Why is there ash? Where am I? Wings Sleep looked at the paths, wondering why she couldn't find any paw prints. Something was off here, but she couldn't place her nose on it. Sighing, she stepped to the left for no other reason then to get out of the ash, that was causing her mouth to dry out faster. As she stepped along the path, she thought she seen her daughter, Day WIngs. That couldn't be though, they hadn't talked in so long and it was Day as a filly, not an adult. It couldn't, but still, Wings stepped closer.

"Mother, find me..." The voice was hollow and sad sounding. What was this? Wings Sleep rushed down to the cave mouth, her motherly instincts kicking in to save her child.

"Day Wings, wait!"

Shadowed Moon was grumbling, that stupid foal has wondered off, again! The dappled kin has left in the dead of night while he had been gone, and hadn't been back when he'd returned shortly after. So, here he was, looking for her. Despite how long he'd been walking, he hadn't caught any glimpse of her, though he could see a set of hoof prints in the fallen ash. He glanced up, squinting to avoid getting it in his eyes. She must have wandered far, though he imagined she would be scared by now. She didn't admit it, but she disliked strange places like this. Plus, the ash was making it rather dark, so he was having trouble seeing.

In fact, he was having so much trouble seeing he almost walked into a tree. It was about this point he realized there were two paths, one simply continues outwards, under the falling ash. He was almost tempted to take this path, as it promised a simple walk, but he luminescent cave was likely to have attracted the young doe he was looking for. Sunlit Rock disliked the empty landscape, she claimed it boring, but once again he was sure she was scared of the idea of being so alone. The cave would promise light, and fun, so she was sure to have tromped into the mushrooms. He sighed. "Guess I don't have much choice." The buck mumbled before heading to the left, hoping the doe hadn't gotten herself lost in the likely winding passages.

User ImageNight awoke. Yet not awake.

He found himself in the middle of a trail. Glancing around, there wasn't much to be seen due to ash falling like snow. He'd never seen snow, but he'd heard about it. He was sure this was what it would look like.

There was a reason for him to be here. Night felt that he had a purpose and that he must follow it through. But which way to go on this trail, he wondered. Glancing one way and then the other, he noticed a fork in the trail at one end. Slowly walking to where the path split, he again tried to see past the falling ash.

To the left, he could make out the dark opening of a cave entrance. There seem to be a faint glow inside. Probably those glowy mushrooms, he thought. Chuckling to himself, he remembered how his Beloved used to warn him about eating too many mushrooms.

His Beloved. That was his purpose here. Only in a dream would he be able to see her again. Whether Night was here to help her or not, he needed to find her before he woke to the real world again.

Night glanced back to the cave. His Beloved never cared much for caves. If she was waiting for him, it wouldn't be in there. Looking to the right, the path was barely discernible under the layers of ash. Without another thought, he strode
towards the right, taking the silent trail.

The voice brushes against his consciousness but it is the ash that wakes him -- warm and gray, a thick insulating fur that he does not need. Sunlit eyes open.

He shakes to unseat the embers and then attempts to take in his surroundings. The falling ash makes it hard to see although to his left he can make out the dark silhouette of cave -- a mouth of glowing specks that reminds him of bugs... A long shutter cascades down his spine and he scrambles to his feet.

Help me.

Louder this time, his ears twitch and he turns. There is no shelter to the right. What to do?

Help me.

Urgency and insistence tinge the plea in such a way that he recognized it now. It is his own voice. Scared. Fearful. He bristles and let's his instincts carry him.

His gait is decisive and his eyes hard as he turns to the right with every intent to help this voice -- his own voice.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.It was the smell of blood that woke her up, except that she wasn’t awake. The air was thick with heat and it sunk into her skin like blood returning to the deep, dark crevices of her soul. It clung to her and as she tried to walk forward, it felt like the air was pulling her limbs back. She was struck by a sense of deep sorrow and it coated this empty space that lived in the hollow of her chest. This was a dream, and yet she was compelled to react as it were reality.

The hollow in her chest was shaped like a filly, curled up with her eyes open, gazing with a blank, comforting openness at the world, so unaffected it nearly hurt except that she couldn’t.

Last Night blinked away the ashes that fell from the blackening sky, but didn’t bother trying to shake the ash that coated her sides like feathers on birds. It is hard to see with the ash all around her, stark and cold against, the warm blood that was soaking the very essence of the sky. Her eyes were like ash, tinted and uncaring, almost cold except for the impossible gentleness of her gaze. She looked onward, first to the right with the field of ashes, and then to the left where the glow in the darkness looked like poison.

She was looking for herself, missing from deep within, young but unchanged. So she turned to the left, pulling her limbs through the bloody night air, going deep because that was where the self resided.

Strangely, I Walked Across did not remember how she had gotten here, and she was struggling to recall where exactly 'here' was, too. Ash fell from somewhere like flurries of snow, or a prank carried out by some mongoose: that much ash could never get that high on its own. (Except, she thought, perhaps in the wake of disaster - but she had not heard tell of any recent disasters.) Through the ash, sky: a bleak blue-grey free of those familiar white puffs of cloud, but a strange haze filled it. It smelled like acid, something strange and wrong, like an ugly perfume. But of course there were no flowers here.

It was a pity, Path thought, that she could not see by the light of her own eyes, or the faint glow of her antlers - dim, here, in the ash. Because there was someone who needed help: ah, yes, that was how she'd found her way here. She'd answered a call, of sorts, from a delicate-boned filly, and she'd seen - was it Riverrun or What Comes After? Why couldn't she remember? Her darlings...

