                                          Name: Afryse Shukum
Afryse - å fryse meaning 'To Freeze' in Norwegian.

Shukum - from Uentshukumishiteu. A spirit of the water that protects water creatures from man. It would cause holes in thick ice, and ice manipulation, to attack hunters. Comes from Innu mythology.

                                          Blood colour: Yellow Blood! #a27a0e

                                          Gender: Male

                                          Symbol: Snowflake!

                                          Personality:
Afryse is calm, cool, collected, and very much that one troll you don't want to see pissed off. He is not a loner, but doesn't go out of his way to engage with other trolls. This is due to trying to keep his power secret. For those friends he does make, he is fiercely protective of them to the point of violence - usually by words, but if the situation deems it, then by ice. (more details later)

In order to get Afryse to break out of his shell and engage with others, they needed to most likely be a lower blood caste, be interested in literature, art, or hunting. Any of those or a combo of them will intrigue the troll and make him want to get to know you. Typically, Afryse avoids higher blood castes (out of deference and fear), those of a clingy nature (they almost always want something), and those with a primadonna/it's all about me type of attitude. Afryse doesn't get along with those trolls and would rather just not deal with it. A mix of good and bad traits could make him stay or leave, depending on how strong one of the good is versus the bad.

This troll has one sharp tongue. He can cut you down with words, like chips of ice, in an instant. When words fail, real ice will do just the trick. For those reasons, Afryse tries not to become angry or let things effect him. He is like a lake lying under a thick sheet of ice above. Nothing seems to disturb the down below, but beware when things get moving. You could be in danger! Using this analogy, Afryse is definitely a 'plot for revenge' sort of troll.

Using his powers and attacking with ice though... It needs to be a really special circumstance. Either there's imminent danger, Afryse is beyond angry and pressed to use his powers, or he is compromised (ie not in a good state of mind). As much as the troll loves his friends, he can accidentally be mean and hurt them.

To amuse himself, he likes to work on sculptures, of either ice or clay. He also enjoys reading. He's a frequent library patron, finding the long aisles of dusty tomes good friends. Witikodad likes to hide below the tables and, since there's not much to envy in a library, he general sleeps. For that reason, Afryse likes to have friends join him at the library for serious discussions or just for fun.

Afryse hoards and collects things, especially food and clothing. He's cold almost always, even wearing a jumpsuit with scarf and living in the desert. Food is even a bigger imperative. Afryse frequently hunts with Witikodad. It is the only way to curb their envy and greed to a silent hum. By hunting, they amass more-more-more for their hive. It doesn't need to be of quality (though it's best if it is). By hunting/gathering they can just get more stuff to fill the nooks and crannies of their hive. If their envy and greed is not taken care of, Afryse can become abrasive and downright dangerous. He will attack in order to get something he wants, if he is not in the proper mental state. By not in a proper mental state, this is when he has not hunted/collected for a long time, or has been emotionally stressed beyond normal. This rarely happens, thankfully.

Envy and Greed with friendships is very difficult. As a matter of fact, it can be almost impossible for Afryse to handle. This is why he does not want trolls over to his hive. If they see what he has, they will want what he has! Going to a friends house can be just as bad. Staying in a neutral area is the best for both parties. Afryse is not totally opposed to giving gifts, however. If it's something small and on his own terms, he is likely to give small things to friends or those who look like they are in need (ie close to death and need some noms).

If placed in a moment where he must choose between a friend or the things he has, Afryse will go for friends. It will be a hard decision and one that he might grow to regret later, but Afryse views his friends as a form of possession. Those are HIS friends and he won't let anyone or anything harm them. He becomes possessive and grumpy too when they end up having friends, but since he tries his hardest to protect them from his own envy, he goes to great lengths to make sure their social lives do not get too tangled up.

Hemospectrum wise, Afryse is strongly aware of it and is not totally against it or totally for it. While he would like to align with the highbloods in order to get STUFF, he is strongly protective of his friends which tend to always be lower bloods. When a highblood is around, he will be respectful to them. t least to their face.

Having powers is a mixed bag to Afryse. It's a blessing, as it makes him stronger and unique, but it is also a giant target on his back. He dislikes them for that reason. He chooses to hide his abilities as a survival strategy. No powers = higher chance of living. At least that's what he hopes. There are some times when hiding them is just impossible. When trolls are close to him and he's hydrated, they could potentially feel the coolness around his body. If/when they are revealed he shifts rapidly from fear to anger. It's usually an anger at himself that is expressed to all others around him. Sometimes the anger won't happen and instead he will be fearful. This is the case when his powers are revealed when protecting a friend. How will this friend view me? Will they hate me? Will they still be close to me? Those questions relentlessly peck at his mind.

