it's just a trick of the light.

Eventually, you turn around to find a slight, confused-looking Acha behind you. She, too, has forgotten her name: stands staring at you and frowning.

"Do I know you?" she asks, and you certainly don't know the answer.

"We have to get out of here," she adds, after a moment, and with that you agree.

"Want to work together?" you think, maybe, there's something sly behind her tone of voice.

And here you must make a choice. Do you try to get out of the grove alone, or do you accept the acha's offer and team up to find your escape?

_________

OOC INFO:

This an elimination prompt! You must reply to the prompt above in whatever way you'd like., but you must, somewhere in your post, specify if you're trying to escape the grove alone or with the acha. PLEASE BOLD YOUR CHOICE.

When you post, please also roll a 20-sided die. In past events, this die has been used to put some members back into the running, even if they choose the wrong fork, so it is to your benefit to do so!

You have until January 4th at 11:59 PM EST to complete this prompt and join in the event [but, realistically, I'll probably accept entries until around noon on the next day. XP].

Click to show.Panting heavily with exertion after struggling his way through the vicious river, cursing both the lily and his own bad choice softly under his breath, Dances-With-Doves glares at a rather large insect that comes circling in out of nowhere. He leaps up angrily, trying to kick it away lest it try to bite him... but misses, and ends up unceremoniously on the ground, with the gnat in his ear, chittering at him.

Getting slowly to his feet, his muscles protesting slightly, he makes his way to the grove the gnat has described. The soft leaves envelope him, the light through the branches entrancing him, and he forgets his pain, dancing lightly on his hooves to tap out a silly pattern on the flecks of sunlight on the ground. Caught up with this activity, watching the beautiful salmon-colored fur draped over those handsome black hooves, the buck is fascinated. He suddenly remembers he's on an important quest, but has no idea where he should go, or what to do. He tries, unsuccessfully, to find a way out of the grove, still prancing lightly about as he does so. His efforts are soon interrupted by a polite cough, and he turns to find a small, female Acha behind him, just as lost as he is.

When she invites him to work together, he does not reply right away; some part of his mind twinges faintly, picking up a hint of slyness in the female's voice. After a long moment of thought, he nods his head at her. Though he has no idea who exactly he is, the one thing he does know is that he doesn't have it in him to leave a small female alone in a disorienting place like this.
