"Raemos..." the young man stirred, mumbling something unintelligable. "Raaeemos" he was shaken, and he shifted, trying to get away from the shaking. "Raerae..." he couldn't get away from the shaking, "Wake up."

He woke up, feeling like he had been wrung through a strainer. "Whaaaa?" he asked groggily.

"Welcome back Rae." through the thickness that seemed to shroud his waking thoughts, he recognized - or he thought he recognized - Vona.

"Whaa?" he croaked again, his tongue heavy in his dry mouth. Vona held something up to his face, and cool, refreshing liquid poured into his mouth. He swallowed it, then drank eagerly, each swallow bringing him closer to wakefulness. He drank until there was no more water, before he put it down. "Thank you"

"No problem, little brother!" she said, smiling at him. He was already sitting up, and as he tried to sit up more, he felt his muscles twinge and ache.

"Augh..." he groaned, pained. "What in the sands..."

"Well, Rae, you kind of fought a ton of rock monsters, fell from a kargoth, and dragged a bag of stones for Seren only knows how far. I think that sums it up." she sat back, "I should think you'd be feeling it."

"Oh." he blinked, remembering, "Oh. Well." had he really done that much? In just one day? That was a lot... "Um..." he squinted. It was awfully bright out. "What time is it...?" he asked, shading his sockets before giving up altogether and starting to work his goggles down his face.

"It's noon. Or later. I have no idea." said Vona, taking a drink of water.

"Noon?!" Raemos tried to get up, but his body would not let him. He felt like a mess of twigs and pain and, as he fell back to the sand and landed with an undignified 'whumph', he looked up at Vona, pleading behind his goggles. "But... we have to get home."

"Yes, yes we do, but Betty was injured and you were out, so I figured I'd let the two of you rest up..." Raemos became aware of the rise and fall of his 'pillow' and how hairy it was. He looked back to see the kargoth resting.

"Injured?" he asked, concerned. Without the kargoth, they wouldn't make it, not unless they dumped most of their goods in the desert...

"Yeah. But rest and a little bit of magic did her good. I think she'll be able to go soon."

"Oh..." good... Raemos felt himself droop, his aching side and arms and legs all conspiring to drag him downwards.

"Maybe you will too. Here." his sister waved a fruit sandwich in front of his nose, "Eat this and tell me how you feel. I had some jerky, so feel free to have another..."

He ate it hungrily, the sweetness giving him exactly what he needed... except for energy. "Ugh... I'm still so..."

"Don't worry about it, Raerae. Just rest, and I'll have Betty carry you when she's ready."

"But... what about you?" he asked, struggling against the light sleep that loomed inside of him, "You need to... to ride..."

"Pfff, kargothshit. I can do this." She was going to try. She had to. He'd done so much - he'd saved her life yesterday. It was her turn to look after him, at least until he was a bit better. She was, after all, his older sister. "Besides, your the birthday boy."

"Wha?" but he was out again.

Vona laughed softly to herself. She was just happy he was there, and alive, and safe, and she - on her honor as his sister - was going to try to keep it that way.

She began to pack up, setting up Betty to carry things. "Sorry old girl," she said, petting the kargoth, "Just a bit more work. I think we're almost home."

The kargoth huffed. The magic was speeding the healing of her injured leg, but she would have moved anyway. She wanted to be back with her herd and family, and away from this expansive desert and its unnatural dangers.

It was early afternoon when Vona gently shook her brother awake again and helped him into the riding straps, securing him in. "You can sleep up there for a bit." she called up as Betty shakily stood up, "Its very comfortable, you'll see..."

She took the bridle in hand and, walking, began to lead the kargoth home.

It was about an hour of realizing that her shoes and dress were terrible for walking when she saw the gleaming shapes in the distance. She'd only ever seen them from yesterday, but she knew them as if she had seen them all her life.

Mara.

"Rae?" she called up, nudging herself next to the kargoth for comfort, "RAE!" she heard him murmur and stir. He'd wake up - he'd have to. "Raemos!" she called, desperate, as they came closer. She couldn't fight very well. Betty was healing. And Rae was exhausted.

She kept moving, swallowing hard as she watched them approach. She had never been one for praying, not like her brother but...

Oh gods... let them not notice us...

This time it seemed apt.

Kadryn and Kirosh were sitting outside listening to the latest gossip and news from his friends who’d dropped by. Holding Peralian and cradling him as he slept Kadryn listened in astonishment at what her people had done.

“Wait, wait! Aevah made … living weapons?” Kadryn said in a shocked voice. Why would her leader do that? Weren’t her people good enough fighters already?

