Psykgi Mentha

Psykgi ate her lunch overlooking the courtyard, watching, as she did sometimes. The cafeteria was informative on its own, but the courtyard...

Well, the courtyard was a microcosm of the mind at play. Aside from the orderlies, everyone was acting out their needs as trolls -- for social companionship, for aggression.

The four quadrants game down below was a microcosm in a microcosm -- she could almost hear the cries from here. Idly, she picked one troll and watched them.

They, after all, looked like a winner.

Psykgi Mentha

New artwork had appeared on the walls in recent perigees -- collapsing buildings, towers of terrifying energy, some sort of tornado throwing glass shards. At least, she thought it was glass shards -- it was something sharp, carrying blood of several colors along with it.

It looked vaguely familiar, but Psykgi, after a moment of appreciation, mostly just shrugged. It would always be something, of course. The walls of the rehab center would always reflect the active traumas of the world. That was just how it worked.

She found the bulletin board and put up a bright, colorful Bloodfest poster -- it broke up the violent imagery nicely, a good contrast, she thought.

Psykgi Mentha

Psykgi prepared the take-out container with a few small treats and a box of apple juice and a little smile drawn on it in sharpie. Her handiwork was, while not exquisite, pretty dang good. She smiled down at it, and began to carry it out.

The patient's room was deep in the hall, guarded and sealed up to unauthorized entry. The guard was new, and gave her an aggressive look until she flashed her card -- and her authorization slip. He stared at the food, and she smiled sweetly and, with a swipe of her keycard, walked into the room.

The gratitude in the patient's eyes, as they locked onto the offered lunch in the harsh light of the single incandescent bulb in the dark room, was gratifying. They hadn't eaten, Psykgi knew, in two nights -- unauthorized contact was forbidden, and food was only permitted if delivered, personally, by an authorized person. She'd made sure to exclude any timekeeping equipment, or any way they could tell that it hadn't been a single night.

They gorged the mass-produced food and, in between breaths and swallows, thanked her profusely. Their behavior changes were coming along very well, it seemed -- she sat down nearby, notebook open, and waited for their session to begin.

Art from one of her success stories was always welcome. On their latest check-in, they had told her that drawing helped them, and it wasn't unlikely -- art was a perfectly valid way to work out one's inappropriate rage. Or therapy in general, the results papering the walls.

The artwork the now ex-patient had given her was a self-portrait, done in teal and grey. Psykgi kept it pinned on her corkboard and, over the course of her worknight, found herself glancing at it.

And smiling.

Children. How had they gotten so young?! Psykgi stared down at the children in the wiggler's block, suddenly at a loss for how to talk to them, or interact with them. She'd seen the slightest hint of red in her eyes that morning, too.. was she just... getting older?

Either way, it meant she needed to double down on observing children if she wanted to stay on top of treating them. She put on her best smile and decided to just try to figure it out. She knew she had the energy for it.

It shouldn't be too hard.

Psykgi Mentha

Earlier that evening, before work, Psykgi had walked along the boardwalk, enjoying the sea air. The sight of booths being set up, and the construction in preparation for the upcoming Bloodfest, invigorated her. The ocean-themed wallpaper of the dormicile blocks felt much the same (though they could use a touch up, the wall of the block she peeked at was stained and in need of repairs).

Ah, what a time that would be. She posted up a bloodfest poster, right near the domicile blocks, so that those who weren't under confinement would be sure not to miss it.

Someone had drawn a mask today. Masked trolls, Psykgi had gotten used to -- but masks themselves? Not so much. Normally, this would not be a problem, but the masks in this troll's picture was grotesque. It was distended and awkward on the ill-drawn troll face in the background, painted in strange patterns in troll-appropriate colors. Blood, possibly.

Despite the childish quality of the troll in the drawing, the mask was detailed -- meticulously so -- and Psykgi got strange vibes from it. She took note in that trolls records to keep an eye on them and how their therapy developed -- she had a feeling about them, one that she wasn't sure of yet but that would resolve itself in time.

Later, as she walked down the labrynthine halls, she saw that someone had put masks -- grotesque, taped-on masks -- on some of the art hanging along the halls. The effect was unsettling, but she left it up for the time being, her mind stewing with curiousity.

The mask tack-ons had to be taken down and SOMEONE was on a power trip and had forcefully asked Psykgi to do it. Psykgi answered it with her usual can-do attitude and, honestly, it was fine by her because she intended to collect the creepy little things and compare it to the "original" mask. Were they all done by the same troll? How had that troll done this unsupervised? Why?

Plus, she had a break anyway.

Dr. Resmem zipped by as Psykgi worked, and she gave the good doctor a wave, watching as she turned the corner. Psykgi wished she had a bigger part to play in the operations of the rehab center, but she'd get there! There was always more to do, and she was pretty happy for what she had for now. She had patients and duties and, eventually, she had more.

She could pluck tiny masks off the walls for a little bit longer.

Psykgi Mentha

Psykgi emerged from the isolation cell, relieved to even be in the open space of the hallway and pleased at the progress of the patient's behavior modification therapy. A few more sessions like that, and, in her (admittedly inexperienced) professional opinion, they could begin careful re-contact with the outside world. Of course, the other doctors on this patient's case would agree.

