"You are right," she said gravely. Her eyes glowed again as she talked tot he tree. "He can hear you, sort of. I do not really understand it. He says he appreciates you." Hollandaise hummed for a second and then reached out to pull Chaya closer to the trunk. It was neither deftly nor gracefully done.

"This is the tree I nap most in. It is comfortable and I have not fallen out yet." Hollandaise reached up to scratch Chaya's ears.

It worked, sort of. But now that she had his full attention, she wasn't sure what to say. Her ears twitched. "H-hi. I did not mean to disrupt you." Hollandaise pulled a lock of her hair through the leaves on one shoulder and began to braid it. "Do you think you'll go to that dance?"

"There's food, and it was fun last time. I don't know a lot of dances though," Chaya said thoughtfully, and peeked sideways at Holly. "Do you think you'll go? I don't know what I'd wear. I guess I could have a dress still."

Chaya happily squeezed Holly back, yawning shamelessly, but his ears were pointed attentively at her as she explained the letter. "Oh! That's good, that's nice, right? Are you going to go?" he asked excitedly.

"Uh huh. My mouth is okay." Chaya opened his mouth to demonstrate, showing a set of gleaming white fangs. He poked one with his finger and said, "See? I even brush them."
