50. Forever and a Day

Through Your Eyes didn’t believe in eternities. All things must die and she wasn’t particularly bothered by that. If she was, she wouldn’t be killing so many other creatures on a regular basis. There was no forever, not for dragons, not for wolves.

Perhaps some held delusions of the eternal, of eternal love, eternal life, eternal hatred, eternal death, but she didn’t. Nothing was forever, certainly not love and life, but not even death. All living things lived once more, perhaps just not in the way they lived now and not as themselves.

Forever and a day was something for her scoff at, a concept to mock.

She saw the world as it was and eternity was for fools.

7/7 - Tickle - Wasp VIII - 106 words (Hollyhock V, Dogrot III, Murkcrow VI)

Wasp had to admit, there was a certain appeal to the small animals Wild Sage kept about him. (That Wasp had given them to Sage in the first place was neither here nor there.) He could feel the mouse crawling across his back, all ticklish fur and tiny feet. Wasp wiggled and resettled the mouse to a comfortable position between his shoulder blades.

"As I was saying, I think you could keep the rocks, but you'd have to do something about the ferns growing between them." Wasp sketched a vague outline in the dirt. "And you'd need a whole lot more of those big giant leaves."

Double Vision 04 - Comfort



After only a few minutes, he could tell that this wasn't going to work. With a sigh, he heaved himself over onto his other side, but that wasn't much help, either. He wondered briefly if he could balance himself on his back, somehow, but immediately dismissed the idea as impractical (and probably uncomfortable besides). He rose to adjust his bedding again with a weary sigh, nudging the lumps in his strange nest into a new configuration. He lowered himself down again, and laid every which way he could think of, but it was a lot cause.

No matter how many grasses, leaves, feathers, and furs he gathered, he just couldn't get comfortable with sleeping alone.

Breaking The Ice (3/5) - 14. Rain

Breaking The Ice tilted his head to the side as the first drops hit his face. Then the skies opened up and pelted him with rain. At first, he sought to seek shelter under the stretched out branches of a tree. But after a moment of standing there, he took a tentative step back out. It wasn't long till his fur was soaked through. This wasn't cold rain but rather a summer rain, warm. The air around him had felt sticky with humidity for quite some time now so it was no surprise a storm appeared.

Through looked about for any other kin. There could be no witnesses to what he would do next. Sure that he was alone, he pranced through the deepening puddles and thrust his head side to side in a dance that was absolutely silly in all ways. This was the effect of rain on him.

5/5: Look-See- Kiss

First kisses are always awkard. Especially moreso than when it's from your hero. An unlikely hero at that. He told her he was white, pink and purple. Just like her save the extra shade. She saw him close enough to verify he spoke the truth. But that kiss. Now that was a memory she kept. Not for cherishing, but for the bleak times in which she was brought so low, she was sad and wanted to cry. She would think of that blundering of teeth, lips and gums, and it would cheer her right up. Her first kiss was horrible.

48. The Path Less Traveled

The path she walked was not one that she had necessarily chosen for herself. She had been set upon it by the MotherFather through her naming dreaming. It was certainly different from the ones her siblings had been given though.

Her choice was how she walked it. She could have chosen an open heart and a vulnerable mind, let so many kin in that she forgot that her eyes belonged to her and her only in the end. Instead, she had chosen to walk the path with a guarded smile, a mirthful heart, and words that amused her as much as they kept others at just the right distance.

Some had naming dreams so vague that they got to choose their own path while others very clearly had been set upon one long before they had gained the ability to choose. Still, you could always choose how you traveled and that was one thing that belonged Through Your Eyes and just her. The way her hooves fell made it a different path and it was one that she traveled as alone as she wanted to.

7/8 - Kiss - Hollyhock VI - 134 words (Dogrot III, Murkcrow VI, Wasp VIII)

The sweet kiss of the sun was a welcome reprieve from days of drenching rain. The terror that kept Hollyhock cowering in the hollow of a tree had lifted, and now she felt more like wandering around in the mud, splashing muck everywhere and enjoying the feeling of it drying against her fur.

Of course, when she came home again, Bristletail just sighed and clucked his tongue, scolding her while he knocked the mud off with a leafy branch.

"But Briiiistletail!" Hollyhock whined. "It was so nice and sunny today!"

"Just because it's sunny doesn't mean you should go out and get yourself covered in mud," he pointed out. "You should take a proper bath."

"Dooooon't wanna." She didn't have any mud to throw at him, so she hit him with her tail instead.

Breaking The Ice (4/5) - 29. Food

Breaking The Ice gripped the edges of the giant leaf in his mouth carefully but firmly, so as not to lose his meal. He had a specific place in mind where he could eat in peace. Never the one to share much of anything with anyone unless social norms required it of him, he was in search of seclusion. Luckily, there was a nice flat rock he had found quite some time ago. It was of a reasonable enough size to set a meal down. He trotted atop the thick layer of moss on the ground. It made for comfortable seating while he ate. Ever so gently, he placed the leaf full of fruits down. Then he plopped down in the moss and began to enjoy the bounty before him.

1/5: Look-See- Walls

She did not want to touch these walls. She heard them scuttle on their soft feet. Strands pulsed in the wind. She felt them beckon. She did not want to touch these cobwebs. Hairy little feet danced around their center webs and waited. The upside was she could not see them, but just knowing that they were there was enough. Look-see hated spiders. And now she was surrounded on almost all sides by their webs. What if she walked through one and it attached itself to her dazzling array of flowers and laid its eggs there!? NUMEROUS, COUNTLESS OF EGGS. ON HER. IN HER. IN HER MOUTH WHILE SHE SLEPT OR IN HER EAR. Mercifully the cavalry was here. Her heart settled at the smell of charred woods.

7/9 - Smile - Hollyhock VI - 116 words (Dogrot III, Murkcrow VI, Wasp VIII)

"For you, sweet Holly, a lovely flower," Bristletail said, carefully nestling a flower in the crook between her horns and her ear.

She couldn't see the flower, of course, but Bristletail always brought her lovely fragrant flowers. Hollyhock inhaled deeply and smiled up at him. "You found more lavender?"

He nodded. "Yes, but the season's almost up. We'll need to dry it." Bristletail looked up at the sky. "If the weather holds, at least."

"Does it look like rain? It doesn't smell like rain. I hope it isn't rain. I really hope it isn't rain." Hollyhock leaned back against him.

"It's just clouds, is all," he said, leaning down for a surreptitious peck on her nose.

Breaking The Ice (5/5) - 23. Sweet Dreams

Breaking The Ice watched as the clouds slowly parted to reveal the moon already high in the night sky. Countless bugs could be heard singing their song to the swamp. He blinked his eyes in weariness. It had been a rather long day for him. There had been many moments where he almost had to talk to other kin. Most of his day had spent getting out of such situations. He just felt so awkward and scared and just did not know what to do. Now that night had fallen, he was able to finally just walk without looking behind his back. It had been some time now and no kin had popped up to scare him. So he settled against the aged stump of a long forgotten tree.

"Sweet dreams," he said to himself. Just before he dozed off, he wished for a dream that he had lots of friends for that would surely be a sweet dream.
