Your Story:

The rain crashed down around the tree that I Fall Awake was sitting. Perched delicately at the very edge of the area protected by the tree’s branches, Daydreamer’s nose poked out into the downpour, leading thin rivulets of rain to course down her body in a pleasant dance. She dared not traipse through the swamp in such heavy rain as she was want to do when the showers were lighter, it was too dangerous and no matter how much she loved the rain, Daydreamer could not risk it.

The rain slowly let up, though it continued to drizzle. Slowly the sun peeked out, brilliant and soft at the same time, and gently baked the ever dampening earth to dry it just enough for creatures to safely walk around without worrying too much about sinking in.

Daydreamer barely shook as her eyes stared, almost unseeing into the heavily falling rain, just aware enough of her surroundings to be safe, but much more caught in visions of sunshine-rain and walking through a light mist.

She stepped out from under the tree, feeling the drops of water falling like light steps against her body, running a sprightly race down her spine.

A slight tremor ran through Daydreamer’s body, just a little cold and more than a little hungry. Absentmindedly, she picked herself up, gaze still caught by the rain and mind still trapped in the spider web of woven sunshine. In her dreams, her daydreams, she could fly, could soar, and never be afraid of plummeting down, down, down.

Seeing a small patch of mushrooms, one bite, two, three, and they were gone. Good enough sustenance for now.

A buck came towards her, through the rain and he smiled. She couldn’t help but smile back, something about him tugging at her heart. His eyes said, “Fly with me.”

It was okay to fly in dreams

What a wonderful, vivid dream. The water sluiced down her body, threatening to drag her down, but no matter.

She could soar with him.

They touched, nose to nose, and sighed softly.

He whispered to her, crooning kind words and phrases into her ear, rain falling around them.

She could let herself go in daydreams, let herself fall for him, this perfect figment of her imagination.

And so she went with him through suspended sunshine, glistening in the falling rain.

And when she woke, under a different tree, waking not from a daydream but true sleep, she wondering why she had allowed that wonderful waking dream to end, and so she fell awake again.

She heard him whisper:

I’m real.

Your Story: Mud didn't know how it happened, or rather who with. Or the details, which greatly bothered her. She's always prided herself on a perfect memory.

The last thing Mud remembers was visiting Sorrel's garden and being invited to stay for dinner. After that everything becomes a fog of half remembered dreams.

Until she woke up, that is. But by the time her mental haze wore off, all she could catch was the merest glimpse of a tail receding into the foliage. And as much as she wants more children, not knowing what their father looks like will always haunt her.

Your Story: There are plenty who might say that all joy is short-lived, and she might even agree- but she didn't take it as a sad statement. She merely vowed to herself to enjoy any opportunity that presented itself, no matter how short-lived.

So when she was out one day and encountered a handsome buck in her wanderings, well- she partook well in the joy of a chance encounter. The happiness of finding an unexpected friend for even a short time. The feel of sun-warmed grasses as she chased and was chased, then later the warmth and gentle nuzzles of another...

When she woke he was gone- but the joy itself was not. It lent a spring to her step after she shook the sleepiness from her limbs, as she was off to on another one of her endless wanderings.

...if she doesn't remember his name, doesn't remember the color of his eyes or anything like that- she isn't sad. All moments of joy are fragile things, but happiness can remain even when all other details have faded.

Your Story:
First Strike tore thoughtfully (and not a little vengefully) into the fresh mongoose before her, chewing rhythmically as she pondered the news. Her other children had brought tidings that her favourite son had gone off and had foals with some doe right as she'd crushed the tiny skull beneath a crimson hoof. "You're a grandma now, Mother," they had said before leaving, eyeing the still-convulsing body with distaste, "act like one some time." Currently, said breakfast felt rather ruined.

Grandfoals. From her darling Mercy. With some doe. GRANDfoals.

