    xxxxAbout the Professor:
Professor Jasper Ichabod Marcs-Conroy (only goes by Professor Marcs), was born to a pureblood witch and wizard. His father came from a banking family full of loan sharks and his mother came from a family of seers and prophets. He of course soon became the failure of his parents as he turned out to be a squib. His Grandmother Marcs a seer from him mother's side took pity on him and adopted him from his parents.

Grandmother Marcs was adamant that Jasper learned the arts of prediction to his limitations as a squib and receive a reputable muggle education. As Jasper began his education in Mathematics of Random Systems he took two Adult Education Courses during his summer. He easily scored an O in Arithmancy which he felt was little different than the predictions muggles make using statistics, and an E in Ancient Runes which he found a bit more difficult for his mathematically inclined mind.

In 2048, Jasper completed his DPhil Mathematics of Random Systems CDT and with his choice of Universities he chose to began a professorship at the University of Sydney. His time was quite successful for ten years where he was beloved by his students, noted for his research, and soon to be selected for tenure before a conflict with a fellow professor regarding the quality of the other professor's work ended with Jasper being requested to leave the university to hide any controversy.

Until Jasper started with Hogwarts, he worked as an arithmancer working from his apartment in London.

The Arithmancy classroom is one of the smaller classrooms in Hogwarts as the subject does not require much space for instruction and the class sizes tend to be smaller. In the front of the classroom is a large chalkboard with a small desk and rolling desk chair. The words "No Wands Out in this Classroom" are etched in the board with chalk for so long that only a scrugify charm could remove the words. In the back of the classroom is a book shelf with several books of reference for the subject that students are allowed to come into the classroom when class in not in session to use for homework if they so wish. If a student wishes to check out a book they are expected to check out the book using a ledger book on top of the book shelf.

Jasper had already written notes on the board for his class and a bold, underlined note that was a constant for his chalkboard: "No Wands Out in this Classroom". Jasper waited for his students to come in as the Chalkboard's notes also waited.

                                                        Chalkboard
                                                        Compatibility using Arithmancy

ANY name or word can be converted to a number using arithmancy, By doing this we can discover hidden kinships between people, places, and things. Things with the same character number go together.

For example: My mother's character number is 4 and the item name ham can be reduced to 4. It goes to reason that for my mother a breakfast including ham is better suited to her than bacon ( an 8 ).

                                                        Lucky Days

Arithmancy is useful to find days that are best suited for starting new endeavors such as starting a business or getting married. Days with the same number or reduced number as one's character number are considered one's lucky days.

For example: My mother's character number is 4. The 4th, the 13th, or the 22nd are the luckiest days for my mother and she is more likely to be successful in all she does on those days.

"Good afternoon class," Jasper greeted once his students took their seats. "I am Professor Marcs and I have obviously taken over teaching Arithmancy. I would like to congratulate you on passing your preliminary exams in this course and thank you for continuing this fascinating though at times a bit complex subject."

"This year we are focusing on Compatibility Calculations and reviewing in more complexity what you have learned so far. To save everyone time I would like to begin with your course material. Today we are going to begin to touch on calculating compatibility using arithmancy. As you can see on the board anything name or word can be converted to a number using arithmancy. Even a slice of toast has a character number. That number is three, by the way. When two character numbers match it is considered a kinship between the two people, places, and even things."

"As we proceed on this subject you will note lucky days which can also be calculated using one's character number. My mother's character number is 4 and her lucky days are the 4th, the 13th, and the 22nd. In fact my mother met my father on the thirteenth of October and as they are still together perhaps the strength of my mother's lucky day overcame the black mark of the number 13. I still would not risk sitting at a table of that number,"
Jasper added with a small smile. He was a superstitious man. Granny Marcs was sure he had "common sense" which was warding off all bad luck and evil from never leaving a mirror in a sick person's room to never whistling at night.

"For the rest of class I would like you to work on finding compatibility between yourself and someone else. It can be a significant other but it doesn't have to be, it can be a close friend or family member or even a pet if you wish," Jasper ended, "I will be coming around to help check your work or answer any questions."

On the board stood Jasper's ever constant warning: "No Wands Out in this Classroom".

Jasper had reached a point of his teaching where he felt a bit of not quite sadness and not quite joy. Perhaps it was nostalgia? The students of Arithmancy IV had been given the gift of solid core of the art of Arithmancy and now they would go forth practicing with what they have learned.

Jasper had already written on the board mastered subjects for his students:

Jasper stood as his last students found their seats. "Today we will be practicing and reviewing the subject material from this years and what you should have mastered for your OWLs. Let us start with a question, what are the differences in finding a character, heart, or social number? I don't need to know what they are for this, I need to know how to find them."
