Psykgi Mentha

"Being a cog in a machine is not a bad thing." She had just said to a young visitor. They'd seen her booth, and her advice wall. The question had inspired them to ask the same, and inspired her to give the same answer. She'd waved at them as she'd returned to her duties, had smiled until she was halfway down the hall, and then -- alone, save for the security cameras -- it had dissolved into a frown.

Being a cog was not bad. Being a small part of something greater was not bad. This was what she'd been told all her life, and she'd been happy to be this part. But... was she? Was she really? You're capable of great things her mother had told her, right alongside, You're meant to be a part of something bigger than yourself and support others in their aims. Those were not mutually exclusive, or conflicting, but sometimes, Psykgi felt...

No, none of that.

Psykgi forced the smile back on her face and kept moving forward.

Psykgi Mentha

Psykgi was determined to get through the courtyard unscathed this time, despite the raucous dodgeball game going on yet again. She ducked her head down and rushed forward, through a seeming hail of dodgeballs.

She felt a few strike her, strays from the game... but not her face. Not her gogdamn face.

Victory was hers.

Psykgi Mentha

The rhythms of Psykgi's days had evened out after the initial chaos of Bloodfest, and somehow, she was finding herself in the cafeteria at the same time every night. She packed her lunches these days, something nutritious but simple -- not requiring brainpower to eat, since she needed it for everything else.

Ma'am had made sure her lunch was tasty and comforting. Which, of course, meant that no small amount of roaches came out when Psykgi had opened her lunchbag, and a few lay dead in her food.

Psykgi was used to this, though, as was Ma'am -- cockroaches were a part of a healthy breakfast. And lunch. And dinner. Ma'am considered her sacrifice as just a part of supporting the communal organism -- of herself, of her child, of the greater whole of troll society. Ma'am expected Psykgi to reciprocate in some way, at some point, and Psy was trying... She crunched a roach, then another, and then -- as a finisher to clear her mouth, she opened a peppermint.

The whole gesture was so familiar -- almost too familiar. The last thing that Psy wanted to do was be stuck in a rut.

Lunchtime was over, however, and her lunch was finished. She had to think about work now, and that itself was familiar enough to do on semi-autopilot.

Psykgi Mentha

Psykgi didn't get lost in the facility anymore -- she knew it's somewhat twisty corridors as well as she knew her own symbol with it's circles and stripes. This hallway was as familiar as the others, with it's slightly yellowing art on the walls. The old destructive art, the new equally destructive art, the stress of life on Alternia coming out and being expressed in the only way some stresses could be.

Aside from her special inkblot, she didn't draw much. She didn't know if she wanted to see what she would draw. She was worried enough about what she would see if she ever took her inkblots too seriously.

The space tower imagery, as before, made her cringe a little, but it was not as much as it once had been. It was odd -- she didn't feel better, just more used to seeing it. The Old Hemisect destruction imagry were beginning to be taken down, but they still brought back memories.

Memories were things that one had to live with, expressed or not. She brushed her dyed bangs out of her face, and continued onwards... to live with herself and her fears.

Psykgi Mentha

She didn't talk about work, not on the cafeteria, not elsewhere. Psykgi sometimes sat with other staff when she had lunch, and they spoke of many things.

But not work. Not the patients. That was chat for meetings and staff rooms, and it somehow felt strange even then. Psykgi often thought of her work as a game or a show on display -- she uncovered fascinating secrets and found the pressure points that would bring her more. She would discuss things in a way that would change the way that people thought, acted, existed.

Sometimes, though, she felt entrusted to something sacred -- the deepest hopes and dreams of a person, the elements of themselves that even they were unaware of. Their needs, their pains, their deepest memories. They had placed something as important and vulnerable as organs in her hands, and trusted her with their care -- to help them. To save them. It was a heavy burden, and one that even she couldn't joke about.

So she couldn't laugh and gossip about it with the others. She couldn't discuss some of these with even the other staff. Something held her back, held all those secrets back. Only her files -- and her direct superior -- could know.

Psykgi Mentha

Psykgi happened to look up as Resmem passed by. She lifted a hand to wave, her voice beginning in her throat to call out and greet the doctor, but she was already gone. The hand returned to her desk, her voice died in her throat. She frowned to herself -- she wanted to talk to the doctor about a few things, but...

Well, no. It wasn't anything important, was it? Not at all. She returned to her files: There was organization to do, people and careers lived and died on the backbone of organization. In a very literal way.

If things were organized, Psykgi's job would be that much easier. And Dr. Resmem... would come again. Psykgi could talk to her then.

Psy hadn't been sleeping well this past week, so when she walked by the dodgeball court, she... forgot... her usual strategies for avoiding the ball of death. It was a vulnerable moment, an exhausted stare, now surprised, now angry as the dodgeball struck her and bounced away.

Awake, now, she took a deep breath and shuffled away, stealing into a hidden corner to rub her aching, tired face. She smacked her cheeks once -- twice -- and pushed a smile on her face.

Wake up, Psy. she thought, determined to get through the night, It's showtime.

Psykgi Mentha

She'd tried to recrtify her sleep schedule, but it didn't seem to be working out. She'd tossed and turned in her sopor slime, and then had decided to get up early just to avoid the feeding frenzy of her nightmares.

It wasn't working out well this night. In the darkened theatre she was observing, she was being lulled towards some sort of sleep. A peppermint in her mouth, and a concious effort of mental and physical tricks, was all that kept her awake.

