Intro

The young Squires have faced long hours of training, dangers in the field, and even the doubts of those they struggle to save. The time has come for the true test of their abilities and teamwork.

This thread will be constantly updated. This goes for both rules, as needed, and the summaries of each section as the finale progresses. This is the first time we've done something quite so involved and complicated in the shop, so there are likely to be a few bumps along the way and a few changes to make things run smoother as we go.

Scoring / Rules

From this point forward, all RP will be scored and contribute to the final results of this contest. Scoring will be two-fold. There will be a concrete points system in place, but also a subjective score that is tabulated based on the RP itself. The two will not always necessarily coincide as you may think. Say your Pae'il takes actions that results in them taking points damage to their HP. This is not necessarily only a bad thing...what was the reason behind the choice they made? How do they deal with the results of that choice? This is where subjective scoring comes into play.

Each Squire will need to keep three stats in mind while traversing the challenges. Their health, or HP (hit points), their MP (magic points), and their corruption level. Squires who take damage to their HP may either heal themselves or be healed by their comrades, but at a cost of MP to the spell caster. Any Squire whose HP reaches 0 will die. A Squire's MP is limited, however, and though it will slowly regenerate (2MP recovered between each challenge), the dangers will increase as the Squires progress, so some management may need to be considered. As the danger increases, so will the level of Taint in the environment. Squires are not immune to this and as they progress, they will absorb more and more of the Taint, unless they are cleansed. As their corruption level increases, they will become angrier, more violent, and possibly start turning on their teammates. If this level gets too high, they will succumb to the Taint as a twisted monster, no longer able to control themselves and lost forever (brainless zombie/dead). The challenge will be to balance the use of the Squire's HP, MP, and Corruption level until reaching the end.

***

For subjective scoring, we will be looking at not only the Squire's actions, but their reasons behind those actions. We will also look at OOC factors, such as the player's involvement in the RP, whether they are engaging other players, or simply playing as if this were a 1-player game and only posting the minimal response to prompts. While we understand that some characters may have differing preferences in working with others, as well as consideration for how the situations play out..if one is in a room working on a problem with others, yet does not acknowledge the presence of or interact at all with those others, even in observation, then the RP feels disjointed and more like a single-player Choose-Your-Own-Adventure rather than a group RP. Be sure to read ALL responses so that you have a picture of the whole scene, not just shop prompts! There will be no 'I didn't read' excuses tolerated. These are very long-term roles that will have to communicate regularly with staff to move plot events forward. We're looking for good player attitudes as well as characters who fit into the roles that we need to fill.

Some variables of scoring will be kept secret. However, some important factors to consider are whether the Squire is being played true to the character they've developed thus far in RP, whether they are a good fit for the role of a Knight and leader, and whether the player is enjoying the experience for what it is, or simply going through the motions to finish the contest. These are going to be VERY long-term RP roles to be filled and will require being kept active, even if there are no major events going on, as well as being able to function in these roles without being told what to do every step of the way. Creativity, adaptability, and the ability to work well with others are all very important!

Remember, not everyone is going to make it to Knighthood. Good luck to all and give it your best!

***

Some reminders about the Knights:
  • These are important plot roles that we have been trying to fill for a very long time. We are not going to rush to shove someone into the slot that doesn't fit simply to have it done. We need just the right players for them, so we will not be filling the roles just to have them filled.
  • Knights are required to remain active. We need players who are self-driven, in this for the long haul, and can keep up activity by operating on their own initiative within set guidelines. This means, even if there is no event going on, the players will be responsible for keeping the Knights active and engaged. We will not hesitate to replace any Knight players who cannot fulfill their duties, but we will not be happy to have to do so.
  • As a reminder, Knight players will be controlling IPC leader-level characters and as such will be held to rules similar to RP mods on staff. They must be willing to RP with anyone and cannot allow personal preference to get in the way of RP. They must be impartial, fair, and unbiased with all RP partners.
  • Knights are a major plot role, on the same level of playing a leader, such as Chieftain Rais or Queen Tariel. As such, they are plot-centric first. Their duties must come first. Knights are not breeding fodder and any relationships with other Pae'il will be closely scrutinized. There will be NO breeding allowed unless there is a very strong plot reason that is approved by staff.
  • Moving forward, starting with Part 2, any inactive Squire (meaning anyone who does not respond to the given challenge for that part) will automatically take damage and if they take enough damage for this reason to reach 0, their Squire will perma-die.

