I'm on the right track to find the post I'm thinking of. but i've gotta run. This post will be edited later. i thought i had a bit more time. oops.

i'll bring the post to you guys though since there's a ton of dribble to sift through. XD It's soooo not worth reading a bunch of rants to find the posts by people who speak just facts.

I think the post was in this thread though. will grab it later.

It's tragic because this is kinda..... I don't even know how to say it, the final nail in the coffin for me? I've been on the fence about going into a semi-active state for a while now and this might push me over because I'm tired of all the unnecessary BS. The gold gens, the dozens of cash shop related announcements we're getting every day, and now going after a user-run service that has existed for over 10 years just because they're advertising another site?

The Gaia that I loved is just..... gone. It's nothing like it used to be. It started a nosedive in 2014 and I've pretty much given up hope that it's ever going to recover.

As for creating something similar? I strongly doubt it- Gaia has come right out and stated that they're not interested in working on features that can't turn a profit, so if they do replicate TekTek, it'd probably be pay-to-use. If it isn't, you can expect the same brand of half-assery that is the new inventory arranger to be ported into the new TekTek. If they can't even get the inventory search right, how are they doing to make a similar system that operates using the same search terms? I can't even search my inventory for things that are green and get all of my green items- I get maybe half of them. That isn't something that Gaia is going to waste their time trying to correct because it doesn't benefit their bottom line. TekTek has been the only way I have been able to find certain poses, or match colors between items easily and quickly. Doing it from my inventory is unreliable and clunky at best.

I didn't use it a ton but I'll certainly miss it - it made color matching and finding specific poses and items so much easier.

I totally felt that way at first. But it was all so uncharacteristic of Gaia. Aside from the gold gens, I've seen them at least try to conform to the demands we make. And they've got a new product manager who's trying hard to keep us happy too and spent time as a user on this site.

I felt like this was a slap to the face of Gaia's users as well as Tektek.

But it's well within Gaia's rights to go after Tektek. Tekton was using Gaia's property to advertise a site that directly competed with Gaia. And there's something about how he was profiting from Gaia's merchandise because those ads on every page were generating revenue for himself (his competing site). .... I should go find the well-written post I saw.

Also, Tektek held onto the letter for two weeks without responding to Gaia. Gaia wanted (still wants) to work with Tektek. They just want him to remove the ads. Gaia heard nothing from Tekton...

Tekton responded by taking the 2nd option and just shutting down Tektek.
And why not? He only profits from that move. It'll piss off Gaia's users, make Gaia look like the bad guy and funnel more people to his site. And he didn't have the time to look after Tektek anymore anyway. I guess Tektek was down for so long because his volunteers running it couldn't get a hold of him. He's too busy with his new avatar site to keep Tektek up and running.
I get it though. I'm sure his site is keeping him super busy.

Gaia went through the correct channels to contact him by sending that letter. It's just too bad that they couldn't have approached him off the record first or something.

Now, Gaia is no angel. But then again, I don't blame them either. Tekton's site is siphoning away their users... and using their logo and items to do it. XD It's brilliant. Tekton's no angel either. ... All in all, I don't think Gaia wanted Tektek to get shut down. But I also don't think Tekton really understood the ramifications of what he was doing with the ads. But then again, that's all just my opinion from reading other opinions. xDD

...As to missing Tektek's beautiful search system.... yeahhh.... everything you said. u .u
This sucks that this all happened because I do like recolorme. The only downside is that it's such a slow site. And I've spoken with nice people on it, but it's still full of haters, snobs and trolls (like anywhere on the internet).

I haven't noticed them making any real effort to listen to the community feedback. Every once in a blue moon we'll see a gold sink event- but no real effort is being made to get the gold out of circulation once it's created. They have also ignored countless requests to correct broken features - the inventory arranger still has not been fixed, it's completely unusable in Chrome. Guilds haven't even been dusted off, and there's still really no word on what's going to become of our zOMG rings and companions and such. zOMG has been gone for a long time - we should at least have those answers or some hint of a plan.

And of course it was within Gaia's right to do it - no question there. My problem with it is that they knowingly allowed it to go on for 10+ years - even when it originally started, he had to have been making revenue somewhere to pay for the servers and they said not a word about it then.