She stretched and, just as she did so, a cart hurtled down the hall, an oddly calm patient -- an orangeblood teen -- strapped onto it. She watched, curiously, as they entered an isolation cell further down the hall. The patient looked calm and undamaged, but the orderlies looked grim. Dire, even.

Gosh -- what had happened there?

Well, if she was free later, she could find out.

Dr. Resmem passed by, clipboard in hand, but Psykgi was too absorbed in the report in front of her to do more than be positionally aware of another person in the hall. Psykgi's docket was full, and she barely even glanced up occasionally from her report to make sure she was going in the right direction.

Frankly, she was not looking forward to her next patient. They were one of those socially maladjusted sorts that offended everyone on multiple levels. The only reason they hadn't been culled was for their potential skillset, which could be valuable if harnessed. Of course, the case had been assigned to her because no one else wanted to deal with this troll -- the pronged antlerbeast always stopped at the redblood, and she was the only one available and qualified.

Honestly, she wouldn't have minded. It happened all the time, and she was used to it. Normally, aberrant behavior was a great opportunity. But this troll wasn't even interesting. They were boring, and they were boring in that tone of voice that would make anyone want to strangle them, with infuriating mannerisms, and an unpleasant odor that was just subtle enough to keep coming back. That troll was that itch that one never gets used to. How they weren't culled already was probably a testament to their lusus.

But they were smart, and had some talents, motivation (somewhere). And it was now Psykgi's job to make this troll work. And figure out if they had any rebellious tendencies because no one was quite sure.

Fan ******** tastic.

The report stated that invasive measures might be needed, and from what Psykgi saw, she believed it... not only to fix this troll's behavior but to, maybe, spice them up a bit. She'd do her best to work with this troll before figuring out how to put them under the scalpel.

Or her axe.

She sighed as she approached her office to prepare herself some much needed peppermint tea.

Maybe she wouldn't bring the axe.

Psykgi Mentha

Some people would argue that a wiggling day was sacred, and not to be used to produce items for the consumption of others. Psykgi found herself disagreeing with this assessment.

She left the nervous, overly-shy patient and their additional celebrants to their crafting and icing-rich storebought cupcakes with a friendly wave.

"Happy wiggling day!" she cheered, taking the items they had finished. She was off shift soon, and could finally stock her booth - for better than free. After all, crafts were a great way to change behavior, and trolls could express so much through art.

Of course, production ability was low. There was only so much that a patient, or group of patients, could do. But, for these small, special prizes... well, Psykgi could easily flesh out her booth's needs. It wasn't as though she had been told not to, right?

Someone had told her to tone down the prize making, but what Psykgi found interesting was, when she polled the young patient in her session, they had honestly enjoyed making some of her prizes. It was like they felt rewarded by having their work used -- what a thought. Maybe she was onto something? Art and artisanal products produced as part of therapy? It was a little close to unpaid labor, but if it worked out... well, maybe she could figure out a way to make it pay. But if it was incentivising itself, and changing behavior for the better, why not?

Art... would certainly help the Rehab Center make its mark on the Civisect and greater public. maybe it would take some of the shame, stigma, and uncertainty out of her field...

Now that was an idea.

Psykgi Mentha

Psykgi watched another intense match of Four Quadrants from the cafeteria window, thinking -- oddly enough -- about art. She actually wasn't very good at art. The inkblots she made were the extent of her abilities, and they weren't that difficult or interesting to create. Often, in the nights before Bloodfest, she made them while listening to the radio or a text-to-speech of a research paper.

But, as she scribbled an abstract pattern onto the blank page at the back of her notebook, an image that looked like one of her inkblots. Its symmetry was artificial, she was trying -- idly, but truly trying this time. She thought about the game outside, she thought about her patients, she thought about the bland food in front of her, and she doodled.

Afterward, she looked at her inkblot, with it's strange (and unintentional) resemblance to her symbol, and wondered why it unnerved her so...

Psykgi Mentha

A bloody nose from that bloody globdamn dodgeball was not uncommon, and she took care of it on the way to her office, stemming the red trickle with practiced ease and checking her nose for breaks. No problems there -- one of these days, though, she was sure, one of her precious tusks would be damaged. She could handle many things, but not her tusks. Oh no, that would lead to some hell, due to be paid.

But for now, she considered the inkblot she'd doodled in ink, pinned up next to her desk. In terms of teeth... didn't the sharp spear-like edges at the corners look sort of teethlike? Not like her beloved tusks, of course, but more like... someone or something about to snip the middle part of the conjoined parts in half.

Why did it fill her with such foreboding? That it looked like it could happen at any moment? So final, so deadly? It was a familiar feeling, the sort of feeling that felt like it should belong in the tidied up ruins of the civisect space tower... Not one she really liked to think about.

Cogs in a machine...

The thought hit her suddenly as Psykgi made her way through the halls. Didn't the inkblot she'd made look a lot like cogs turning in unison in a machine? With the resemblance to her symbol, it made a sort of sense. She wasn't sure what sort of sense, though -- initially, her thoughts had turned to darker things, though, and that bothered her...

She dodged out of the way as a troll was hustled by in a four-wheeled device. She checked after them to see if she needed to care -- not one of her patients, not going towards her wing, thus not in her department -- and then moved on with her thoughts.
