Barth weighed his options. He had the thorns, of course, which were...alright, when it came to restraining mostly-person-shaped and only mildly struggling combatants.

Calder and...well, what was apparently Zar, were a lot of...a lot of creature. And Barth, while tall, was sort of thin, and slow, and really not cut out for this sort of thing.

Zar nailed him with a look, and while he certainly appreciated Calder's defense on his behalf...

Barth slunk very slowly backwards towards a window.

Handsome had slipped out the door as Zar entered, which Barth should have taken closer notice of, but they were a tad past that point.

Calder was, if anything, fiercely territorial. He had a herd, and Barth was the core member of that herd. Zar was also park of that herd, and as far as hierarchy went, Zar and Calder struggled for the top. Calder still felt he was top stallion, and as such, those under him had to be disciplined. Calder also had to insure his primary mate was kept safe and secure. If one was going to go after him, challenge him in this way, Calder wanted to put a stop to it. He had wanted a fight, deep down, as such was the habit of young stallions bucking for power and to flaunt their powers to those they loved. If Zar wanted to spar, Calder would allow it. He was starting a fight in his territory after all, right in Barth’s (and in part Calder’s) home.

“You need to know that we do not fight on my territory.” He nipped the air again, stomping a hoof and then reared back when he was slashed at. Calder was a different monster to the demon. He didn’t subdue, he was designed to exhaust his prey, drag down struggling prey, and got a thrill over that fight before they drowned. He was designed to overpower.

He just didnt' want to hurt another mate of his. Zar wasn't right in the head right now. Something set him off, and he'd be hurt if they kept going. Head down, Calder rose up and threw his hooves out in hopes the act would cause Zar to step down.

Zar was torn between two potential prey targets. Calder was a serious threat but was also stationary and engaging him in battle. Barth was very slowly getting away and at the same time - through the eyes of sheer predator and want - seemed like the more favorable target.

He turned from Calder and in a hiss and leap, launched himself at the Sloth demon, though in the process completely ignored the table between him and the boil, crashing onto it in a crunch of splintered wood and scattered books. He struggled and wriggled across it, flailing with long claws for traction and scrabbling with hooves.

Even as he crashed to the floor, he reached out as far as he could with his tongue in an attempt to snag an ankle.

Barth wished fervently that the window was not so very, very far away.

Calder was, first and foremost, here to protect Barth. For Zar to completely ignore him and lunge at the sloth demon proved that Zar had lost his mind, and that meant he had to be taken care of before he hurt himself and hurt anyone else.

As Zar fell, Calder took this opportunity to turn about, and as the incubi got up, Calder leaned forward and threw his back hooves out to pummel the incubi. It would smart, but it was better than Zar eating Barth. He doubted the sloth demon would put up much of a fight and go down smooth if allowed.

"Stop this, Zar!!"

Calder's strike kept Zar firmly on the floor, the Incubus letting out another shriek of pain and defiance as he recoiled in pain. It was enough that he couldn't get any traction on Barth or on anything at all.

He scrabbled desperately to stand, desperate and denied at every turn.

Barth was not so fast, when it came to movement related things, and his escape was fairly slow. He had dodged the tongue, at least, and the thorns thickened at the window. And the floor.

They were clotting the whole room like dried blood, until it was difficult to see much of where Barth had gone, or if he was still in the room at all.

Calder was glad that even when Barth was slow, he had something to protect him while Calder was occupied. With Zar on the ground, Calder jumped over a couch and landed between Barth's mass of thorns and Zar, hoping to block any further advancement towards the demon.

Zar wasn't stopping and seemed set on devouring Barth at all cost. He wasn't sure how long they could keep this fight up without destroying someone and Barth's room was groaning in protect at the two massive beasts now fighting in it. He hoped the downstairs neighbors weren't going to get any sudden visits from above.

"Zar! Back - OFF!" He whinned and then threw his hooves out once more.

Once again Zar found himself struck, with a raging kelpie between him and his prize. He was still not coherent, a raging, bristling ball of sheer instinct. He hardly registered the pain, hardly registered anything as he let out another wild screech, this time of sheer frustration as he found himself thwarted at every turn.