Tektek has advertised other competitor sites before - I can clearly recall seeing ads to other avatar-based forum sites there, so why no uproar then? It honestly just feels like Gaia took the opportunity to get rid of it, I don't believe that it had anything to do with recolor. Else they'd have pulled the plug when they were linking to Menewsha and Solia.

I don't really believe that Gaia wanted to work with Tekton. That's what they're going to announce publically, but we have no idea what may have been said or done behind the scenes. 'Willing to work with' may well have meant 'pay us a shitton of money' or 'give us the code so that we can copy it without having to pay our devs' - which could easily be why Tekton said ******** it. Just because someone says 'we're doing x' doesn't mean it's true. I'd believe it if I saw an account of the entire thing from Tekton as to whether or not he tried to contact them and what may have been exchanged. It's all speculation otherwise- I'd like to believe the best in the situation, I just cant.

It very possibly could have been a huge middle finger to Gaia- though I know Tekton was working on it when the servers crashed not too long ago, so I don't believe that it was abandoned fully. I totally respect his choice though - even if he never attempted to respond, jumping ship when a giant corporation comes knocking isn't a dumb thing to do.

I don't think they could have done it off the record - that would just set Gaia up for potential problems, so a letter was the only way to go, though I agree that it sucks and it would have been nice to have a more personal approach.

I'm sure Tekton knew what he was doing- though, again, it's not the first site he's advertised there. It just happens to be his - though the others are equally competitive and, again, not a word was said when they were being linked and advertised. Neither party is really squeaky clean, but all the same, it could have been handled better - initially and on the back end. I still doubt very strongly that Gaia will release a similar system - and if they do, it's going to be broken and willfully neglected like every other new feature that doesn't require payment.

--I don't even bother with the forums on recolor, I just go for the games and the cute avatars.

See, for me, I put no real time, effort, or money into gaia anymore. I've seen it as a sinking ship for a while but I guess I'm just waiting around to watch it go down I suppose? I expect to one day log in and see a notice that they are closing or just not be able to get to the site or something.. but this place gives me a way to kill time so I pop on here most days in my down time. Mainly to make trade and such in the Pokemon forum, but I digress.

I completely agree with you though. Except I think it actually started going downhill in 2013-ish because that's when they really started pushing CASHCASHCASH and gold gens left and right. I know this place is a lost cause but.. eh, I'll probably stick it out anyway.

I also know that there is no hope for a good dream avatar creator in the future because gaia is so money hungry, but I guess that's one aspect where I was being hopeful. :/
I am also holding out on false hope that they will make the search function less broken so that I can actually find items that I'm looking for, but that is unlikely as well.

Apparently they got a new general manager or something recently and he has decided to crack down on things that interfere with 'their profit' from what I've read, idk.

Either way, they won't listen to anyone on this site so our opinions on the matter don't really exist to them, ya know? They say that user input is important but that's just their way to placate the masses. Not to mention, half of gaia is either on their side on this decision or doesn't care so the other half is getting pushed to the side.

I think the majority of people just don't care or have already left if they did. I've been trying to stay hopeful for a long time that things will come up out of the gutter here, but alas, the tailspin continues. And it isn't even TekTek, really - it's just the whole atmosphere here these days. There has been so much vitriol in the forums that I don't even dare peek inside them anymore. Even at the NSTG we have seen a huge influx of trolls and generally terrible people whereas these used to be extremely rare things in that community. The best people are being driven away en masse for one reason or another, and even the quality of the community has been going steadily downhill. There are still amazing people out there, sure - but a lot of them have decided that Gaia isn't worth their time anymore, and that's about where I am. I really only check in at all anymore because I have so many friends that haven't bailed yet and because I love my guilds too much to abandon them. But, I'm planning to go back to school soon- and I'm not sure that Gaia will be worth the energy when I do. I have plenty of other ways to kill time, so I'd rather focus on ones that are legitimately joyful than ones that feel like a chore :l

