<< THE MOON RISES >>
The seer Burning Bush tells a story on the night of a lunar eclipse.
◈◈◈
Quote: One day the moon dropped into the swamp. In the sky, where the moon had once hung, there was a large gaping hole. The stars became confused without the moon to guide them. Without the moon, the sun too felt lonely and the night dragged on. Without the moon, the night was no longer a time of calm rest and respite and dark things started to prowl the swamp. Demons, specters, ghosts and shadows crawled through the dark hole in the sky and descended upon the swamp.
"We must find the moon!" The kimeti cried. Yet the swamp was so big, what could they do? Determined, several went out to the farthest reaches of the swamp in search of the moon. But none could find the moon. Those who came back, came back empty handed, and most did not return at all. It was as if the darkness had swallowed them whole. They began to worry, to fret and panic. They even split. Thinking only of themselves, the kimeti scrambled away to hide and protect themselves. Having given up the search for the moon, the darkness encroached.
The shadows grew more and more numerous, and kimeti started disappearing one by one. Many were worried, but many more were scared. And it continued like so for many days, until, finally, it could not go on any longer. The kimeti came together again at the Ghost Thistle Mound and stood in silence. After a long period of silence, a lone buck stood up and asked what they were doing.
"Are we going to hide until the shadows eat us one by one? No, we cannot, we must not! We must find the moon."
"But how?" The other kimeti asked. They had tried before, but to no avail. "Haven't we done that before? Won't we just die?"
"No," the buck said, "before, those who were lost went alone, but this time we will go in pairs."
"But how will we know if someone has found the moon? Or what will happen if both kimeti get lost?"
"How about a songbird," a young doe suggested. "They can comunicate in the darkness. A songbird's song reaches farther than any of our voices. If one group finds the moon, then the songbird can sing to tell the rest, and the other songbirds will return the song until it spreads across the entire swamp."
The kimeti nodded in agreement. Those who had songbird companions ventured forward and offered their familiars. Kimeti paired up and vanished into the darkness in search of the moon.
In the end, they found the moon hiding in the depths of a pool. The songbird's song reached the other groups and they came together to pull the moon from the waters and throw her back into the sky. With the moon back in its rightful place, the shadows slowly disappeared. Many of those who were lost made their way back, but others were lost forever. Perhaps they are still walking in the shadows of the swamp.
"Perhaps you doubt my story, but I have dreamed of the future and have seen darkness. That is what the swamp has told me; the future is uncertain. But I know one thing, the times have changed, and the age where we wander alone is over. From now on, we must live together with each other and the swamp. Or we too will be swallowed by the darkness."

<< GATHER ROUND THE FIRE >> The fire glows steadily in the center of the clearing. If you look closely, there seems to be something moving slowly in the midst of the flames, but no, that is impossible. Probably just a trick of the light.
Quote: The clearing is large, on the fringes of territory that has been claimed by clan Westfen. The swamp grass grows thick, and the nearby waters are pristine. The assembled kimeti stand roughly in a circle. At the head are three kimeti. One is a white buck, streaked with an underbelly of yellow and red. Another is a doe, with an outcropping of deep green hair. But the kimeti who occupies the center stage, indeed the one who the majority seem to be focused on, is a doe of black. Fire streaks across her flanks like fire amongst coal. She stands at the head and speaks out to the gathering.Westfen is hosting a festival under the lunar eclipse, and you are all invited! A fire burns in the center of the clearing. It is a night competitions and story sharing. Perhaps you have heard of the Clan and wish to know more? Perhaps you are from another tribe come to meet Westfen? Perhaps you are a wandering kin who has stumbled upon the gathering? It matters not. Anyone and everyone (even non-kimeti!) are welcome to join Westfen's festivities. And what's more, it seems like the apprentices have returned from their pilgrimages. What could they have brought?

Quote: PILGRIMAGE When an apprentice is deemed ready, their mentor will send them on the Pilgrimage. The mentor and the friends and family of the apprentice often give them gifts for the journey. The Pilgrimage is the adulthood-ceremony of Clan Westfen. The apprentice leaves the clan territory and ventures out into the swamp, not to return until they find something of value to bring back to the clan. Value has many different meanings, and apprentices bring back all sorts of things, some tangible, some not. Some brings songs and stories, some bring information, some bring herbs or kill, some bring bone, and some bring other kimeti. When the apprentice finds something to bring back to the clan, they present it to the Clan Head and are accepted back into the clan -- but not yet as a full adult, first they must go through The Long Night.
Quote: THE LONG NIGHT Upon returning from their Pilgrimage, the apprentices bring their find/contribution to the Clan Leader. If the contribution is acceptable, then they are sent out into the clan lands, normally to the farthest reaches, without any food. Some seek a Seer, some stare into the Blackwater for answers, others just wander. It's said that after a day of walking through the land, that night the apprentices will have a dream. When they wake and return to the Clan, they return as fully-fledged clan members (Hunter/Gatherer/Builder/Healer).