                                          Strengths:
++ Poised: Nothing ever seems to phase Afryse. If is does, it needs to be something pretty big, like stealing from him or hurting someone he is protecting. Otherwise, the troll seems to take everything with ease. Or rather, it just seems like nothing can penetrate his cool exterior.

++ Protective: Afryse protects those he considers friends. It basically goes: Friends > Powered Trolls/Mutants > Low bloods > High Bloods. Afryse feels like he should protect fellow powered trolls/mutants, because they will have shared experiences. When pushed, he will protect friends over his desire for things.

++ Perseverance: It doesn't take a lot for Afryse to get by, and so a lot of what he has accumulated is mostly excess. This extends to both emotional and physical perseverance. Afryse can survive very high temperatures and very low temperatures thanks to always being cold. Cold weather? He's already freezing! Hot weather? Ah, that feels great. Emotionally, he is strong and adept at waylaying his own fears and emotions.

                                          Flaws:
-- Sharp tongued: Youch. Someone tell this kid to not be so mean. Partially due to his large and lengthy readings, Afryse has a formidable vocabulary that he can and will use when angry. His main offense is emotional trauma caused by his words. If that fails, he will resort to his powers.

-- Envious: Why does everyone have more than me? It's just not fair! Witikodad has sown the seeds of envy deep into Afryse. He is always bitter of the higher blood caste, even if he is polite to them. Anyone who has more than him is by default his enemy. Afry tries hard to avoid going to any of his friend's homes. Once he realizes they have more than he does, things will become sour. It's better to live in bliss.

-- Greedy: How do you curb envy? Get more! Afryse always wants more, more, more. Enough just isn't enough when it comes to this troll. He gathers and hoards, neatly mind you, all manners of items. Giving away anything he owns is nigh impossible. Afryse is affronted at even the thought of it! He is not going to shower you with gifts or beetles. Everything is stowed neatly in his hive for later use, but truthfully he will never use half of what he has.

Weapon: Spearkind Hunting Spear - Something that Witikodad taught him to wield, it is his trusted companion when hunting.

                                          Appearance: ~~ Premade!

Home: Chittentown. The hive is rather tall, with multiple levels and hundreds of windows. The inside of it is almost always hot or near boiling by effect, and Afryse is happiest when it is warm. There is also two basement levels. The top level i for keeping things that need to be cold - including his ice sculptures. The bottom most level has a small fresh water spring. This is separate from the water used by the rest of the hive (for baths or toilets etc). Afryse uses his mostly for drinking (since its very cool) and using it to practice ice manipulation (since it is damp in there).

Lusus: WitikoDad - Witiko (Innu spelling of Wendingo/Wendigo), are cannibalistic creatures of envy and greed. Wikitodad is no exception to this. He wants everything for his little charge, and will go to great lengths to do so. Being in the desert, food can be scarce. There have been times when Witikodad has tried to tempt Afryse into eating his friends or hunting trolls for food. These moments terrify Afryse to no end. Because of the danger his lusus imposes on others, Afryse dislikes friends going to his hive. When outside of the hive, Witikodad is much more subdued and under control.

Afryse's envy has stemmed from Witikodad's own envy. Witikodad constantly whispers angrily about how others are better. How others have more than they and it's just not fair. Witikodad often prompts Afryse to steal or plunder from his fellow trolls, but Afryse's protective nature has curbed that thought. There have been times of extreme weakness when he has stolen.

WitikoDad mgiht seem dangerous, or a bad lusus, but he loves his charge and truly wants the best for him. It's unclear why WitikoDad is the way he is. He's mentioned that he was from a land far away where the winters were long and harsh. In order to survive, he had to take as much as he could, which would pit him against other lusii he had cared for. This experience had scarred him and in order to protect Afryse from this fate, he has been trying to implant that friends are superficial and things are eternal. Afryse is not sure how to feel about his lusus. He loves him, but also fears him. It's a tough relationship.

Power: Cyrokinesis -- offensive style A

Afryse must remain hydrated in order to use his power. It is the 'condition'. If he is dehydrated, then his powers will become weaker or almost unusable. When Afryse is properly hydrated, the air around him (about one inch from his skin) will be cool and cold, and his breath cold as well. His body is likewise cold to the touch.

Hey Magi! I think you've got a really solid base for Afryse (no ice pun intended), there's nothing that jumps out at me beyond wanting a little more. He seems like he'll be a good addition to the story and I'd love to learn a bit more about him, so on to the crit. (Also as a side note, I love how you dealt with his power and staying hydrated. Very interesting spin.)