“Yup,” Orlon, the gaili Dovaa who’d actually built their house for them replied. “And somehow one ended up getting a mind of its own. And not only did it learn it started making more of itself.”

“Some say it has a soul… and that it gives out pieces of its souls to others that’s why they’re so smart for metal and rocks.” Zares, the Ysali healer, pipped up from where he lounged in his chair.

“Oh come on now,” Orlon said in disgust. “A soul? It’s a freaking rock! As much as I love rocks, they ain’t got a soul!”

“Neither do Oblivionites.” Kirosh said in amusement. “But we live and think non the less. Perhaps it’s just magic the thing is sharing out?”

“Well.. how’d it get a mind then?” Zares huffed in annoyance. “They only gave it magic to strengthen it! There is no magic that I know of that can do more than animate and move at the mages will! Not grant a soul to a person. That is a power only the Gods have!”

“Well,” Orlon said with a gleam in his eye, “they did make it partly from the metal from a star!”

They all looked at him. Where was he getting this information from?

“What? It was in the report that Aevah gave out… You guys need to go and read more, seriously!” He said huffily as he sat back into his chair, making it creak beneath his weight.

“So do you think that the personality, mind, or soul thing came from that?” Kadryn asked as she shifted Peralian as he started to squirm.

“Who knows! It’s a fallen star! Man... I wished I’d found it.” Orlon sighed with envy. He loved to collect all sort of rocks and a fallen star was something he wanted!

Kadryn looked at Kirosh. “I’d like to go see this.. but..” She nodded to the kid in her arms and the one in his lap. He smiled.

“Well, considering you had to put up with them for nine months when I could escape… go and have fun for a bit. Just come back before long.” He sighed, “Before they run me ragged!” Kadryn laughed and kissed his cheek as she unloaded Peralin into Zares’s lap.

“Thanks love! I’ll only be gone a week or so.”

She gathered her gear and collected her companion Chu Lin from the tree he was napping in.

“Come on sleepy bear! We’re going hunting!”

Chu Lin grumbled and shurnk himself so she could pick him up and carry him. What’s so exciting about that? You’re always hunting….

“It’s something new! And it’ll be on Eowyn so get ready to travel!” Kadryn filled him in as they flew away from Ayr and across the ocean. It was night time when they landed in a port and Kadryn headed in to an inn to rest and gather more information.

The next morning, rested and with more information on where most of the attacks where, she headed out. Flying through the skies, Chu Lin looking on with interest, they started to search. Normally she’d have kept an eye out for Dragons, but Kiandri’s had long since ceased to worry her. Plus she had Chu Lin to keep and eye out for those! Flying fast and enjoying the sun upon her wings after the mist and chill of Ayr, Kadryn cruised over the dune sea, spotting spots where mara’s had been killed (lovely pile of rocks that..) and signs of a Kargoth passing through. Curious, she curved off to follow that track. Kargoths normally didn’t travel alone, but this had a single set of tracks…

She soon found the Kargoth…. and the Mara’s approaching it. With an eager grin she flew over the animal and crashed into the nearest Mara, her mace slamming down to shatter it’s stone body.

Maybe she should try prayer more often.

Like a bolt of muscle from the sky came a blue-haired full-grown orderite to smash into one of the mara, now dangerously close. Betty tossed her head and trumpeted in symphony, as Vona held on.

"Nice hit!" she called out, waving, her mood lightened. They had a protector.

In front of her, her brother stirred. "Vona?" he asked, eyes still half lidded, "Whats going on?"

She patted his head. "It's mara, Rae, but I think it's going to be..."

"Mara?!" Rae struggled upright, "More?!" he grasped the kargoth's straps for balance and stared wildly around, his gaze fixing upon the shapes. "Seren's light... there's so many..."

"Rae, don't worry about it. Theres someone down there..." Someone awesome and, clearly, having fun. "You should get some rest..."

"There's someone down there?! I gotta... I have to help them!" he struggled free of the straps and checked his mechanical wings - still on his back. Good. "Open!" they still worked, "Fupanoi!" he jumped, letting the levitation spell carry him down.

"Can't you climb down a kargoth like a normal person?!" shouted Vona as he touched down lightly, like a feather, "Ugh... idiot..." she grumbled, worried, as she turned the reluctant kargoth around to face him as she ran into the fray.

His legs and arms were sore - or would be sore soon - but he could uae them, and he would. He drew his sword and wand and did a quick count.