And what did any of it have to do with her breakfast habits, anyway? Abruptly, she stepped back, ground the remnants of the carcass into the mud and strode away. She had made her decision: she would go get laid. That would show them. Grandma still had it. Not having seen fit to wash the lurid bloodstains all across her muzzle and chest off before this hunt; it took some time before she finally found a buck that did not run screaming from the sight of her.

Your Story:
It wasn't often Dark Side was startled. In fact, as he barely refrained from jumping out of his skin at the low, sultry chuckle behind him, he realized he couldn't remember the last time someone had taken him by surprise. He'd been so busy spying on a group of do-gooder kin from his shadowed spot he hadn't realized someone else had snuck up on him from behind. It took all his self-control to turn his head slowly, almost nonchalantly, as he plastered a hooded look on his face that read 'You did not scare me. I knew you were there the whole time'. He gave the doe a cool appraising look, noticing she was doing the same to him with a raised brow, her own face replying 'You're full of it, and you know it'.

He gave a quick glance in the direction of the kin he'd been watching, to see them disappearing deeper into the swamp, and he sighed softly as he turned back to the doe behind him. She, in turn, rolled her eyes. "Really?" she spoke, in a normal volume, now that his prey was out of earshot. "You're more interested in that pack of rabble than me?"

He wanted to harrumph at her, to be annoyed she was interrupting him, but to be honest, he was impressed by her; not just that she was as stealthy as he, but that she'd had enough wherewithal (and respect) not to give him away to the group he'd been following. Sure, he had lost them for now, but had he been seen, it would have been worse. While all of this was going through his head, he was eying her more fully, and appreciatively. He finally replied to her question with a smirk as his eyes finally made their way back to hers. "Not in the slightest."

"Good, because I was hoping to find out if you were as good at certain...other things as you are at hiding in the shadows." She swished her tail as she brushed against him, smiling seductively. "So what's your name, spymaster?"

"Dark Side." He was becoming slightly flustered by her nearness (a feeling he was not used to), and didn't even think to ask for her name in return.

She grinned as she turned to lead him somewhere private. "I think I'll just call you Shadow."

He found no reason to protest, on either front.

Your Story: She wasn't singing.

For some reason that struck him as a crime: Singing Sand doubled back a little (his sister could wait; she had a pretty voice, but he did like hearing new kin, too!) and crouched down to listen again. She was one of those does that'd talk to their pets, and her voice was scratchy, warm and (obviously) unfamiliar. Her throat wasn't in the best condition; Rumble could tell with ease that she had sounded better, and that she could again. She had a deep voice, not altogether unusual.

But it was so captivating.

Rumble uncurled himself from the floor and picked himself up. Ugh - he was messy. But that didn't matter. He cleared his throat, made sure that his voice was in a workable state with a few warm-ups, and then approached. The doe was already staring at him. Oh, dear, had she heard that? That couldn't do.

"I'm sorry, it's just that your voice caught me off guard. Your - " He paused, and glanced at the pet she'd been murmuring to before he'd interrupted. "Your mongoose seems very lovely; does it sing, too?"

She had an incredulous laugh, but it was so beautiful. Rumble was pleased. Yes, he'd chosen well. "I mean, I wouldn't like to presume, but - you do sing, don't you? Please - it would be a terrible thing if you didn't. Your voice is something to behold."

"I don't think you've heard me singing," she said finally. "Who are you?"

"I'm Singing Sand - you can call me Rumble; you probably haven't been to the desert but that's really what it sounds like anyway. Singing Sand, I mean. It's so beautiful, I don't know - you should head out there some time. Not to presume, but the desert is really gorgeous. Lots of color, lots of life. I mean, there's life here, too, and I guess you could say that there's a lot more voices. More things speak. But the desert has a sublime sound. Trust me, it can't be matched. Are you from around here? I'm not from around here; I - "

"That's very well," she answered, but she sounded like she was laughing.