You mention that a good way to make him angry is to steal from him or hurt someone he is protecting, but I'm also curious, what does he usually like about other trolls? What sort of personality would he be more interested in making friends with? Likewise, what sort of characters would he avoid? Since he doesn't go out of his way to engage with others, I'd like to know what sort of things would attract him.

How would he react to his powers being revealed? It seems like when his anger gets the best of him, it can override his innate urge to keep his powers hidden. Likewise, how does he feel about them and why does he choose to hide them? It also seems like if he were to use them around others, it would be a significant occurrence.

Why does hunting help curb his and Witikodad's envy and greed?

And just a couple little grammatical things:

ice of words -> ice or words
in and instant -> in an instant
ice of clay -> ice or clay
doesn't take a lot of Afryse to get by -> for Afryse
adept and waylaying -> adept at waylaying

Hi Sae! Thank you for the crit and the compliment on his power. <3

I answered/added info to the quest, but for ease of reading I will copy the additions here.

What sort of personality would he be more interested in making friends with? Likewise, what sort of characters would he avoid?

Thanks for the grammar catches. xux; I thought I got most of them, but looks like I did not. oops.

Crit-Time with Cylem!

Reading over my notes, I only have questions on a couple areas of Afryse's app for clarity purposes. Afryse as a whole is looking pretty dang good. owo

When you say Afryse is fiercely protective of his friends, how quick is he to resort to violence? When Afryse says mean things to people, how intentional is it? How likely is he to hurt his friends? If someone wrongs him, is he more of a “plotting revenge” kind of guy or is he more explosive?

I would also like some more clarification for his envy/greed. How does Afryse manage his envy/greed where his friendships are involved? Are there times in which one would win out over the other? When you say Afryse is occasionally “not in the proper mental state,” what does this mean? What would bring him to this point?

As for his protectiveness's specific decription, if he values mutants more for their shared experiences, why would he then favor highbloods over his fellow lowbloods? Does his envy or greed factor into this? Is he consciously aware of this hierarchy?

Finally, a couple of questions about Witikodad. Does he believe he’s being a good parent to Afryse/care about Afryse, or does he operate out of obligation as a lusus? Is Afryse just tolerating Witikodad, or does he care for his lusus? Also, for my own curiosity, what does Witikodad look like?

ALL RIGHT So I think I've addressed most of your concerns! The only issue is that for the protective trait... A lot of the stuff dealing with caste + protection is up in the air because Afryse has yet to really interact WITH someone of the higher caste. So he's a little wishy-washy on the whole matter. In general, he DOES want to manipulate the higher caste to get stuff from them, but he also wants to protect those of the lower caste and mutants too.

Also I'm not sure what WitikoDad looks like. I've got some rough ideas and I'll work on them. He's not a small Lusus, that's for sure. He's very big and I imagine rather intimidating looking when he wants to be. Some kind of mix between a deer, a bear, a yeti, and a man. XD

Mmkay, so from what I understand, Afryse is more likely to appeal to highbloods for the sake of gaining resources and status with which to protect his lowblooded friends, right? If so, I really like that. That’s neat.

I did notice something about the way you describe Afryse’s problems with his envy and greed, though. Specifically, the way that Afryse is compelled to go on regular hunting/gathering trips in order to manage his stress levels and keep him from snapping at people causes him to read as literally having compulsive hoarding disorder. It’s cool if this is the case; I’m just curious as to how intentional it is.

As Afryse stands now, it’s a little hard to gauge the relationship between his protectiveness and his envy/greed. If anything, it sounds like Afryse’s primary goal is to protect his friends from himself with regards to his envy, which doesn’t exactly come off as a strength. In a dire situation, which trait of Afryse’s would win out in the end? Is he protective of his friends in a way that’s reminiscent of his protectiveness over his belongings, or does he always consider other trolls to be competition for resources?

Also an important detail: Afryse is a powered troll, but he isn’t a mutant. Powered trolls are socially accepted, but are frequently drafted into becoming weapons or helmsmen for the military when they come of age—especially if they do something to catch the attention of a military recruiter.

And finally, why is WitikoDad envious? This is a big part of his personality, and therefore Afryse’s, so I’d like some backstory on this. Is it purely about wanting Afryse to succeed? What does he hope to achieve by planting these thoughts in Afryse’s mind?

All right! I actually changed him around a bit. It was making less sense for him to be a supporter of the military so he's lost that part of himself and has a slightly bigger emphasis on friendship as a form of possession. Also added in why WitikoDad has been training him the way he has.

Also changed he mutant/powered part! I didn't realize that. Thank you. Uhm, there might still be some hidden in there but I think I grabbed them all? While Afryse isn't a mutant, he considers himself a mutant since he's abnormal.