Hmm~ I'll have to keep note of what I noticed that seemed to be on the up. Like I said, it was slow. They brought back "ask the admin" in the form of "ask the staff." They went from the first initial shock of no events (heartbreak cafe valentines D: ) to holding events again. Granted, the events have the SwitchEm as a cash maker. But I see that as the staff trying to compromise for us. The majority of events are still not cash laden. ... I'm still unhappy with the fact that there is a cash element to events, but... ... ugh. I also like the site wide avatar contests that are being held. While I don't agree with all of the winners, I like that they're completely free to enter. And it's like a free mini event that brings users together to chat. It's aaaallllmmmoooossst like Reapersun's random events that she held. I mean, it's not close in format at all, but it's something random that appears, gets users talking, and is officially sanctioned.
I didn't realize that the new inventory arranger is unusable in chrome. O: I use chrome and it works fine. Well, works fine for the broken system that it is. <.<" I still like the old arranger better (and the old arranger still works). I agree that they should make the new system better... and I have no idea why they thought this system would be great. I think they only tested it using inventories of, like, 1000 items or much much less.
That's true on the zOMG front. I just think they're scared to mention it again. xDDD Like maybe they think we've forgotten about zOMG and bringing it up will start the rage right back up. ... It will though.

Yeah it's just that Tekton used those run of the mill ad packages to advertise before. The catch there being that he couldn't control those ads when an avatar site was advertised. Once he changed it to recolorme ads, that's when he was directly advertising a competitor using Gaia's intellectual property.
And, ugh, I've heard that this call to action only took place now (and not a year ago) because of the new General Manager. u .u" I had high hopes for him so far. That bummed me out. Otherwise, he talked a good game in his intro post. I thought he'd be on the side that's best for the users.

You have a point there. XD I didn't think Gaia really wanted to work with Tekton either. I think they just hoped he would take down his ads. Like that. Done. I don't think they realized that he was done running Tektek and that this just gave him the best excuse to shut it down. Now it's all Gaia's fault.
I've seen people state that they're Tektek volunteers. Whether that's true or not, I haven't checked. But I saw two people state that Tekton no longer wanted to put effort into Tektek. And why would he want to? It crashed twice in the past couple months. But he was already ignoring Tektek. It was down for so long because the Tektek volunteers were having trouble making contact with him to fix it.
And yeah, I don't blame him for his actions either. I think he's done the best possible thing he could do in this situation. XD He got the best end of the deal out of all of this. Users are pissed at Gaia and giving more traffic to his site. (On the flip side, other users won't even go near Tektek or Recolorme because they don't want to add to the traffic. Well, he doesn't lose there either because those users don't sound like they would've done that anyway.)

Yeah, all in all, I blame both parties. I see why Gaia did it. It's a necessary but incredibly stupid move. And I totally understand why Tekton responded the way he did. It just sucks.

I like the card game. And the free daily items from it got me hooked. Especially since it takes sooo long to earn gold or whatever the currency is. It's been a while since I've logged into it, but I'm planning on logging in for the 1st. I'm hoping they do something for their anni.

Edit; I've been rambling this out and just in case I wasn't clear here... I do agree with what you're saying. Just responding. Your points are valid and I totally understand how this adds onto existing feelings of dissatisfaction with Gaia.
I think I'm just trying to stay in my little bubble and pretend that Gaia is still what it was.

XD Everything you said. I'd just repeat everything you said.
I've been just floating too. I mean, I still enjoy doing quite a few things on this site so I'm still around. But I'm definitely not happy with Gaia. I won't spend money on this site, but I'm not going to take it as far as not collecting free cash. ... I also can't stand it in the forums. People are exactly what you've said, either vehemently against Tekton, just not caring, or upset about losing Tektek. And I agree that it looks like those who care about Tektek are getting pushed to the side. They're also getting bullied by the other users.
Facts and speculations aside, people should be allowed to miss Tektek. And most of the time someone says that in the GCD, they get attacked with "facts" about why they just need to get over it and use Gaia's (unhelpful) features. :/ ... Ugh. People.

Ask the Admin coming back is hardly something that fixes the economy, though. And even if you read through their responses, they just ignore things that they don't want to answer. It's nice that it's back in some capacity, sure, but they're not addressing the things that need addressed.

Events weren't gone for long - I think they were more skipped once or twice because the staff was too busy to put them together, not because they wanted to do away with them. I can only recall one or two that were absent before they came back.

The avatar contests are nice, but again, they don't fix the things that are broken. It really feels more like a distraction. "Come do this, don't worry that you're new and will never be able to afford your dream avatar without shelling over hundreds of real dollars!" That's what all of it feels like, anymore - rather than fix the economy, they're just going to try and distract us from it.