"Is something the matter? Oh, you were - you were foraging, weren't you? For…berries, of some sort? I'm sorry, I have a weakness for pretty voices. I'd like a choir, see, and of course - well, who doesn't like hearing pretty things? So I couldn't really help but overhear - "

"It wasn't anything private, anyway." The doe cocked her head. “You can help me finish up to make up for it, I guess,” she allowed. “And you can tell me about your choir while we’re working.”

“That sounds more than fair. You know, I…” he began, and when he walked away from the encounter he didn’t regret that he’d probably never see her again.

Your Story:
She had been travelling along the outskirts of the swamp. The unusually cold winter had killed off her flowers and so, with nothing better to do, she had followed her wanderlust. It was during this period that she had met him.

She remembers it being dark that night, the moon barely a sliver in the sky. Crabapple sounded an alarm call as the stranger approached, and she sniffed the air, closing her eyes as she breathed in. Fresh dirt, cardamom, clementines – she was intrigued.

“Hush, Crabapple. It’s okay.”
The rox mewled at its owner, slinking away.

Moments later, the stranger appeared at the opening of her temporary shelter – a gentle willow, its branches rustling quietly in the breeze. She could just make out a silhouette, a muscular physique, strong and thick. And when he spoke, it was a low rumble.

She smiled as she drew closer, circling him as she answered his question. She had not yet met another kin this far out of the swamp, and this one smelt so warm.

Your Story: River Stone could not explain her pregnancy, no matter how many times she searched the sky for an answer. The rain continued to drizzle as she lay beneath her current shelter of a tree, her tail flicking thoughtfully to and fro as she continued to stare up through the leaves, merely blinking away the droplets that fell into or near her eyes.

“It must have been a ghost… Yes. I was seduced by a ghost in my sleep.” But then she frowned again, having made another impossible question to answer. “But was he a malevolent ghost? Or maybe he fell in love with me on first sight? No, because he would still be here if that were the case…” She looked around, ears flicking a bit. “You aren’t still here are you, Mr. Ghost?” And of course, there was no response.

“Maybe I met you in a past life… Yes. That must be it.” River continued to ramble quietly to herself, thinking aloud about all the possibilities of how she could have possibly met said Mr. Ghost, and what in the name of the swamp he had wanted to impregnate her for.

Your Story: Brightroar's head spun, this is what he hated the most, waking up in the morning unable to remember what had happened. He knew he'd scored, and that she'd been a pretty one at that, but couldn't remember anything past that point. The buck raised his head groggily. He was alone in the grove that he remembered (somewhat) stumbling into at dusk, hot on the heels of a flirty doe. He closed his eyes and tried to recall something, the color of her coat, markings, name, scent, or anything for that matter. Brightroar drew a blank. Nothing, nada, goose egg. He couldn't remember anything about the doe.

Maybe I should try to find her, can't have gotten too far… he thought to himself.

The buck tried to stand up but then decided that lying around wouldn't hurt anyone, least of all him. There were plenty of other does in the world, and if worst came to worst, then he'd deal with that when he got there. But for the moment, rest, the dull throb in his head didn't seem to be going away.

Your Story: Sandy huffed as she looked around the plains, trying to spot any sign of white.

Her brother had wandered off again. Typical. Probably off to practice his singing or whatever. She had never understood what was so fascinating about it. Running was MUCH more fun. Feeling the wind against your face as your feet pounded off the soft ground, sand swirling and dancing around you with each step. The mere thought made her heart race, and she broke out into a grin as she trotted, slowly breaking out into a gallop.

Laughter rang through the air as she ran, faster and faster, each step leaving a trail of sand swirling in the air, as if it were laughing and dancing with her. As each step picked up speed, the more sand started swirling around. Completely entranced, she danced and pranced, unaware that off to the distance, a storm was brewing. It wasn't until she stopped prancing that she noticed the sand had never settled, but was whipping about more viciously.