One rock mara had been smashed, and another one was still approaching. A whole squad of metal mara were there. Seven. That was a lot - he could barely handle one, not in single combat. Two had nearly been a disaster. He'd been lucky with three. Seven was asking too much from Seren and fate.

He saw the earth buckle and rise into a wave just behind the disciplined line of the metal mara. A charge he realized, a mage is involved He sought it out and found it's clothed stone shape in the distance, it's hands shimmering with swirled sand as it channeled.

He sent a whipping, clawed tendril of magic at it, shaped like a cross between a dragon's claw and a olrawk's stinger. It broke on the mara's armor, shattering into a thousand tendrils, like roots. They wrapped around it rapidly, obscuring it before, with a gesture of his wand, the semi solid shadows rushed in. He dissipated them again with another gesture, leaving the mara mage to crumple into inanimate stone in the distance.

The wave of earth and sand subsided and receded with a crackling rumble, and a shudder of sand. He looked over at Kadryn, feeling slightly more confident despite the aches and pains he knew he was about to feel.

He couldn't take so many of the metal swordsmen alone... But he was not alone.

"Good morning." he said, briefly glancing at the sky. Oh. No. Wait. "Sorry. Good afternoon." he gave her a wave with his sword hand.

Kadryn kicked away the fallen rubble from the shattered Mara and grinned at the young Orderite girl’s comment. Her eyes narrowed as a green ball of magic flowed out of the Mara’s remains and fled. She watched it go with interest: what was that? A soul? A spell? Was Zares right and the Mara King or something had a soul and that a piece he was sharing out? Or just a spell? She wished for the first time ever that she knew more about magic; normally she didn’t mind that she knew next to nothing about it, but now that there was a confusing puzzle in front of her she wished she knew a bit more.

Her mace flicked out with graceful ease and blasted the last Rock Mara as it charged her. All those years of using rocks as punching bags and fake opponents to test her mace against had made her strong. She was used to the recoil as it tried to bounce off, the pain of contact between metal and rock. She held firm and carried the mace on through the Mara; gouging out a deep trench in the body before twirling her mace around to shatter the head of the staggering Mara. Another green ball of light fled in the same direction as the first. It had to be more than just a spell! She thought incredulously. If it was magic... why did it flee in the same direction instead of dispersing? There was more than just magic in them… because the suits of armor floating towards here did not charge blindly like the Rock ones did… they moved with a grace and confidence she associated with other fighters, not animated objects.

She saw and felt shadow magic reach out from behind her and claim the mage mara. The chill that crawled down her back told her it was dark magic and its castor was near. An Oblivionite, traveling with this young Orderite girl she thought, nice to know I’m not the only Orderite who hangs around with them! Wonder if they’re like me and Kirosh? Just younger!

Before her now were only floating metal statues. Harder than rock and smarter too apparently… but nothing to worry about she thought with a grin. Dragons scared her more with their magic and teeth.

“Afternoon to you as well.” She said with an easy smile. The boy, definitely an Oblivionite though oddly dressed and with… metal fake wings, looked a little worse for wear.

“You look like you’ve already been in a battle already. If you want to stay back and cast that’s fine.”
Chu Lin, clinging to her back hopped off and reverted to his full size. Lightning crackling along his fur as he charged in with a roar.

Hurry up and fight! You can chat later.

Came the amused and eager comment across their mind link. Kadryn chuckled and flared her wings before leaping into the sky. Hovering above the Mara that converged upon her companion, Kadryn dropped like a lightning bolt. Her mace hit first with a satisfying crunch and scream of metal of metal into a Metal Mara. Now in the midst of them she spun and lashed out with her mace, gouging out rents in the armor around her as she danced her destructive dance. Chu Lin attacked one and pushed it to the ground, lightning crackling all over him before he concentrated it into his claws to melt away the metal. His teeth closed about the magic ball that dwelled within the Mara. But his teeth couldn’t hold it and the spark flew away. Kadryn’s whirling mace made the Mara’s wary, but they began to advance anyways.

“Come on.” She hissed, her eyes beginning to glow as she called upon the small amount of Light magic within her to create an invisible set of armor to coat her body. She may like wildness and going crazy in battle, but she wasn’t stupid. They had weapons and those could hurt. She kept a tight rein on herself though, she wasn’t willing to risk going berserk with young people so near.

Go ahead and smash them like bowling pins

"Very well." he agreed, "Close." he said, forcing the mechanism to close the wings and nestle them more comfortably on his back - they did odd things to his balance. He sheathed his sword and focused on his magic, letting the short Orderite do the smashing and bashing. His role in a battle group was flexible, and she was clearly more able to deal with these creatures.