  • We understand that three years is a long time for an RP contest to go on. Life changes and the available time and energy that we have for side diversions can change drastically. If at this point you believe you cannot or do not wish to take on the responsibilities of a Knight player, but are only continuing to compete because you do not wish to lose the character you have developed and grown to love, please let us know. We do not want to put anyone into a role they do not want...and if you have worked so hard to reach this point, we would not want that to go to waste either. Please PM Guardian Iris and let us know, so that Antidia and Teigra can discuss alternative options with you. In short, we are allowing the original Squire players who are still active to opt out of competing for Knighthood in exchange for their Squire's continued survival. We would prefer to know this before the final phase of the finale starts, preferably before we start Part 3 in Winter 2016, but as Part 2 is beginning shortly, the sooner we know, the better.

Battle Rules, Stats, and Current Standings

Battle Start!

Battle Rules
  • Battles will be broken into rounds and each round will give players approx. 48 hours to respond. Please check the deadline on the round prompt! That is the amount of time you have in order to roll and post your RP response or else it wont count.
  • Only one roll per round! Any extra rolls may be seen as an attempt to cheat and could have you ejected from the event. You're more than welcome to post multiple times in a round, but may only roll for your attack once. If you do accidentally double post your roll post, DO NOT DELETE IT. We will take the first number rolled and ignore the second. If you delete your post, however, we will automatically be forced to assume this was done in order to cheat. Don't do it.
  • If you posted and forgot to roll with the post, you may post again to roll. We're not concerned about having a blank post just to roll for your previous post. Don't worry about it.
  • Feel free to roll before writing your post so you can work your response around your roll, but be sure to get your post done within the allotted time. Any that roll, but do not post will not have their damage counted. On top of that, the enemy will auto-target you for not participating in the battle and seeming like an easy target to get rid of first.
  • If you miss a prompt, your Squire's Dex will be ignored for that round. If a Squire does not post at all for a round, it is assumed they are not paying attention and will be unable to dodge any hits that round.
  • This first round we will be helping you learn the battle system, but we still need you to add your roll information to your post. Your base damage + roll + any other information you may be adding (special attacks, crit bonus damage, etc.). Have this at the top of your post in red. This is as much for us to see the final count as much as for you to understand how all the numbers work. (See the example at the bottom of the post.)
  • This is a battle for your life so it's important to stay on top of your stats. Be wise in your MP usage. Don't fling healing, taint cleansing, or your other abilities like candy, but don't hoard them either. It's a tricky balance that can really be resolved with teamwork - each member asking and giving help when needed.
  • No complaining about stats. We have taken a lot of time working on stats for each player that works for their character. Plus the fact that some stats come from player's hard work and participation in prior RPs. You have gotten what you have for a reason. (If you see a legitimate issue with any of the stats do feel free to bring it up in a kind manner to a staff member.)

Battling Details
Full Squire Stats and Powers Sheet
(Use the tabs at the bottom to navigate to the different sections.)

The Stats
Attack: This is the amount of melee damage you deal.
Defense: This is how much damage you can handle/absorb. This amount will be subtracted from any damage done to you.
Magic: This is the amount of magic damage you deal.
Dexterity: This is how agile your character is. Your opponent has to roll a number higher than this amount or else your character dodges the attack.
CRIT BONUS: This is an additional amount of damage you add on top of your attack when you roll a critical.

Battle Basics
Each Squire will roll a 1d10 to start their attack. What you roll will determine if your attack lands or not, based on your opponents dexterity. If their dexterity is a 4 and you roll a 7, then it lands. Anything 4 or lower will not land your attack!

So, you rolled that 7 and it passed the dexterity check. That 7 will be added to your base magic or attack amount depending on if you used a melee or magic move in your RP response. If you have a magic base of 5, then your total damage inflicted is 12.

This doesn't mean the being takes 12 damage though. Every being has a certain amount of defense. So, you attack for 12 points, but the being has a defense of 4. This means you only hit them for 8 damage.

Sample Attack
Squire 1 rolls a 5! Since his opponent's dexterity is 3 that means his attack lands. Squire 1's base attack stat is 6 so he adds it to the 5 he rolled and gets 11 damage. The beast has a defense of 4 meaning he only loses 7 health.

Crit Chances
If you roll a 10, you've landed a critical hit! Take a look at your bonus magic or attack damage and add that to your total, depending on what kind of attack you landed a critical with.

Example: Your Squire lands a 10 while using a melee attack. Their attack base is 4 meaning they get a crit bonus of 2 (you can check the stats above to find your crit bonus). This means you get the chance to inflict 10+4+2 = 16 damage points!

Corruption
Last of all, this is a tainted area and there may be tainted beasts you're fighting. Some of their attacks will begin to corrupt your Squire, so keep a watch on your Corruption meter. 1 – 4 taint points is the safe zone; 5 – 8 you should start feeling a surge of rage and unbalance, possibly lashing out/attacking your own teammates; 9 - 10, your Squire has succumbed to the taint. This means that your Squire is little more than a mindless beast at this point and might as well be dead (and counts as such). If you start heading into the danger zone, be sure to get cleansing quickly!