The ash beneath her hooves separated into fine white dust as she stepped, and there was a path, carved perhaps by other kin who'd had daughters to save. Here it was white, and there: there, the dark lip of a cave that contained some faint glow. Like her girls', perhaps, or like a mushroom's...it would be easier, Path thought, to see a kimeti's eyes glowing on the path above, because there would be no conflicting signals. And yet the ash's white was near indistinguishable from the glow of her own antlers, and the cave's darkness was so, so lovely...

She veered off, sharply, to the left.

And so the swamp was covered in ashes again, much like the time of the great fire. Except there was silence for that one sole voice. It tugged at him and because he was in the business of helping others, he followed. The voice increased in familiarity and with each step in the grey soft rain, the image of her solidified in his mind- Baleful Glare. He was the sister to Fortune and himself, his twin to River-Swollen. Long ago did she forge her own path in the swamp much likes others, but time forgot her. She moved as if she were in a bygone era, and now her voice mimicked the same ancient quality.

Eventually the game of follow-along reached a turning point in the form of a fork in the road. The dullness of the falling ash muted his landscape, and in turn it offered no helpful feedback. He craned his neck, closing his eyes, focusing his senses. His intuition was oddly quiet, or perhaps it was still asleep.

Finally, he made his choice. Because wherever there were those mushrooms, it meant the Mare would be near. And for that reason he chose the right path.

Ghouls heard the softest flutter of a noise, a sound that set his heart alight like the moths he so cared for. A dreamlike sound, but he instantly recognized it. It was the spirit that was Bone Kisser, before she became a moth. He had always believed in his heart that lost souls become reborn as moths... and now that soul was crying to him, desperate for help. This was not his dream, but surely it was the dream of his moth...

Ghouls... please, help me Ghouls.... Her voice sounded young, like that of a filly. A young child's voice... was Bone Kisser truly the soul of a child?

Ash obscured his vision as he tried to find the source of the cries. A strange occurrence, unlike anything he'd ever seen before. Despite this, he could see a fork in the path, one toward a meadow of sorts, another to a cave with bioluminescence glowing gently. Determined, he turned to the left, heading into the mouth of the cave. He had a spiritual duty to his young friend, and would save her soul at any cost.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Burning Bush could feel her son's presence in the area. It wasn't like him to stray so near to Westfen lands (for that is what the dream appeared to be). He hadn't liked the clan as a child. They saw his gifts and wanted to make him a seer and her son, her darling son, had wanted anything but that. So she did what was right, she let him go. Perhaps she shouldn't have. Perhaps she should have kept him caged here where she could watch over him but... She had never been that person.

Still, if he was nearby, he was looking for her. His pride was too great to come directly to his old mother, so Burning Bush set out to find him. That's what mothers do, baby their sons. Ash falls like rain around her and she takes the right path. Forward unto the darkness.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Accuse stepped tenuously over piles of ash. The world was silent; it reminded him of winters he'd never known- but that was unimportant now. He had to clear his head; he had to find her. A child had gone missing, and he was going to find her.

And he had absolutely no idea why. Altruism typically wasn't in his nature. Finding a child to ensure she stayed lost in order to dangle his knowledge over her weeping mother? That he might do. But there was something burning in him to rescue this wayward filly, and try as he might, he couldn't fight it.

He took the left path. Caves were far too often the wrong kind of darkness.

Of the 21 who awoke to share the same dream, eleven of them head to the left -- down the slope and into a cave full of finely glowing mushrooms. As they get nearer to these strange growths, the smell is overwhelming, something sweet and salty at the same time, hopelessly tempting. They tickle at their noses and make their mouths water. It is an effort to resist their appeal, and five kin succumb to their hunger.

These kin find their stomachs swelling, full of that strange glowing fungus; swelling, and swelling, and then bursting.

They will awake, wherever it is they fell asleep, tossed free of the dream by their horror.

Six of those who travelled down into the caves are focused enough on their task, on the poor lost filly, that they weave their way through thickening mushrooms, groaning and shifting at the delicious smell of them, but manage not to take a single bite.

They will step out to join those who travelled to the left, rejoining them on their quest through the shifting landscape of this strange dream.

Silence overtakes everything as the ash thickens: hoofsteps gone, voice swallowed before you can reach neighbors, even the soft flutter of ash through the air disappearing to nothingness. It means that when sound returns, it comes as a roar. Your feet come down on ash-free ground in a way that echoes, surprising and alarming, and your panting breaths are raspy, loud.

Roots and thorns have grown up all around you, forming walls on either side and a roof over your heads, transforming the path into a protected tunnel. And once again you find yourselves at a fork.

To the left, something is dripping between the winding branches, thick and oilslick black, gathering in pools that you will have to step over to make your way deeper.

To the right, down a ways, you can see that flowers have started to grow among the thorns and branches, blood red and sickly yellow. There is a faint chattering of birds.

Accuse awoke with a start and a nasty taste in his throat; something bitter and vile, with a harsh acid tang. He sputtered and coughed, trying to rid himself of both the taste and the most unbecoming images which flitted through his head. The remnants of the dream burst against the back of his eyelids like lightning, and he shook his head to rid himself of them.

There had been other kin, and he'd been cooperating with them. Willingly. They'd been a party of equals; he'd not been directing them or coercing them. As far as he could tell, they'd all entered into this voluntarily, whithout a second thought. And at such great risk! And what for? To save... a child without any indication of reward or favors curried. There hadn't even been parents making fevered promises or tribal leaders offering boons and status. No, this had been a dream about simply doing for others and not expecting anything in return.

What a wretched dream.
