Kara looked out over the water as she sighed aloud.
"The water looks great today, sis. Are you ready?" Kara said as she turned towards Lila. Lila had just finished putting on her snorkeling gear.
"Heck yeah! I can't wait to find that fabled pink reef barnacle!" She pumped her fist in excitement. Kara smiled brightly and then put her snorkeling gear on.
The waves of WaiWai, a tropical island paradise, crashed upon the public side of the beach. Laughter and the sound of seagulls echoed into the secluded sea cave where the girls prepared for their swim.
"Alright! Let's go." Kara said as she popped the snorkel into her mouth. Lila had dived first with her arms outstretched; Kara followed in kind and propelled herself through the water after her sister. Swimming was almost as easy as walking on land for the sisters.
Kara caught up to her sister in the water. They waded slowly for a little while and searched for the beginning of the reef. The coral reef was about 175 feet away from the shoreline and public beach.
A school of fish shimmered along passed on the girls' right as they swam around the reef. The water was clear and the sun shone through to light up the pink and orange coral around the reef. Lila looked over and gave Kara a thumbs up signal.
With a gasping breath as her head broke through the surface of the water, Kara looked toward Lila who had just taken the snorkel piece out of her mouth.
"I remember the book said that the special species of barnacle is a dozen feet away from the north edge of the reef." She began as the waded in the water, her feet several inches above the sea floor. "This is going to be so cool!" Lila dove back into the water and began swimming at full speed.

Lila and Kara swam through the ocean on a search for the fable pink sea barnacle. Since it was fabled, Lila and Kara only knew of the general location of the barnacle, if it even existed at all. The sisters found information online of the barnacle's location and the reason it was so rare. The reason the barnacle was rare was because only three had existed in the world and all three were formed when a thousands years in the past when the Moon Goddess split the ocean into seven different seas. The land that was blocking the oceans from touching so long ago broke off small fragments of pink and these fragments were plunged into the ocean. These barnacles had kept themselves alive for centuries; that was the coolest thing that the sisters had ever heard! If the barnacle really did exist, they had to be the first ones to find it and domesticate it!
With the snorkel gear the girls were equipped with, they only expected to do a small search on the surface of the water. They both had expected to see at least a flash of pink glisten on the water from the barnacle. Both Lila and Kara had made their way to the supposed location of the barnacle and scanned the area. Lila searched around the sides of rocks and other sea fixtures while Kara inspected the sands. Kara looked over to Lila and signaled to break to the surface. Following Kara's lead, Lila broke the surface of the water with Kara and they both removed their snorkels.
"Lila, I just saw a rare fish down there!" Kara explained while gasping for air. Lila sighed after she took a deep breath.
"You do realize we are supposed to find a barnacle not a fish, right?"
"Well, yes! But this fish was huge and very glittery. You know how I can't resist looking at shiny things!" Kara explained as she waved her arms around. Lila signed out again when she noticed that the water was getting warmer.
"Girl, is it just me or have we somehow found a hot tub in the middle of the sea?" Lila asked Kara. As Kara began to speak, Lila looked down to find a small pink light glistening from deep into the waters.
"Girl, Girl, Girl! Look! Look, look, look!!" Lila excitedly pointed down into the water. "We have to go get our wet suits! Ready? Race ya!" Lila spoke so fast that she already started swimming to shore before Kara heard it all.
"Wait! I call the mermaid-sequin, er, really shiny mermaid suit!" Kara screamed after Lila and both headed back to the shore.

The two girls sped through the water as fast as their legs could kick. They were lean and able to swim better than most of their peers, so their reached the shore fairly quickly.
Due to the excitement of the discovery, the sisters suited up for their dive quickly and jumped back into the water.
"Okay! Follow me. I took a mental picture of where the barnacle is!" Lila said as she waded in the water, waiting for Kara to fix her mermaid-sequin diver's suit around her legs.
"Got it! Follow you." Kara responded and the girls covered their eyes with their snorkel and shot through the water. it took little time to find the spot where they had spotted the pink sparkle.
It was several feet down below, but the water was super clear and made the pink sparkle. The barnacle was hard to see from the surface of the water so Lila gave Kara the sign to resurface for a talk.
"Blast it! I can't see it from up here. Let's take a dive and get a closer look." Lila lowered her face in the water just enough to find the exact stop of where the barnacle was. It was directly below their kicking feet.
"O-okay!" Kara said as she watched her sister dive first. Following in suit, Kara thrust herself downward.
As they got closer, the barnacle shone even brighter. It was surprising because the surface was several feet above; the light seemed unnatural. Lila floated right above the fabled pink legend and stared at it intently. Kara came closer as well. Their two faces about a foot apart both hovered right about the pink barnacle. For some reason, the girls both felt inclined to touch the sea creature at the same time. However, before they felt the barnacle, all of the sand around the pink light started to shift and ripple. The barnacle itself began throbbing and shot out several puffs of air.
It surprised the girls, causing them to swim upwards. However, the pink barnacle began to quickly rise through the sand. the force of the motion sent the girls reeling back, doing what look like water somersaults.
When the girls were able to regain their normal float in the water, they saw something they never thought they would see; a giant octopus-like pink creature rising in the water. It's tentacles appeared sharp as they lashed about in the water.
Frightened, the sisters began swimming away from the creature, barely holding their breath. It was futile. No matter how hard they kicked, the creature seemed to suck back in with incredible force.
Lila and Kara began to panic and flail and thrash in a desperate attempt to escape.
Suddenly, one of the sharp tentacles lashed out at Kara, wrapping her stomach in a tight squeezing sensation. She already had trouble holding her breath, the squeezing did nothing to help. Kara kicked at the tentacle as hard as she could, but the creature used another of its many tentacles to grip her ankle. It gripped so tight that Kara could feel the cracking of her joints as it pulled on her leg with a strength too hard for her. The pain sent her over the edge of clear-thinking. Kara screamed, releasing the rest of the air she had in her lungs. She could feel the water blocking all airways; she felt her consciousness slipping away.