He couldn't help but wonder what the creature was on her back. It looked like a strange mixture of Arrical and Baowi, but was clearly neither, nor any of the creatures described in his much-loved Fauna of Magesc book. It was strange and it crackled with lightning. He would ask - he'd have to ask. But later. For now, he had to play the role of support.

He gestured with his wand, snaking energy through the creature's shadows, then up into their solid forms. He made it pervasive like smoke and, then, gummy and sticky like thick mud, slowing their advance and their movements. He looked over his spell, pleased - it was a derivative of the miasmic spell he'd learned as a child. He couldn't destroy a mara with it, but he could root them a little and watch the sparks fly.

He nudged them closer, tugging at them with strands of magic, drawing them towards a central point and bunching them together, out of their formation.

He smiled somewhat tiredly at the cluster. "Have at them." he said, holding the spell steady.

Kadryn, her mace twirling around lightly in her skilled hands, ducked under one blow from a Mara and lashed upwards with her spiked mace through the swirling lights where its legs should have been. The metal chest plate crumpled beneath the blow and she turned to face the others only to find them being contained in some sort of smoky mud. She laughed; all clustered together they’d make for easy targets! Mages were handy allies it turned out!

She charged; her mace working overtime as she crashed into the group. The scraping shrill scream of metal against metal rang out as she hit. They were far faster and therefore more dangerous than the rock ones, she felt, not that there was any rocks left. But despite the speed, they were easier to destroy! Rocks could be shattered with huge effort, but against these her Mace could do its work just as easily against a Magescian. Armor was less effective than solid rock to her mace’s destructive power! And it channeled Chu Lin’s lightning power easily, melting under its hot temperature. Chu Lin helped by attacking the one’s on the edges, knowing very well to stay out of her Mace’s range once she got too into a battle. She wasn’t berserk, but her mace still flew about with a speed that made it difficult to stop if he got too near and she didn’t see him.

One after another the metal figures collapsed into a pile of twisted and rent metal, the orbs of light that she thought of as almost souls fled into the desert, always the same direction. It must be where their creator is, she thought; I should follow it one of these days….
With the threat dealt with she put her mace back into its strap and turned towards the couple and their Kargoth.

It was definitely impressive to see the clearly very powerful Orderite crash through the mara like a stampeding kargoth. Impressive and wholly terrifying, but Raemos was too tired to do more than watch as she destroyed them.

Vona however, cheered and clapped from her safe perch atop Betty. She pulled the Kargoth into a stop. "That was amazing!" she shouted, fluttering off of the kargoth's back, "So cool!" Raemos couldn't help but smile at his sister's enthusiasm - it was definitely an improvement over her mood before - which had been decidedly un-vona-y.

He dispelled the spell with a gesture, the magic dissipating like a dream into the bright light of the sand. "Thank you," he managed, "For your assistance."

Vona came up beside him and offered her arm to him. He leaned on it gratefully. "You allright, Rae?" she whispered. He nodded.

"Fine, I think." he murmured, "Just tired."

"Good." she raised her voice, grinning, "So, Rae, Why didn't you get a mace instead?" she gave him a friendly jab in the ribs, "She's got you outclassed in all kinds of ways!" she laughed at his chagrined expression before turning her attention to Kadryn. "But yeah, thanks for that." her eyes were bright and excited. It was, Raemos thought, as if she had forgotten her worries of before in her excitement.

Briefly, he remembered the aborted conversation of before, about why she was not a fighter and, suddenly, found himself wondering what sort of warrior she would be. It wasn't very difficult to figure out - She'd be a barbarian, like their father. The thought amused him, and made him almost sad that she had taken the path of tailor instead.

Chu Lin and Kadryn both smiled at Vona’s enthusiasm.
Nice kid. Chu Lin thought with a pleased tone.
Kadryn smirked and thought back; You just like being complemented! Prideful beast…

She looked at her clothes and her smile widened: nice thing about Mara was that they didn’t have blood! Good thing otherwise this set would have to be cleaned… as it was they had a lot of dust on them from the rock mara and desert. No rents either she was pleased to see as well. Meant she didn’t have to go buy more! Kirosh did not let her keep the clothes if they got too tattered... he liked her wearing good clothes and felt she should at least dress nicely.

She walked over towards the couple, thinking how adorable it was the girl let the obviously tired boy lean on her. Always a good thing to have a partner who was there to lend a shoulder.

“You are welcome.” She replied to the boy’s thanks. “I couldn’t just leave a single pair with a Karagoth to be attacked! Plus I was looking for Mara to fight… “

Cause you’re bloodthirsty. Came the amused comment from Chu Lin who was examining the Karagoth.

