Prompt 4: The Gnat's Guidance

He couldn't remember anything about himself. The gnat in his ear droned annoyingly about ways to go and things to do, all of them completely unimportant because the thing on his mind at the moment, the more pressing matter was that he'd forgotten his name. No matter how many times he flicked or pawed at his ear to quite the little parasite so he could have a clear thinking moment, the insect was unreachable and unsilenceable.

And then there was her. And she had the same problem he did. A part of him desperately wanted to tell her who she was even if he didn't know, anything to make her seem a little less scared. But was that something he'd do? Was that the sort of buck he was? His mind was reeling and fear was creeping in. Maybe thats why her offer seemed so..tinted? Go with her? Who was she? Was that a good idea? A team made sense, they could protect one another, but at the same time, she could just as easily turn around stab him in the back. If they split up, something may happen to her, and it'd be his fault for turning her down. He had the nagging feeling either decision he'd make would bother him for a long time. Taking a deep breath, he decided he'd go it alone.

Prompt 4: Wandering alone, confused as he was, would have been troubling enough without the whiny voice buzzing in his ear. He would manage. He had that much presence of mind. He had come this far, he reasoned, whoever he was, and survived whatever he might have survived to make it, after all. If he could do that much, surely he could continue on, no matter how much his tiny passenger tickled.

The acha, though, she made him uneasy. Wary. Maybe she was an enemy, or a rival, at least. Maybe she was the reason he couldn't remember anything. Maybe she'd led him into trouble before and he'd come here to escape her, only to be caught again. Whatever the case, he didn't trust her. Was that a mistake? He was sure he'd find out soon enough, but he wasn't going to risk her company. He'd go on alone.

User Image Prompt 4
Making his way carefully through the valley, Errant sighed with relief when he finally emerged, grateful to have encountered no unpleasant surprises. Just as he'd begun to think things might start to make sense, he heard a little voice, near his ear. In fact, given that it was accompanied by a faint buzz, he could swear it was a...gnat. Interesting. However, he thought prosaically, no more odd than the rest of this bizarre journey thus far.

It was in this frame of mind that he found himself entering a grove, as promised...whereupon he found he could not recall quite who he was, exactly...just that he was going somewhere...

He wandered for some time, aimless and confused by the seemingly impenetrable row of trees that border the grove. He's brought up short when a slight acha seems to appear before him out of nowhere. Where had she come from, and how had he not noticed her before?

He shrugged at her first question; having no answer, and then nodded in reply to.her following statement. When she asked if he'd like to work with her, he hesitated, picking up on something other than helpfulness in her tone. On the other hand, he couldn't recall who he was, but he did know that the idea of abandoning a lady to potential harm was completely against his nature...so it was with reservation that he finally nodded, making his decision.

"Yes, let's work together, for two heads are surely better than one."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Maple had a nice, easy walk through the valley, and smiled grimly when she caught the echoes of a rushing, frothing river. It was a good thing she hadn't heeded the advice of the Lily, then - she was familiar enough with the flower's mentality to anticipate just such a tactic for revenge. Misinformation was a grand way for someone of lesser physical means to slay their foes...

Then, as Maple Milk neared the end of the valley, she realized she was relating to a talking flower in a dream more than she did most real people. She laughed at the absurdity of it all, shaking her head, and then jumped as that motion drew a tiny protest from someone - "
Hey, watch what you're doin', lady!"

Maple whipped her head to and fro, searching for the source of the voice, but didn't see anyone - or anything - likely to be the source of the voice. She paused and scanned the area more slowly, her one eye wide and searching. Then, she felt something very small nestle into her left ear, and heard the voice again, very close; "
Easy now, easy. Only want to help, you know."

Maple fought the urge to shake her head again, and instead simply twitched the ear. There was nothing touching it outside, but there was definitely something in her ear. Something moving - or, no, it had stopped. Then the tiny, high voice spoke up again - "
There now, nice and settled. We're going to have us a little adventure, missus."

"To where, pray tell," the old doe asked oh her insistent new companion. It sort of brought another insistent, though much larger companion to mind - now why would she think of him? The voice was sort of similar, perhaps, though pitched up quite a bit.

"
There is a grove you should see. Bit of a hike," it started, and Maple sighed. The gnat countered, "Don't you fret, we'll find our way. Eventually. Now just start out that-a-way - no no, little more left. That's the ticket. Onwards, then!"

With little other recourse, Maple set out, following the gnat's instructions, even when it instructed her to steer clear of the first dense strand of trees they met - "
Nothin' good in there, missus," it cautioned, and insisted on that, even though Maple assured it she'd had plenty of experience with denser darkness and bristlier undergrowth. Ah, well.

The actual grove was next, and the trees that surrounded it were ancient, though the branches above were spread thin, like hair spilling across the ground. The trees were bare now, with the slight bite to the air that was normal in the darker half of the year, but it would look fine indeed with the leaves on, thought
- um. Thought... uh - oh dear. Who was it, again?