And yes - it's unusable, I can't drag and drop anything. In order to make it work, I'd have to use IE. I've had the same problem with achievements for years - that's why the three achievements under my avatar never change. Those are only there because I hopped into IE and assigned them to those slots quite some time ago. Even when I did try to use the new arranger in IE, it was cloning items left and right in the view I was using (thankfully not cloning them for real) and nothing would stay where I wanted it.

When I saw Menewsha on TekTek, it was the only ad I saw for 2 months straight. I don't think he was using an ad package at that time. I don't recall the Solia banner as clearly, but I know Menewsha was there uninterrupted for a long time.

Being on the side of the users isn't profitable OTL Like I said - just because they say something doesn't mean they'll live up to it. It was just a flower PR move.

I don't think it was in that bad of shape before it closed down - you have to imagine that, with there being literally thousands of image files, getting them all back into place after the crash would have taken a LOT of effort. It was pretty much all there before it closed - just not everything worked when you clicked to use it. Tekton probably stopped responding and working on it when he received the letter - and really, why wouldn't he? Beforehand it seemed to have been making good progress though - it was back into a semi-functional state.

I'd take 'I'm a TekTek volunteer' with a grain of salt - I had a friend swearing up and down for a while that she worked on TekTek and I know for a fact that she didn't :l It's not much different than people saying 'Oh I used to be a mod' or 'Oh I used to do X' when these sorts of situations come around. They could be totally honest, but in my personal experience, they're probably just opportunistic and attempting to draw attention to themselves.

Bits? Yeah, earning those is a pain in the a** :l I've been claiming my faction reward wings and selling them - most of them are ugly as sin so I don't even feel bad, but you get like 10k for each set which goes a really long way on Recolor. I'm also not at all ashamed that I have the item subscription - $7 per month isn't bad for a new item every day, and a lot of those items are really nice things that I'd have wanted anyway.

I think if Gaia had worded that letter differently, things would have gone down MUCH smoother.

I've been rambling too, no worries - nothing you're writing has a combative tone, so I wasn't taking it as such x3~ I think this is all stuff that's way too far into that gray area for anyone to accurately read - aside from the things that are jacked up out in the open like 133TGate was.

I stayed in my own little bubble for a long time, too - but, that bubble was mostly guilds, and now that the community is declining there as well I think I'm just done sweatdrop I've been spending a lot more time on FlightRising (like, an unholy amount of time) and playing FFXIV so Gaia isn't even the pleasant timesink that it once was. I've found other ways to keep myself amused.

I'm not quitting, certainly not - but at the same time, I've more or less only been logging in to clear my announcements out anyway so I can't really get more inactive than I already am.

XD That's very true about Ask the Staff. I guess I gave up on it long ago. You know, when I realized that Lanzer was telling us false info because he didn't even know what was going on. u .u; But I'm a fan of whatever allows the staff to talk to users. It creates some illusion of community.

Yep, we didn't skip many... but the new regime wasn't making events a priority. They didn't understand that events keep us happy. And then the events we got (or just the first one that returned?) was heavy with the cash component. So I'm glad they tuck the cash component away in SwitchEm. Still hate that it's there. I'm just glad that it's not a main component.
.... Like this event. Not a fan of it. They're not directly asking for cash to be spent, but the real trash items are worthless. D; They want RIG items and s**t. Some gold shop items work, thankfully. I've been going back and forth between deciding to buy 4 closet spots for the Achievement. I don't care about achievement points. And I barely care about titles.. but.. that fashionista title... I think I'd have some fun with that. u .u; 4b would buy me so many items though. @ .@ And I'd have fun with them too. Ugh.

XD Yeah I agree there. I don't see the economy changing. When the new CEO came in, I looked at his Linkedin page. It looks like he stays at companies for 1-2 years before moving on. Well, we're coming close to that 2 year mark... When this whole thing started, I couldn't wait for this point to come so that the Gaia team could fix things after he left. I... just don't see that happening. u .u

Weird. I had one issue with the new inventory system. (Er, glitch. I have lots of issues with it. XD;) For a few weeks, it wouldn't save after I moved items. But it works now. And I use chrome. I still hate the new arranger, but at least it works. I guess that makes me thankful. x ----x; I'd hate to have to use IE.
That sucks about the achievement icons too. I guess it's a good thing I don't pay attention to the icons.

