The night was dark and clear and cold; winter had struck and had lingered across the lands, leaving its bitter chill in the air. The trees swayed and cracked with ice on their limbs under a spotless black-ink sky. And beneath that sky was a foal--small in stature with spindly, awkward legs and a serpentine tail that flicked to and fro along with the ticking of time.
Ciaran stood on the hill at the edge of the forest, looming dark and dangerous, but the foal seemed numb to his surroundings. His pupilless eyes moved along the shadows, but not his shadow--his shadow was at rest, the monster lurking there slumbering now that the sun was down. Night was freedom from Fear. Night was safe time.
His tail skittered along the ground, drawing fine lines in the hard earth. His wings were kept close to his body for warmth and he was watching something small and fury, trapped below one tiny hoof. A young raccoon blinked up at him with panicked black eyes, squealing and chattering in anger. Ciaran's head cocked right, then left, like a curious cat. His ears flicked, a wide smile spreading across his face as he let the raccoon go...only to pounce it a moment later, knocking it back down.
It was obvious there was something not quite...right with the hybrid colt. Not that you could prove it by him...