"Whyyy" he rattled, long and drawn out as he struggled to comprehend why everyone and everything kept getting in his way. And though he dragged himself to his feet he did not attack.

Calder's ears went up when he heard Zar speak, but the fact he was asking why out of all things was not helpful. Why was he getting in the way? Why was he fighting him? Shouldn't that have been obvious?

Still, if he could speak, he could understand.

"Because you love Barth. You love me." At least he hoped. "You do not want to eat us, and you are fighting me for no reason."

With Zar not attacking, Calder decided to take his opportunity to keep him down. He couldn't have the incubi going after Barth again.

"I need you to listen to me, Zar. I need you to take a deep breath. I need you to focus on my voice. I need you to think of the demon you were. How it felt. I need you to go back to that Zar." He needed this fighting to stop.

Tail flicking behind him, he moved to the massive goat and then threw all his weight on top of the creature before biting down with sharp teeth into the back of his neck in hopes that he would submit and stay still.

Zar thrashed and let out another screech of frustration, tail lashing, tongue curling. But he heard, he heard and the only force that could overpower lust and hunger crept in and subdued his struggles - guilt.

What he'd wanted to do, what he'd tried to do crept in as his strength waned and he found himself scruffed and pinned by Calder.

The screech twisted up into a low throaty keen and he laid his head on the floor, staring at the twisted thorns, wide eyed and unfocused. Barth had gotten away, he'd been so close. And that should have been terrible, except it was not, he could only wish he'd been closer.

The keen finally ebbed, slowed and quietened until the only sound the Incubus made was breathing. "What iss thisss." he hissed. And yet he knew, he remembered the creature circling him in the dream, the feral destruction which always paced or was chained on the edge of his awareness.

He laid there, released his teeth from the nap of Zar's neck, and then rested his head against his neck and took a much needed breather.

What is this?

He was confused, and Calder was confused in return. The questions didn't match to someone who could talk and now seemed to be thinking a bit more clearly. That or Zar had a split personality that didn't share the same memory bank as the other.Whatever the case may be, it was up to Calder and Barth to figure out what was going on too. If Zar didn't know, Calder had to work out figuring exactly what was going on.

"Zar...is this....your first time changing into a natural form?" If not, then something had to have triggered him to be going straight into fighting and eating.

Zar was relieved when Calder released his scruff, though not for the expected reason, it had not been painful but perhaps the complete opposite, and right about then it was the last thing he really needed. He exhaled, gathering his wits just a bit, though not enough to completely rein in the instincts that coursed like white hot fire in his veins.

"Y.. yesss." he hissed. "It is. If that's even what this is."

When Zar continued to talk, if not with a hissing that reminded him of Barth when he was emotional, Calder leaned off his weight and shifted back to the white mare. He settled next to Zar and looked over at him with the closest extend to a smile a horse could give.

"Congrats! Shifting for the first time is a monumental occasion and a rite of passage. You just grew towards adulthood. Not...the most easy way to go about it." He glanced at the broken table before looking back. "...but hey, the first shift is always the hardest. It should be easier with each time now."

He bunted Zar lightly with his brow. "Do you need help changing back?"

Zar gave Calder a long suffering stare as he launched into a congratulation speech regarding his shifting. It reminded him of when he'd asked his mother about various alterations he'd experienced over his time at amity and just before, though she had been considerably less supportive than Calder. Anything that made her feel threatened she was particularly vindictive about.

"I don't know if it will be easssier." he said, still struggling not to hiss with this version of his tongue far longer than he was used to. "The only reassson I am not currently trying to erm. Do things to you. Is because I am exhausted." And it was true, he could feel his fear only just holding together on the edge of his awareness. "Next time might be jussst as bad."

His tail was - despite his assertions that he was once again harmless - still trying to slink around the mare.

"How are you proposssing to help?" he asked. Part of it was flirty, part of it was genuine - he really did have no idea how to shift back to his humanoid form.