Hmm. Odd. I only hear Gaians keep saying that he used ad packages, but I was thinking the same thing. I couldn't tell you which avatar sites or how long they were there. But I was pretty certain those ads were there most of the time.

Remember when Tektek was literally down and unusable for a few weeks? I guess that's when they couldn't get a hold of him. Or so they say. After that, he was fixing it up. Sounded expensive to keep buying the hardware since he had two crashes within a short period of time. I totally agree that it looked like it was on the mend.
I was happy to have it back. I didn't care so much, by that point, that half the images wouldn't appear on the avatar. I was just glad that they still appeared when I searched Tektek dream avatar. My item search function was back. I am soooo horrible at item names now. I can't tell you what things are called. I just know what colors they were. XD

XD Yeah~ that's why I did take it with a grain of salt. I mean, pssh, I'm the Queen of England. Seriously. But no one's going to believe me since I can't give proof. It's for my own safety, you know.

Yes! Bits! Funny thing, I remembered that word several hours after I posted and didn't feel like editing the post. Okay, so it wasn't very funny.
Sweet. I forgot about how I could sell those wings. And I think he priced the subscription very well. I think it's a steal. Truthfully, if I had $7 to spare each month, I probably would buy GC. > < I was really into recolorme when it opened. And I get addicted to Slide Quest and Quads. I'm just... not addicted right now. I recently discovered that I can play Quads over and over and over each day to catch up on the prizes. @ .@ Good move. I've started to play that while stuck waiting for things (like DMV line).

Oh good good. We're on the same page. XD That's what I figured, but had a moment of worry. Ohhhhhhhhhh l33tgate. I recently took the time to actually read about it. I dismissed it as paranoia theory at first... and never got free time to actually read it. Did recently. Holy s**t. Free market my a**.

I had to look up Flight Rising. It looked like a neat forum site. I know nothing about it, but from the looks of things, it takes those baby dragon egg things that people breed on forum sites.. to the max. And I can eeeaaasssiiilllyyy sink into MMOs. x ---x I haven't gotten to that addiction level where you never leave the house, but I got pretty close. XD I've gotta stay away from them. It's why I've clung to Gaia. It's a forum. I can walk away at any time. (It's also why I stopped playing zOMG. XD I was spending too much time on it. ...zOMG, the poor excuse of an MMO.)
I had been spending time playing the app DrawSomething2 (which became Art With Friends). I figured it was a healthy pastime since I was drawing again. That app will be shutting down on April 1st. It's pretty hard to ruffle my feathers, but that has me pissed right now. It was the best drawing app/tool I've played with. Easy and the final pics had a better quality than what I can get out of my other drawing apps. I think I'm so miffed about that, I just can't care about Gaia yet.
I've still been sinking time into Gaia... but I've been typing up guides that no one reads anyway. XD But I find it relaxing. > < So I just keep doing it.

I got the Better Gaia add-on just because of announcements. I love that I can open them all in just two clicks. Glorious. ... I never thought you were considering quitting. I just took it as a way to help convey how tired you are of dealing with Gaia's bullshit. But quit? Eh. Just like you said, it's so easy to just log on and clear announcements. Or, just take a hiatus and return later. Or~ to just focus on whatever you enjoy about this site and ignore everything else. It makes no sense to quit. *shrugs* I mean, I do understand that people have good reasons for quitting. It's just so easy to not quit. And why quit in such a final sense of the word? Just don't log in for a few months if you have to. Of course, the market will be utterly destroyed by that time. XD But anyway... you know what helps me? The NSTG has been giving me a reason to post. I've been having fun on Gaia. It's been nice to talk to people again. Most of my friendlist is full of users who haven't logged on in years. I really enjoyed the summer event and the Halloween event last year. Heck, I liked the NSTG Halloween event waaayyyy more than Gaia's. ... So you'd better not be inactive this October. XDD I'm already looking forward to whatever you all are gonna cook up.

Edit; Well s**t. And that was my attempt at being succinct. Why can't I have this problem when it comes to essays and research papers?
