The gift giving season was upon you. You didn't procrastinate this year, or maybe you weren't even thinking of Christmas gifts when you found it... but the important part was you had found IT. There it was, in an unlikely place, but calling you like a beacon. It made you think of them, how could it NOT? You had to have it. They needed to have it.

Hitch hadn’t planned anything nefarious when he’d gone out, honestly. He had some disposal income for one of the first times probably… ever, and it wasn’t a lot, exactly, but it was enough and gave a lot more leeway than he was used to.

Rhys’ big presents were already squared away and all that, but when he sat down and thought about it, ********, there were actually a lot of ******** people to consider that year? A brother in law, a brother in law’s girlfriend, a cousin, an old friend, a new friend, just - okay to Fritz wasn’t exactly a NEW new addition, but even so, the list was way ******** longer than it had been literally ever.

Jarias was easy. Some novelty shot glasses and good quality booze. Literally the easiest person to shop. But for everyone else…

Then, a wrong turn left him wandering into a row of racks, caged in on either side by bright, obnoxious fabric: sweaters. Giant, lumpy, annoyingly vibrant, sometimes flashing and basically always sparkling, *sweaters*. Hitch kind of felt like he must have taken a wrong turn somewhere and taken a tumble into an unfortunately knitted hell, and he stood there blankly for a minute or two, his eye glazing over as he just took it all in.

Slowly, though, a smile began to take hold, a low laugh bubbling in his throat that made a couple of people do a double take (some lingering because he was rocking the eyepatch about as well as anyone could). Perfect. Yes. He rubbed his palms together, and then it was time to get down to it.

Fritz was really the primary goal as he first shifted through the sweaters, although one did happen to catch his eye for a certain other red headed former St. James - and when he saw it, even though by all accounts he already had Rhys covered, he just couldn’t resist grabbing it for his husband. There was a pun. It was mildly dirty. It would definitely make him turn a few fun shades of red, and after some long, hard s**t they’d been going through lately, well, yeah - hopefully he’d actually laugh a little and they could actually ******** relax and be ******** -normal- for awhile. No drama, no misery, nothing but them enjoying the moment and just laughing with each other.

Everything was mixing him up, and Rhys too, and - yeah. It’d be nice to get him all flustered like he used to, wouldn’t it?

At least, Hitch hoped so. If they couldn’t get back to normal, then that… could they get back to normal? With everything still going on… Not the ********’ time or place to freak out, dumbass. Just get the stupid sweater. Still gotta get Fritz. The harsh self-reprimand was about as helpful as always, but that didn’t stop him from trying to get back to it. There were still a lot of sweaters to shift through and all. Holiday fun and cheer for all!

It turned out that after a few more minutes of shifting, the literal perfect sweater he could have imagined for Fritz ever all but fell into his lap, and any and all darker thoughts almost immediately scattered when he realized the goddamn thing actually ******** actually lit up. And the best thing was, not that it came up a whole lot, but Hitch actually ******** loved A Christmas Story. Some of his best memories were catching it on TV or whipping out their old, worn VHS around the holidays, him and his mom, laughing it up with -

You’ll shoot your eye out.

“Oh, “ Hitch remarked out loud, reaching up and lightly running his fingertips over the eyepatch - and for once, instead of feeling heavy over it, he actually laughed. “Well if that ain’t ********’ ironic, “ he murmured, shaking his head and snickering again. Anyway, it had everything from the lights to the goddamn leg lamp, like - come on. He’d be an idiot not to buy this. Fritz should honestly thank him, it was a ******** investment. What a find. Literally the best brother in law that anyone had ever had.

(Cordelia, by the way, was totally exempt from this. She was getting a present, but Hitch had only met her once and mentally deemed her way too classy for a lame a** sweater. She probably wore like those fancy a** girl dresses with transparent skirts and ******** turtle doves came to her to roost or carry ribbons for her or some other classy s**t. - what did classy people actually do, anyway? Did he actually know classy people? Well, okay, Rhys and Fritz were arguably fancy, but that was like… English fancy. Totally different category.)

Then there was Harley, who yes, occurred to him because hey, what better says ‘apparently you’re my cousin an’ I’m ********’ mixed up an’ I don’t really ********’ know you too well so here’s some festive s**t you can wear maybe Christmas mornin’ an’ never again until next December happy holidays!’ Yup, ugly a** Christmas sweater seemed about right for the occasion. Couldn’t think of anything better.

Of course it was kind of hard when he didn’t really know Harley all that well yet, but she seemed pretty… well, all the weirdness aside, it wasn’t like he didn’t see the resemblance at all or anything. Only she was like… better. Easy going and loud and fiesty with a comfortable, friendly energy that he totally would’ve loved if s**t wasn’t so weird. (Actually, come to think of it, she and Jarias would probably hit it off well. Note to self, arrange that s**t sometime. Or not. Would that be good or a disaster? On second thought, nope, avoid that at all costs.)

Dabbing Santa? - you know what? Considering, that seemed about ridiculous about to do the trick. Hopefully she thought it was hilarious instead of lame. Granted, like… he was her cousin. Wasn’t he supposed to be kind of lame? What did cousins actually like ******** do anyway?

From the moment she spotted the pop up boutique in the mall she had known that a number of people in her life would be receiving something incredibly special for the holiday season this year. Even if they weren't directly graced with the gift of her presence, Katrina Halloran wanted to make sure that they all had something unique to remind them each of her.

A sweater.

