It was the time of year that kin tried to woo the objects of their affection. Spring's first blooms were coming into their fullest blossom, and that meant a bounty of flowers to pick and offer to potential lovers.

Streams of Silver, though, didn't need more than one flower. One flower– the best she could find– would be all that she needed to give to her mate. She was lucky that she'd found him– luckier that he was tolerant of her stubbornness, and that he had enjoyed her company enough to stay with her all this time. Only the best of blooms would do for him– so it stood to make sense that looking for just one would be the best way to go about her task. It would have to be pale– as white as possible, with only the faintest hints of green– something with a long stem and an abundance of leaves, so that it would last as long as possible as a token of her affection towards Gentle Heart. And if she could manage, it would have to be big. Something stunning– something that stated without words to what extent she would go to please him.

There were crowds of love-seekers to contend with at the Magnolia grove– the most reliable place to find impressively-pale blooms. Streams of Silver walked through, looking as kin vied to reach and pull down branches, and strip off as many as they could. She knew this wouldn't work for her– she was far too small to get an easy reach, and she didn't care much for crowds, anyways. After a few minutes, she trotted away, set on finding somewhere else.

The next place she went to was the riverbank. There were plenty of flowers here– but as well as the flowers, there was the mud. She tried to get closer, but the loamy soil quickly became slippery, and she backed away, pausing to scrape the muck from her hooves before heading towards one of the wildflower hills nearby. It would be harder to pick a white one out from the riot of blossoms, but she was patient– and as the day wore on, she'd be hard-pressed to find a better place to look.

There was nothing to do but to forge her way in and start looking, starting at first at one end, forging a straight line, and then another, about a body length away from the first, pausing as she found potential flowers to pick.

When she found the bloom in question, she stopped, taking a minute to scrutinize it... and then a while longer to admire it. Its bracts, its petals– everything about the still-closed blossom indicated that it would bloom perfectly, and the green at its base would surely fade to a nearly perfect, immaculate white. She carefully dug around its roots, carefully grasping her teeth around its base to try to unearth them– and eventually, the tangled ball of dirt and root came loose, with very little ripping.

She didn't stop to shake the dirt off– she'd keep it on, it would make it easier to plant. That done with, she headed off to give it to him. After all, there was no need to take others from other kin who might need more to impress their would-be lovers.

It had been long enough since Clematis had wandered off into the swamp and disappeared on him, leaving him feeling abandoned and lost without him. He'd had one doe turn his head– a fleeting thing, with it cooling into a steady friendship– one he wouldn't change for the world. But this buck was ready for more.

And what better time than now to do it? He picked through the flowers, looking for ones with long stems and still-green blossoms, not yet open. He knew well-enough his flowers to find a few that promised to open beautifully– and give him the time he needed to track someone down to give them to.

This time of year, it was easier to speak without words. She was a green doe, pretty, with butterfly wings etched in her hide– and she had attracted herself more than a few individuals wishing to give her flowers to show their affection. But it was much harder for her to respond to those advances. Body language could only get so far, and a gracious response was nothing more than a polite 'thank you'.

So, she'd set out to find something to give back to someone else. There could be no simpler way to respond– no way harder to misinterpret. Unfortunately, the little doe found herself at a disadvantage– those blossoms that fell were snapped up quickly, had fallen apart or had been stepped on in the eagerness to find a token for someone or another... and those not quite ready themselves were on branches too high for her to reach.

Disappointed by the morning's setback, she wandered back towards the general area of the festivities, set on listening for someplace better to look for pale blooms.
