When Candy decided to open her own shop, it became quite the undertaking for the freshly Old Enough mare. She had to take out loans, hire architects, and figure out just how she wanted the place to look when it as all said and done. Then came the interior designers. And the furniture shopping. All of this added up to a very poor, but very happy Candy Dandy when she finally opened the doors to her edible arrangement shop.
That was two months ago. Now she was putting on the finishing touches to her typical menu of items available for baskets. She was currently pouring over a long list of items, humming to herself and occasionally crossing something off. elvyralani Sorry it's so short! I hope it still works!

Rock Sugar had no idea where to start. Absolutely no idea on how to go about making candy and such. He was good at reading though, so he started there. The colt was able to find a book about candy but not making it. There had to be books about it, there had to be. The second difficulty was how to start. Rock hadn't any of the tools to do what he wanted to do. The foal did have another book on images of what he wanted to make. It was a friend who told him about the shop owned by Candy Dandy. With a name like that she had to know something! Rock approached the shop, slowly opened the door and poked his head in.

The bell above the shop door jingled, causing Candy to look up from her list. Her smile lit up her eyes, and she said "Well hello there!" she said, dropping the pen from her mouth gently. She came from behind the counter to greet the youngster.
"Come on in!" she said, coaxing Rock Sugar in "I know it doesn't look like much, but I promise we are open!"

The bell almost startled him but his mind was already in a different place. There was so many neat things in this store. The mare had stated there wasn't much there but to him it was wonderful. Slowly he trotted in and took it all in. Awesome. "T-thanks. It's a wonderful shop."

Candy smiled at his wonder. "Well thank you! I'm glad you like it. That means when it is all said and done, even more phonies will like it!"
"I'm Candy Dandy! You can call me just Candy if that's too long to remember. What ca I do for you?" She paused when the foal got close enough that she could get a real good look at him. His rump seemed to have...growths on it.What's more, the unicorn horn that poked out from his fluffy mane was...was it a spiral? How odd! She stared for a moment, then shook her head quickly. It was rude to stare!

It was truly wonderful, even if it wasn't completely finished yet. The foal just smiled a bit and looked away shyly. He was used to being stared at, he hadn't seen any other phonies with growths like his (besides his siblings of course). Her name was Candy, how appropriate! "Rock Sugar is my name. I'm looking for supplies, or, uh..." He wasn't sure how to ask what he wanted. Help? These things interested him but where was he to start. "Books, well not like book books, but advice maybe." He was rambling, he didn't realize that though.

"Well hello there Rock Sugar!" Candy said, and let him ramble for a bit. Then she smiled, knowingly and said "Well, advice I can give for sure! And probably even supplies, as long as they are for making food." She certainly didn't have anything like woodworking tools!
"How about we start with some advice." she went on to say, gesturing to one of the tables that had chairs around it. She took a seat, and leaned her head on her hooves. "What do you want to know about?"

The pink mare seemed so nice and eager to help! He had totally gotten a head of himself and didn't even mention what he was there for! Rock took the offered seat across from Candy. "Candy of course! I was hoping to find out how to learn about making candy." He had to stop himself from getting ahead of himself here. Start simple and then get into more questions later.

"Candy. Well that's a pretty big subject in itself." She said, rubbing a hoof along the edge of the table, checking for splinters while she thought.
"I assume that given your name, sugar is a good place to start." she said with a smile and a wink. "I would say, if you're making things with sugar, be sure to watch your temperature very closely. That goes for chocolate actually too. If you let it get too high, it'll burn and then it just tastes funny." Candy's memory hearkened back to the days when she burnt many a pot of sugar trying to make caramel.

The foal grinned a bit, sugar was indeed a place he wanted to start with. Rock Sugar pulled a small notebook out of his bag and a pencil as well. He opened up to the first page and started to write. "Sugar, watch temperature." He scribbled into the book. Rock nodded and made the note about chocolate, his face scrunched up a bit thinking about brunt chocolate. "That doesn't sound like it would taste good at all!" "What's your favorite thing to make?"

"My favorite thing to make?" she said, looking over at her list of items on the wall available for arrangements. "Hmmm I'd have to say that my favorite thing to make would be fruit flowers. You take the fruit, and cut it a certain way so that it fans out like flower petals" She moved her hooves around, trying to imitate the way that the fruit unfolded. "With some, you can cut them with cookie cutters and put them on toothpicks to make them stand upright."
"Plus." she added. "You can take things like strawberries and mangoes and dip them in chocolate. Watermelon can be coated in sugar to give it a snap to go with the softness of the fruit."
She realized she was rambling, and chuckled. "What about you? What kinds of things have you made so far?"

His gazed followed hers to the list on the wall. What an impressive array of items! Flowers out of fruit, that was brilliant. "Cool! Was it hard to learn? I bet you have to be super intricate and detailed." Rock was very impressed with her knife skills to be able to do such a thing. The foal really liked the idea of taking something and making it look like something else. His head was already spinning with ideas. Into his notebook with the ideas of fruit flowers, dipping things in chocolate, and sugar on watermelon. "I've been trying to make candy. Sugar in the shape of crystals. Things shaped in chocolate." Beginners stuff he found in books mostly.

"It was hard to learn. I had to experiment with what tastes blended well and which colors look nice. Plus some plants, like mint, have a specific time of year when they are the best, and some don't dry well." She realized that, despite not being the brightest phony in the park, she did have an extensive knowledge of certain things. She felt a twinge of pride.
"I mostly use cookie cutters to make the fun shapes." she admitted sheepishly. "I can't really carve very many things yet."
"Chocolate shapes are easiest to make if you use parchment paper." she said, not knowing if he had read that already. "Oh and the room has to be cold. It's uncomfortable, but it keeps the chocolate form beginning to melt."
Her hoof tapped on the table as she thought. "Sugar in the shape of crystals huh? Never tried that before. How does one do that?"

Rock was so excited he had met this mare today, her knowledge of candy and such made her one of the coolest people he knew. "It's all about lots of practice then. I'll have to get more supplies then so I can practice even more!" Practice made perfect right? More notes to take down, awesome! "Parchment paper, got it." He was so impressed by how much she knew off the top of her head. "Well, I found it in a book and followed the directions. I did have to boil some sugar in water, poured that in a jar and stuck a stick in it. It took days of waiting for the crystals to grow." It was almost for like a science experiment.

"Practice! Exactly!" She was glad that almost everything she said could boil down to just that.
She tilted her head as he described the rock sugar. So..you turned it from a solid, to a liquid, then back to a solid again? And it grew on the stick? That's so cool!" She said, tossing her hooves in the air. "I SO have to try that! It's like magic!"
She calmed herself, then asked "Is there anything else you want to know? I have a couple books you can borrow about chocolate if you'd like."