No no, please, bear with me, this is very important. Who was it, exactly, we've been following? What's the name of that old doe who's wandering in that pleasant little grove, the one eye she has left looking softer than the lines on her face would suggest is typical for her? I mean, she does look like she's rather used to frowning, doesn't she, the poor, shabby old thing. And rather unused to taking care of herself, if the state of her hair and her cracked scales are any indication. What a hard life she must have led until now. At least she looks like she's enjoying herself now, peaceful and carefree for the first time in who even knows how long. We should let her have that, for just a moment. Who knows how long it'll last?

...

She didn't know for how long she circled that grove, but the haggard old doe did know she had somewhere to be, and this place wasn't it. It was pleasant enough to wander around, at least - although the wall of trees around it was perhaps a tad dense. It was fortunate the branches above were so sparse, or it'd probably awfully dark in there! But there was springy moss underhoof, and a small spring, and the weak winter sunlight was cheery, if not terribly warming. It was alright.

Eventually, the stillness of the place did start to bother her, though. This goal she was in search of - the quest she was on - this was very important. The poem had started quiet, but it was pounding in her head now, an urgent beat she had to heed. She wanted to run from here, to seek the end of the verse, but there was nowhere to run, no gaps in the trees, and no way forward no matter where she turned -

And then she turned and found a stranger behind her - or someone who may as well have been a stranger, in any case, with how little the old doe could remember. She was startled, and while she was still silent with shock, the acha who'd found her asked, "Do I know you?"

"I don't believe so," the old doe said, "though I think I wouldn't recognize you even if I did, with the way my mind's been since I came here. Do, ah - do you know me?"

"I don't think so," the acha said, wrinkling her dainty little nose, "but then I wouldn't know, right? It's something about this place, I think. We have to get out of here."

"Definitely," the kimeti nodded, and the acha smiled.

She asked the kimeti, "Do you... want to work together, to find a way out?"

Alarms started ringing in the old doe's ears, in time with the meter of the poem. Something about this doe's tone on that last question had set up red flags for her, though she couldn't think of why. The old doe tilted her head as she briefly considered the acha before her, and the acha's question, and why it should bother her so.

"I think not," the old doe replied at last. "I... I think I am not terribly good with others. Sorry. Good luck," she mumbled, and went back to her searching.

PROMPT 4 RESOLUTION

The grove seems to be a maze: each fork taken driving kin around in circles and back where they started. If there is a way out, after hours of searching, those kin who decided to travel alone will find themselves tired and frustrated.

But those who teamed up will have more success.

Eventually, the strange acha -- frustrated herself, now, scowling a bit with her eyebrows knitted, will turn to you to make a suggestion.

"At the next fork, you'll go right, and I'll go left, and maybe at least one of us will make it out."

You do so, and you emerge from the grove, at long last, your name restored to you.

_________

THE FOLLOWING FOUR PARTICIPANTS HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED:

Please feel free to write an 'exit' post for your kin.
They will be lost forever in the grove, in the dream, walking until they waste away, but will wake up same and sound wherever they fell asleep.

Prompt 5: The Twins

After some time, the kin who opted to go alone think better of their choices, and carefully team up into pairs -- managing to find the trick of their escape and emerge from the grove along with the others. to remember their names. And their quest.

There comes from not too far away a resounding thock that captures your attention and draws you in toward it, as it echoes down from hill, your ears still ringing.

There you will find two young Totoma, horns locked, roaring at each other unintelligibly. After a moment, they will notice your presence and pause long enough to blink up at you, so you can ask what's going on.

"...he stole my seedpot!" says the one, indignantly, his chin lifted. "The one that jingled if you shook it!"

"I did not!" Replies the other, putting his own head down and swiping one forefoot against the ground, apparently ready to charge again. "But I do have my own --"

They ram each other once again, the sound echoing, and you are faced with another choice. Do you break them up? Or do you just sit and watch the show?

_________

OOC INFO:

This an elimination prompt! You must reply to the prompt above in whatever way you'd like., but you must, somewhere in your post, specify if you're going to break up the totoma or sit and watch. PLEASE BOLD YOUR CHOICE.

When you post, please also roll a 20-sided die. In past events, this die has been used to put some members back into the running, even if they choose the wrong fork, so it is to your benefit to do so!

You have until January 7th at 11:59 PM EST to complete this prompt and join in the event [but, realistically, I'll probably accept entries until around noon on the next day. XP].

PROMPT 005

Hesitantly, Blessed approaches the totoma; eyes wide as she watches their brawl. Surely, she would be unable to intervene... though, perhaps she could give aid to whomover should lose the argument? The young kiokote ducks behind a rock, scared to make her presence known. From there, she decides to sit and watch. Perhaps they would come to a more peaceful conclusion, before battering each other further.

Thock.