"Ow, hey! Stop!" She shut her eyes to keep from getting sand in her eyes. When she heard rushing winds and felt that the sand wasn't backing down, she slowly peeked one eye open, and her jaw dropped, which she quickly closed as grains of sand were getting in her mouth.

Oh crud. It was a sandstorm.

She had only heard rumours about them, but had never personally seen one. She heard that they were even faster than an acha, and that they would often spirit away anyone it gobbled up. She didn't know how much of it was true, but she wasn't planning on sticking around to find out.

Quickly heading in the other direction, she ran as fast as she could, hoping to outrun the storm. But it was no use. She was no match for it. Sand buffeted her face, and she gasped as the wind knocked the wind out of her. Struggling to stand upright, she staggered as the storm attacked her relentlessly, and she felt herself being slowly lifted off the ground. Was this how it was going to end? Would she never see her brother again? As she was about to give up hope, she heard a voice, calling out to her.

R-Rumble?

No, it didn't sound like him. She was so tired, and could barely keep her eyes open, but the voice kept calling, calling. Telling her not to give up. Before she slipped into unconsciousness, she felt herself being picked up, felt something warm under her. Was she... being carried?

"W-who are you...?" she whispered. But they never responded, and she finally passed out.

--------------------------

When she awoke, she found herself alone, resting in the shade of a cactus. Quickly getting up, she looked around for the one who had saved her, but there was nothing, no one. They never left their name, but they left her something else. Something she'd never forget.

Your Story: Moon in Her Eye was a notorious tease. She loved luring men in and leaving them hanging. On this day, however, she had caught sight of a buck that seemed to be either deaf, or entirely uninterested in her or any other kin.

This was entirely unacceptable. Instead of walking away, as she probably should have done, she decided instead to follow him. What in the world did she expect to come of it? Perhaps she would learn his weaknesses? Well, not in one day, that was for sure.

He moved a bit slowly, what eventually seemed methodically, across the swamp. He teased her, stopped to munch on some goodies and she could see his eyes sliding back to watch her, though she was trying quite hard to stay hidden. Curses, she just apparently wasn't doing very well; she tried harder. Eventually, her efforts seemed to pay off, as he seemed to stop looking over his shoulder for her. He continued on a lazy path through the swamp, and though Miss Moon-Eyes never gave more than an hour or two to any buck, she found herself hours later still following the same fellow.

Until she found herself in a glen, with no sign of him, and confused as to how exactly she'd come into this area. She begin to search a bit more, and finally realized that while she had earlier been 'hunting' him, it seemed he had cornered her instead. She heard a twig snap behind her, and she turned to see his large silhouette in the shade of their found corner of the swamp.

"I..." She narrowed her eyes in thought for a moment, then took a deep breath and seemed to attempt to glance around him. "Is there an easy way out of this section of the swamp?"

He took a step towards her, consequently directly into her line of sight, and she knew that she was as cornered now as she had sometimes made others feel. He loomed, and replied, "Perhaps we can find one together." He closed in and encompassed her, and what once felt like intimidation suddenly became increasingly alluring; Moon gave in to the intrigue that had earlier been more prevalent.

Your Story: It happened on a sunny afternoon in the far reaches of the Swamp. Sunlit Journey was walking along, looking for some herbs that his new acquaintance Sorrel told him about. As he searched, looking closely at ground rather than the path in front of him, he heard the rustling of leaves from behind him. Sun turned around, but saw nothing, so he continued his search. A short while later he heard more rustling, this time coming from his left. He looked to his left, but again saw nothing. Sun wondered what could possibly be going on, but put the thought behind him a moment later. Sun walked just a few yards more before coming upon exactly what he was looking for. He lowered his head, ready to pluck the herbs when he felt something hard make contact with his head.

When Sun finally woke up, he was lying next to a pond. He rose to his feet and looked around, trying to find out where he was, “What happened?” What he didn’t know was that a lonely and desperate doe had seen Sunlit Journey all by himself and decided that she would get her own babies, even if that meant by force.