At the end of each part listed below, the Squires will slowly be corrupted by the surrounding Taint of Dragnid. They will have to pause to cleanse and heal themselves from time to time as a result. The amount of corruption absorbed by the Squires at the end of a chapter from the Taint alone will escalate as the Squires progress deeper into the fortress. In addition, we will add any damage they took from traps, attacks, or otherwise during that chapter. We will post to notify you on your levels of taint and we expect you to RP them accordingly - or reach out for help!

MP Costs
After each chapter, each Squire will regain 2 MP (up to their maximum MP). The costs of their common spells* are as follows:
  • Holy Aegis - 1 MP
  • Light Lance - 1 MP
  • Cleanse - 2 MP
  • Pure Light - 2 MP
* Some Squires may have additional/special costs for their unique abilities.

Special spells, ones that are specific to each Squire, can only be used once in each 'chapter', 'part', or 'room' of this event.

Example post
At the top of your post, we will need to see your attack's numbers in red. So, to start, check the dexterity amount of the monster you are attacking and look at your dice. If you have rolled an amount lower than their dexterity put at the top "Enemy dodged!" and that will be the end of your calculations for that round.

If your dice is a higher number than the enemy's dexterity then the attack lands. Add your base attack or magic damage + your dice roll = damage amount. So it should look like:

(base damage + roll = damage amount)
8 + 6 = 14

From here staff will take these numbers and compare them to the enemy's defense and come up with the total amount of health taken off of them. At the same time the enemy will attack and do damage to your Squire. At the end of the round we will display the amount of health removed from each player and any taint affects that have taken place. The round after you will have the chance to heal any affects or keep on fighting.

Part 1 - Bastion of Flame

Summary
Loyal followers of the Light, sent on missions for the Guardians, met with misfortune while on the Isle. Two Pae'il, Malek and Kurt, as well as the Squires' Knight Trainer, Lord Andrei, were taken by hostiles and have gone missing. Intel points to the fortress deep within Dragnid Forest where the hostages are being held. Though, no demands have yet been made for their safe return...

Protectors of the Guardians' faithful and enforcers of their wishes, the Squires of the Order of the Light are summoned to go on a rescue mission. Armed with the elemental protection tokens they were asked to collect, the Squires are sent into the heart of Dragnid Forest. Their mission: to infiltrate the fortress, rescue the hostages, then get out. Their preparation would protect them from the outer defenses, but inside...there was little intel on what they might find within.

The operation did not start smoothly. Some of the Squires had not gathered the requested protection tokens and as a result, triggered some of the traps in the courtyard leading into the fortress. A little worse for wear, but nothing a couple healing spells couldn't fix, the Squires regrouped on the other side and prepared to enter the fortress.

Just inside what appeared to be an ancient checkpoint, disaster struck. The traps outside hadn't been their only concern. The archway behind them was suddenly blocked by thick metal spikes. And they were coming towards the group of young Squires.

They were forced to sprint to the end of the long hallway, the deadly trap following in their wake. Some were not quick enough to make it out in time. Three Squires were trapped in the hallway, impaled upon the spears. Their companions were forced to look on helplessly as those young Squires they grew up alongside were cut down with nothing they could do to stop it. Given a brief period to rest and recoup, the Squires would soon have to press on with their reduced numbers...

Part 2 - Quelling the Fire

Summary
With no time to mourn their fallen comrades, the Squires must push on...

The group made their way into the looming structure ahead, not without some hesitancy. The loss of their comrades was enough to put them all on edge to what was to come. As they entered, a small, fuzzy being was alerted to their presence and made its escape through the mighty door before them. When the Squires followed, they found themselves in a dark room. The only thing to be seen was a giant stone table dominating most of the space. Though it looked large enough to hold many Pae, the thick layer of dust was a sign of its lack of use.

At the end of the table sat a massive stone chair with a much older, fuzzy being lounging within it. He was obviously displeased by the Squire's presence when he demanded they exit his castle immediately, despite the door slamming shut behind them. One Squire found themselves trapped outside of the room and without his comrades to help him. Soon, sounds of a fierce battle could be heard behind the door. Within the room, Alethea's response enraged the fuzzy being and he summoned forth a pair of taint beasts to 'deal' with the intruders.

The battle was hard fought, some Squires taking the brunt of the attacks while others surprised themselves with the power of their own attacks. Training could only prepare them for so much, but in the end, they came out victorious against their first group of beasts. Sadly, Nephi, who was trapped outside the room, did not fair so well against the beast released on him. When the battle ended, the door was released revealing his battered body.

The beasts knew they had been bested. With what little strength they had left they ran off into the darkness after their master. They were last seen slipping through a door on the other end of the room. Would the Squires pursue their attackers?