Giveforward wanders towards the sound, curious and with a pulse of apprehension. It doesn't take long to find the two totoma. It seems to take even less time for them to notice her.

"What's the matter?" she asks, soft.

She winces as their argument once again results into a collision of horns. The urge to help floods into her and she rushes forward to break them up.

He left the Acha behind with a nod and eventually stepped out of the grove and back into his own skin.

The Killing Moon let out a long sigh, looked back once and wondered if the doe would ever find her way and then continued forward.

It didn't occur to him, once he'd found the two Totoma, to try break up their fight. Perhaps if he had been home, watching two tribe members. Yes, definitely then he would have stepped in. Not today. Not here. They didn't belong to him, their fight wasn't his business. They could work it out themselves.

The buck stood and watched.

Well he didn't say that, he just made arrangements to team up and when he escaped, and regained his name, he gasped in the pure pleasure of that moment. He was LUST, that was his name. How could he have ever forgotten it? It made no sense, none at all!

With that, he found himself shaking his head as he headed down the hill in response to that noise. It was almost painful, and he was hoping he could make it stop. When he sees the two Totoma, he pauses, and ponders whether or not to interfere. When they see him, Lust gives an internal shrug, and quietly says "What has caused you to fight so, young kin?" At the explanation, he frowns softly, and watches them fight again, for a moment, before gently stepping forwards. "Perhaps we should break this up and try to find a more amiable solution. Is it possible some one else stole it, knowing you, sir, had a similar one? The idea being to trick you two into fighting?" He was doing his best to get them to back up, as he really wanted to break up their fight. After all, it was giving him a headache.

Well, that had sure been a trip. Web was quite glad for that Acha's help in getting out of there because suddenly he remembered not only his name, but most of his fabulous ideas for this wonderful epic story this strange land could become.

Web walked on, trying to figure out how he could be the hero of such a dastardly maze, and how he had concurred it when a resounding THOCK shook him from his thoughts. He blinked and looked around and came across a pair of Toma. They were squabbling over something. When they noticed he asked them what was going on. It seemed the fight was over a seedpod.

Ah. He did not want to take sides, nor did he want to get between 2 bucks with heads so hard that they would flatten him between their skulls. He decided to sit and watch. Maybe when they tired out they could listen to reason and he would be relatively safe from being crushed between them.

And as quickly as they had met, they had parted ways. Cockerel... that was his name. Cockerel. He shook off the mind fog. He remembered everything again, and suddenly felt less at peace.

Ahead were two Totama fighting. Not thinking, (not that he ever really thought at all, it always made his head hurt) Cockerel charged in to break it up. He was rough and tough and could take a few hits if they bashed into him. He was a hero. This is what he did. He had to save them from each other before something turned fatal. If one brother accidentally killed the other while fighting, it would be the saddest mistake he'd ever made.

Cockerel couldn't imagine living with that guilt. He loved and missed his family too much to sit by and watch as brothers fought.

PROMPT 5: The Twins

A time after Fair Thought had bid the acha doe goodbye she found she once again knew herself and, as vaguely as she’d known before, how and why she was here.

Wondering away from the grove, she thought about the regal white doe that had given her the first direction after she’d awoken with that tune in her head. She wasn’t like the apparitions of this place, there was something more purposeful about her.

Humming the poem’s tune, Fair Though continued on her way, letting her hooves take her where ever they pleased as per usual her mind drifted with the surrounds… Thock!

The dull but loud sound disturbed her thoughts but drew her, curiosity wining out of weariness. She’d just get close enough to have a look, no harm in that. She sees the Totoma and hears of their disagreement. When they return to their fight rather than properly hearing each other out ThoughT thinks to intervene but holds back and merely sits herself down at a saft distance and watches instead.

She’d met maybe only one or two Totoma before but she knew that to seek resolution by conflict was not unusual. Who was she to interfere? Besides, she did not want to get in the way of those powerful horns.

As Dances-With-Doves makes his way out of the grove, the small Acha doe close by his side, his eyes suddenly go wide as he remembers his name, and his quest. He gazes around for a moment, re-orienting himself to the world outside that mind-clouding mass of foliage, but does not leave until he is sure the Acha doe is all right. She seems to have remembered everything, as well. She gives him a grateful smile before bounding off in another direction; their paths must separate here, and he briefly wonders if they'll ever cross again in the midst of this strange dream.

He is quickly distracted, however, by a sudden sound of impact. It turns out to be a pair of young Totoma, apparently fighting over... a seedpot, of all things. It makes no sense to him whatsoever, aggressive though Totoma may be; besides, the fact that they stopped to acknowledge him once gives the Kimeti hope that he may be able to get through to them again. As the two clash again, he sighs and shakes his head at their foolishness. Taking a long, deep breath, he bellows "Stop!" at the top of his lungs, intent on breaking up the fight. He will not step between the two if he can help it, but whether he can get them to talk it out or simply find a way to obtain a second jingling seedpot, he cannot stand there and watch them fight.
