It was a labor of love. It started off as just a normal sweater, or maybe if you were hard core, just a heap of yarn and fabric. But the point was, you turned it from something boring and every day, into something extraordinary. It was crafted with extreme attention to detail. In your eyes.... it was perfect. They would love it, you were sure of it. Whether or not that was apparently to those looking at it was a different matter.

The gift giving season was upon you. You didn't procrastinate this year, or maybe you weren't even thinking of Christmas gifts when you found it... but the important part was you had found IT. There it was, in an unlikely place, but calling you like a beacon. It made you think of them, how could it NOT? You had to have it. They needed to have it.

With his head still swimming with thoughts too dark for the holidays, and eager to drag himself out of the place those thoughts had taken him too, he desperately needed another stupidly cheerful sweater to tide him over - and this was the one that caught his eye before he had any ******** idea who it was even destined for. But it was certainly destined for greatness. Not quite as amazing as the Christmas Story sweater because, seriously, come on, there was no matching that s**t, but still pretty ******** amazing.

Hollow cat eyes, rounded out by chubby cat faces and highlighted by chubby cat eye lasers, fluorescent green against the pitch black of the yarn, and the glow of the presents as they set them aglow, not knowing in all their cheerful cat-like glee what they were doing - or maybe they knew exactly what they were doing… oh my god… it was basically quasi kid sized, but that didn’t ******** matter. All he knew was he needed this sweater and the rest of the puzzle pieces would fall into place in time.

That ended up being the last sweater that he picked up, and for days, it would go without a home. Like a stray kitten - a stray laser shooting kitten incinerating Christmas joy. It was hilarious, gaudy, and stupid, and he loved it. It needed to go to somebody who needed a spot of joy in their lives that might not even know that they needed it. It needed to go to somebody really special, someone meaningful, someone who would really -

It was after the brawl that he knew where it belonged: obviously, Zach needed it. Gev could also use something, but he was all dogs, not cats, so he’d have to go on another hunt to find a fitting gift for him, but - Zach. Zach would totally get it, and the more he thought about it, the more perfect it seemed. Zach was always into tech. Video games and s**t. This was all tech and s**t, well, lasers and fire. That was close enough, right? He probably liked cats. No, he definitely had to love cats, he seemed like somebody that would love cats.

So Hitch meticulously wrapped it up like all the rest, in crude, messy, crumply paper that should have been shiny and neat looking, but it wasn’t really because it was all covered with creases and he was honestly total s**t at wrapping presents. But these were all really personal presents deep from the heart and honestly, most of them were really stupid and all, but when he was done Hitch kind of leaned back and took in the sight of them, his brow creasing when he realized how many there actually were.

Just. How? - with the last year being what it was, even with all the s**t he was going through, that was more presents than he’d ever had to wrap before. Ever.

“Huh.”

His and Rhys’ first tree. Their first Christmas in their shared home.

He kind of smiled, and for the first time in awhile, he felt like he could breathe. Like maybe it'd actually be okay. Somehow. Maybe.

There it was, in an unlikely place, but calling you like a beacon. It made you think of them, how could it NOT? You had to have it. They needed to have it.

After what felt like hours, Queenie's shopping adventure was coming to a close. She'd spent the entire weekend (and by entire weekend, it was really midday Sunday into the evening) hunting down all of the presents she'd need to work on wrapping in the week to come. With any luck, the presents would be nestled under the tree for at least a good week and a half before it was time to wake up and open them. Already, half a dozen were under the tree back at home with her name attached - her mother, bless her soul, was always the most prompt when it came to purchasing and wrapping gifts. Queenie was envious of the woman's ability to manage her time, especially when she herself was struggling to juggle work with school with trying to continue doing the fun things she liked, like painting or baking.

Or, of course, shopping.

Bags were growing heavier at her side but she wasn't deterred from the weight. If anything, shopping had been the responsible party for making sure she was strong --- toting bags around a mall or dishes during an catering affair paid off when it came to her needing to lug around twenty or so pounds of Christmas presents from one store to another.

Heading back to her car, Queenie was forced to travel through one of her favorite department stores to get to the exit -- near the shoe section, of course. She preferred parking in the store's parking lot as opposed to the general mall entrances; it was a pleasant excuse to stroll through her favorite aisles, even if she knew she wasn't supposed to be buying herself anything during this time of giving.

Kitchen supplies were ignored as bags swished from side to side, hands swaying slightly at her sides. The children's clothing section was ignored, as were the ties and slacks. Queenie did have to ponder for a minute or two how nice it would be to finally be able to purchase ties and cuff links for a handsome, dreadfully rich boyfriend. Doting him with small little presents here and there while he spoiled her absolutely rotten with all of the shoes and blouses and jewelry she could ever ask for.

It would be such a lovely Christmas gift if she managed to find Mr. Rich & Right.

Heels traveled onward, moving into the sweaters and outer wear section. Queenie already had a decently sized coat so she wasn't too fussed about browsing when it came t---oh.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw an eye-catching sweater on one of the front racks. It was pretty in its own right but nothing that Queenie herself would be caught wearing. But it was so nice.... but it would be shoved in the depths of the closet otherwise.

Was there someone else she could inflict it upon, then, who might wear it instead of herself?

Setting her bags down, her phone was drawn out and she started scrolling through her contact list. She'd already gotten stuff for her parents... stuff for Ms. Ellis... stuff for....ah - there was an option!

Phedre! That girl who saved her!!!

Delighted with the idea (because this way she could make sure the sweater found a good home without having to actually wear it), Queenie decided it would prove to be at the very least, a satisfactory thank you gift for saving her from the creepy clown almost two months before.

Punching in a text message request to the girl for her mailing address, Queenie plucked the top from the rack and made her way, bags now in hand again, to the closest cash register.