Hush you. “I’m Kadryn, you are?” She didn’t ask if the lad was okay, mostly because the girl had already done so and another cause she knew males disliked being fretted over by girls... well… unless they were interested in them.

“The scepter’s just a different style of fighting. One of magic instead of brute force,” Kadryn said as she chuckled. “I’m sure when he’s my age and has had all the experiences I’ve had then he won’t be outclassed as much!”

Such a cute couple! Teasing meant they were comfortable with each other! She wished them all the luck in the world cause mixed pairings didn’t have the easiest path.

Betty the Kargoth examined the strange beast in turn, not sure what to make of it. She shifted uneasily, putting her weight onto her less-injured leg. It was fanged and clawed and smelled of Ozone, but it was not attacking so, although not happy about it, she did not move away or attack, but continued to sniff at it with her long trunk.

Pair? thought Raemos, thinking it an odd choice of words, but letting it slide for now. ”I'm Raemos. Raemos Medrol.” he knew he should offer a hand to the lady, be polite, but his arms quite graciously let him know that they much peferred to stay put, thank you. Also, Vona's shoulder was much too comfortable to leave it even briefly to move his shoulders into place for a handshake. He could already feel himself slipping into sleep...

“I'm Vona Medrol.” said Vona, who had an excuse for not offering a hand, as she was occupied in keeping her brother from falling over onto the sand. She opened her wings for additional balance. “And yes, but smashing things is so much more fun, right?” she winked at Kadryn.

“Maybe...” mumbled Raemos, his sockets mostly lidded now, his body slumping with exhaustion. He shook himself, briefly, awake, lifting his head somewhat, feeling embarassed and apologetic for putting all of his weight on her shoulders like this. “But mine is more intellectual.”

“Yes, Rae. You think too much...” Vona said, chuckling. She looked up at Kadryn. “Say, can you help me get my br... friend... back onto the Kargoth? He can't fly, and I don't think he can climb like this...” she hefted him experimentally, knowing she was unable to get him anywhere near the kargoth's big back alone.

She had almost said that he was her brother, and she wondered why she was slipping when it had become a habit to lie about it for so long. She realized she didn't know how this powerful orderite woman would react to Raemos being her kin.

“Er...” she said, wary now, “You don't mind, right?”

The word Vona swallowed “B--” must have almost said boyfriend! Kadryn smiled as she completely misunderstood what Vona had been about to say. Why would she think that Vona had said brother when they were of different races and nether a hybrid?

"I can certainly do that," She said as she walked over to heft the young boy over her shoulder then gave a quick thrust of her wings to jump to the top of the Karagoth. "Where are you two headed? I'll take you there since he doesn't seem to be able to defend himself much less all of you!" But he was trying and doing his best despite his obvious exhaustion. Kadryn approved of it; friends should stick together! And it was sweet how he tried his best to protect his sweetheart.

“O... I mean, My parent's ranch, just that way.” Vona stretched her shoulders – her brother was lighter than he looked, thankfully, but he was still too heavy for the tailor.

Well... she thought assessingly as she walked over to her kargoth and pat the great beast's thick skin, She doesn't seem hostile to Oblivionites...

Even for Vona, it was difficult to think of him as an Oblivionite. Usually, anyway.

“Thank you... We need to get there, fast.. O...” there it was again, that slip up, “... My father was injured, you see...”

Raemos was a little embarrassed to be carried like a sack of grain, but he was too tired – and too rational – to protest as he was carried off.

Kadryn was quite happy to hear that the girl’s parents didn’t mind her courting (or being courted by) an oblivionite. Ice to know there were good folks like her own out there! At least they live out here where it’s easier to openly visit, unlike the village where Kirosh had to keep hidden all the time.

“I’ll fly alongside and keep an eye out for any more Mara,” Kadryn said with a smile as she set Raemos down and hopped off to land down next to Vona. “Need a hand up as well?”
She looked around and saw that a lot of material was still in good shape.. she could use some of that metal and it wasn’t too bent or shredded!
“While you get settled on the Karrgoth, I’ll gather up the supplies… Do you think your beast can carry them as well? Flying with a heavy load of rocks and metal is difficult… If not than we can leave it behind since there's no reason to delay getting you back home.” Especially not if her family was injured! Loot was nice, but I can always come back and get it.

She could probably do it… but it’d strain her wings and make it harder to respond to attacks.. or I can just drop the rocks on anything that attacks. She smiled at that idea. That would be rather fun!