In the theatre, watching the old PSA loop around again, her sleep-deprived mind offered up a cranky thought. Not one she'd ever voiced, nor one she dared to really think about for too long. It was, simply put, that whenever they talked about the place of lowbloods, she felt herself twitch with frustration. She wanted to resist it, to shout at the screen that No! That is not my place. No! That is not who I am!

But it was, wasn't it? She was a support for those above her. She was destined to greatness within the boundaries in the system. She was the medic, the encourager, the one who leads by example and makes sure that others above her lead well. And wasn't she happy? She was.

She was.

Psykgi crunched at her peppermint, breaking it into little methol shards, and then popped in another mint, drowning out her thoughts in the flavor...

Psykgi Mentha

A beautiful nights sleep, and all annoying thoughts were silenced for the time being. A delicious light lunch, a decent schedule, and nothing going wrong. Nothing at all. Patients were checked, charts were marked, internal communications were sent and recieved.

Yes, it was a typical day for Psykgi. Until she came home and realized that she had, somehow, missed the cookie that her lusus had put in her lunchbox. It was a nice one, too, a sugar cookie with peppermint and chocolate strewn throughout -- clearly a reward for good behavior, of unknown origin. Had Ma'am baked it? Had she stolen it?

Psykgi didn't care. Seeing it, forgotten, abandoned, made her feel... odd. Unreasonably upset. Confusedly upset. She gave it a look and stuck it in the fridge before storming upstairs without really knowing why...

Psykgi Mentha

There was a scuffle in the courtyard today -- Psykgi watched with vaguely concerned wariness as she crossed the courtyard to an appointment. She found the movements difficult to trace -- who was fighting who? Who was winning? What was the cause?

A shoe flew out of the scuffle, green in color but stained with blotches of blue. Bloody, or a fashion statement? Psykgi nudged it thoughtfully, then flinched in pain as something hit her in the side.

A dodgeball.

She glared towards the scuffle, annoyed, and contemplated throwing it right back in. But no, that wouldn't do. The orderlies seemed to be calming everything down and if she acted so reactive it would only get her in trouble. Wholly unnecessary trouble.

The scuffle broke up and a half-concious greenblood, bleeding from their sniffnode, was bustled past her. She stepped out of the way, watched, and headed to her next appointment, wishing she knew just a little bit more...

Psykgi Mentha

An entertainer was gracing the wiggler's ward, displaying -- in puppet show -- the values that 'all good little trolls should know.' Psykgi observed specific young trolls who were her patients, and the room in general. The entertainer themselves was no exception -- Juggalos always had and always would hold a fascination for her. Where did their passion come from? Why? How did this one manage the gruelling task of ministering to children? It was getting harder and harder, Psykgi noticed, to interact with the younger patients. Her thinkpan was maturing, and they may as well be alien species for all she understood them.

But that simply meant that she needed to study them, and practice with and on them. Still, how amazing that she used to be a child, and now found it so hard to understand them... was this one of the 'miracles' that they spoke of? It certainly was intriguing, but in the end it was bordered by sientific fact. The changes in troll anatomy over time were well known by doctors. It wasn't Psykgi's field of study...

But maybe she needed to have a solid week of research -- just on this phenomenon. After all, knowing how children changed was important to ensuring that child patients became productive Alternian adults. Maybe Dr. Dromen would have some insight...

Psykgi Mentha

It only felt like she was going around in circles, she knew. The layout of the facility was labrynthine and difficult, but it made full use of the space it was alloted by the government. She was used to it by now, and she knew where she was going, but it didn't stop the feeling of walking in circles.

The artwork seemed to repeat, but that was just an illusion. The numbers of the rooms told the truth, but even they jumped around somewhat, just to confuse. It was just a holdover, though, from the field's beginnings in interrogation. Confuse, disorient, convince...

Psykgi was used to it.…]

It was only an average scene, Psykgi mused as she looked at the new ocean mural on the wall. It wasn't anything special. Walk into any given patient's room, and you'd see pretty much the same thing.

When the small mural had first gone up in the cafeteria, Psykgi had been hoping for more. Something, maybe, that would display the successes of the highly promising art therapy program.

But no, it was just another ocean scene. Bland. Decent enough to look at, but if she wanted to look at the ocean, she would have gone to the boardwalk, not the cafeteria.

It was calming, though. And she supposed some of the patients (and hardworking doctors and orderlies) wouldn't have that opportunity. Ah well, such was life.

Psykgi Mentha

Psygki frowned at the newer trend of wall pictures, trying and failing to not be disturbed at the clear daywalkers on display. The psionic monstrousity that had nearly killed her was still fresh on her mind, in an uncomfortably literal way -- her head still hurt sometimes, when she thought of it, and she sometimes thought she felt it's presence pressing against her. Petting a roach usually helped her, but others didn't have an omnipresent lusus to help them.

Psykgi was concerned, but was also glad that the rehab center was there for them, for trolls like herself who couldn't quite forget the horrors that once were trolls themselves.
Well, more or less. Could she really tell anyone her feelings? She might not get culled, but she might end up in one of the deeper rooms... or worse, without either of her jobs.

She looked away from the images, fingers running over the friendship bracelet Leeroi had given her to calm herself.

Psykgi Mentha

Today was an uneventful day, perfect for paperwork and clearing up her desk of past things. Psygki was taking a break from this relative 'break' to have her lunch and continue an attempt she was making to create another friendship bracelet. It was so simple, and so touching.. Plus, it might be a good terapy modality to try, so she was all for it. Either way, Psykgi wanted to make sure she could do it again.

So far, not so good -- the damn strings weren't going the way they were supposed to, and she kept forgetting the pattern. She'd had to undo a great deal of progress twice now, and with her lunch break over, she set it aside to figure it out some other time...