The boutique advertised a number of pre-made designs, each hanging on racks and rounders in a variety of sizes. Some of those would do for some of the people on her list-- the people whose tastes she wasn't entirely worried about offending with the vibrant shades of forest and pine alongside the eye searing crimson and bold reds. There were flashing lights and tinsel, jingle bells and glitter galore.

"No, no.... No.... Not this one. Hm...."

Metal hangers slid and clicked as they were shifted along the rack, teeth tugging at her lip as she pondered deep in thought. It was at that point that she was approached by a young woman, rosy cheeks and smile bright. "Miss, if you're not finding the perfect thing we do have a kiosk where you can design your own and we'll have it whipped and shipped by the end of the week-- should be here in time for the holiday!"

Now there was an idea.

Katrina let the young woman lead her over to the kiosk where she was provided with her choice of a few basic design templates. She tapped her way through them until coming to pause on a basic white blank with striped sleeves and a basic trim around the cuffs and collar. The woman that she had in mind was anything but basic, but this at least provided a start for making things fabulous.

The first thing to depart the design was the emerald green-- while she had no doubt that Prissy could wear emeralds just as well as she could diamonds given the right occasion, the colors clashed something awful on the sweater. She pondered, briefly, leaving the crimson in place, before deciding to scrap it all and start from scratch. Each color was picked with Priscilla Stratford in mind, shades shifted and adjusted until they complimented each other just so.

Only when she was content with the candy cane striping on the sleeves -- now in charming shades of charcoal, bubblegum and minty white -- did she move on to the rest of the sweater. She selected a vibrant shade of pink a bit closer to her own styles for the collar and cuffs, adding an oversized heart to the front.

Would Prissy wear this?

Probably....

Was it holiday enough?

Wrong holiday.

Katrina huffed, resizing the heart but still determined to leave it on the sweater. She selected a font out of those possible for stitching designs next, typing through an assortment of words until an idea slammed into her in the form of a song.

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen....

"V - I - X - E - N." One by one she said the letters allowed as she typed them with determination and a fair bit of satisfaction. That was one thing she had needed to finish the sweater off, but it was still missing something.

"Miss.... We do have some antler clip art available too, if you're not interested in putting a whole deer on there." The young woman spoke softly, hopeful that she was being helpful to the woman who'd been at the kiosk for nearly thirty minutes now if not longer.

"Oh? Yes, please.... If you wouldn't mind showing me, that would be perfect."

--------

She'd placed the order mid-November and by the tail end of the first week of December she received notice that it was in at the store. The sweater was, quite possibly, one of the most beautiful things she'd ever seen. Thoroughly satisfied, Katrina boxed it back up with care, wrapping it neatly in a layer of tissue paper before placing a pair of fluffy, pink and white slippers at the top of the box. She'd take it to get wrapped and then send it on its way, content in knowing at least one friend would be cuddly and warm this winter.

User Image It's oversized~~

The gift giving season was upon you. You didn't procrastinate this year, or maybe you weren't even thinking of Christmas gifts when you found it... but the important part was you had found IT. There it was, in an unlikely place, but calling you like a beacon. It made you think of them, how could it NOT? You had to have it. They needed to have it.

There was a pun staring him in the face, another low laugh rolling in his throat because it was just too ridiculous not to. Granted, a lot of sweaters had puns, all varying levels of stupid, but this one - Hitch hadn’t come across this one before, and as a lover of the s**t, when something clever rolled along, he was all there for it. He swept the silly lump of oversized blue fabric up into his hands and toyed with it, fidgeting with it this way and that. And admittedly, he already knew who it was for. Kind of. He just wasn’t sure if he wanted to acknowledge it, or if he wanted to go down that road at all.

It's nice to---meat---you! Spelled M-E-A-T...get it?"

He could hear her voice ringing in his head like it’d happened yesterday. It paid off not to have a s**t memory, generally speaking. When it came to Olga, though, it’d be kind of nice if the memories could blur around the edges a little. That way, maybe he could pretend he didn’t hear something - he didn’t want to say Still was cold because that wasn’t right. He wouldn’t call her cold. But the natural, unyielding, infectious warmth of Olga just wasn’t there anymore, like someone else was using her voice.

"I'd make a meat pun, but I'd probably butcher it."

It’d been their banter when they’d met, the flash of her stupid ******** little camera leaving a lingering spot at the edge of his vision. It’d spooled purple around her face as she’d grinned at him, no matter how irritable he’d been at the start - she’d cooed and called him cool - she’d said his hair was cool, and come to think of it, he’d said that too, hadn’t he? He’d said something nice about her hair, and she’d said something about how her mother had done it -

A mother who thought her daughter was dead.

A mother who wasn’t going to see her daughter for Christmas.

Another family broken by the negaverse, and suddenly his chest felt tight.

"Nah, you DELI-vered that pretty well!"

Hitch was clutching the sweater tighter in his grip than he realized. He eased it and sighed, staring down at it and idly wondering whether or not he should actually buy it. It was more something Olga would’ve liked, wasn’t it? - Still wasn’t a bad person, but she wasn’t the same person, and -

But how did he know? - how did he know Still still didn’t like puns? - and how did he know anyone else would even bother thinking of her around Christmas? Her mom didn’t have her anymore, her family didn’t have her anymore…

She didn’t have her family anymore, though, either. And she didn’t know she’d ever had one. She didn’t know a Christmas with a present from somebody who cared, the anticipation of a gift sitting under a tree. Even just one could make all the difference. That’s all he’d grown up with and all.

A silly pun laden sweater ended up being a lot heavier to hold than he thought, but Hitch kind of figured it was one of those burdens worth carrying.
