It's easier to turn a blind eye to the darkness, than to acknowledge the existence of those whom lurk within it.

There is a light

Lillian was standing behind the benches at the front of the Church – the Choir was performing hymns during morning Mass on a Sunday. It was organised in such a way that the oldest (and tallest) children were singing at the back, with the younger children stood in the middle, and the nursery children were standing in front.

She smiled as she sang; she could see her younger sibling, Evangeline, in the front row. It had been almost a year since Pastor Abbot had taken the two girls in, and since then, the two girls had found comfort and enjoyment in attending and singing in the Choir. It made things feel almost back to normal again. Evangeline had been particularly struck by the...incident. So it brought Lillian immense joy to see her younger sister sing with a bright smile.

The church hall was full with the voices of many worshipers, all standing with their hymn books in hand. It was a wonderful and peaceful community which joined each and every Sunday without fail. As they finished their final song, Lillian listened intently to the Pastor's words; words which promoted kindness. He told the tale of the Good Samaritan – a favourite of Evangeline's.

Lillian could see why; her sister seemed to radiate selflessness.

Evangeline was a little sister that any older sibling would take great pride in. Any well-raised older sibling, anyway. There were far too many rebels trying to cause trouble in their quaint town; it concerned her.

After Pastor Abbot had finished speaking, he dismissed the church-goers and reminded them of the charity box at the entrance of the church. He then approached the Choir and smiled.
“You all did exceptionally well today. Without you, I don't think Sundays would be as cheerful as they often are.” He said with a sincere expression, looking to Lillian with a particular fondness. After having taken the two girls from such a terrible situation, it was astonishing to see how much the two had personally developed. He was certainly impressed.

“Thank you,” Lillian replied graciously, “But your talks are very inspirational.”

“Nonsense, we are a community. Everyone's contribution counts.” he patted the girl's shoulder before smiling at the group of young children pooling around his feet. Petting their heads, he congratulated them on their efforts. Such would allow them to grow in confidence.

Lillian smiled to herself as Evangeline rushed back to her, taking her wrist in both of her small hands.

Life had become much better since then.

Much better.

The young child's attention, however, soon turned to a bald man with writing, which resembled tattoos, all over his skin. Curious, she released her older sister's hand and began to tottle towards him - in spite of Lillian's protests.

"Evangeline! Wait!" She rushed after the child, who was now staring rather intently at the man, standing besides him with wide-eyed wonder. The older girl observed the tattooed man and grew alarmed. He seemed the type that could easily snap a man in half if his temper was pushed.

"Evangeline, don't be rude...don't stare at people." She scolded, giving the intimidating man an apologetic look. "Sorry, sir. My sister is still getting the hang of stranger danger, you know?" Lillian gave a nervous laugh.
