Dean softened automatically. He couldn’t tell what was happening to Cas from the sound of his labored breathing. He didn’t know exactly what happened when he saw the angel/meteor shower, but he could guess so much: Castiel had lost some, if not all of his powers, and if he was now vulnerable to human afflictions, Dean wasn’t about to let him hyperventilate. He also heard a cat and thought it was strange but that was beside the point: “Cas, you okay? Calm down, what’s happening? We can discuss our crap later, tell me exactly where you are, I’m off to get you. Cas?”
He heard a female voice over the phone echoing his concerns about Castiel’s health and was beyond perplexed. “Seriously Cas, tell me what’s going on!”

"Ow!" Castiel nearly fell forward into the pay phone when the orange struck his head but he caught himself. His panicked rapid breathing turned to the labored breaths of surprise induced adrenaline.

The surprise quickly faded, his breath slowing accordingly, when Diana rushed to his side. The kitsune's ministrations, though a little awkward, soothed him back to his regular rhythms.

"Thank you... I have no idea what happened-" Castiel thanked the kitsune and began asking about what had just occurred to him before remembering he was on the phone with Dean. "Dean!"

His furry friend nuzzled gently at the angel's hand and without thinking Castiel began petting the kitten. The soft fur and the purring were very reassuring.

"Dean. He lied to me. Metatron, that is. I wasn't doing the Angel Trials. I was... I was helping him with a spell and I... He used my grace to expel all the angels from Heaven..." Castiel gritted out the last few words. It seems telling the story again and again did not make it easier to tell.

Dean took deep breaths as he listened to Castiel’s account of the events that had shaken their lives once again. It was a lot to take in. Metatron? That angel with an uncomfortable amount of love for books and who seemingly lacked a spine, just caused the fall of all heavenly creatures to Earth? He couldn’t blame Cas for believing he had good intentions, who would have thought? But he was still frustrated with the angel (ex angel now, he thought bitterly) for falling into a trap yet again. But hearing Cas’ panicked tone, it suddenly occurred to him that surely he already felt like a mountain of crap about it. Helping someone bring down your entire kind certainly did not feel awesome. Dean refrained from calling Castiel out about this.
“Listen Cas,” He said in a soft yet urgent tone “As I said, we’ll talk about that later. I’m off to get you, I want you safe as soon as possible. I already have an idea where you might be with the area code. Get that woman, whoever that is, to help you find a place to stay. You call my cell, you know which, with your exact location as soon as you can.” He then said the next sentence loud enough, he hoped, for said woman to hear him “I’m trusting you blindly here because there’s nothing else I can do. You lay a hand on my friend, God help me, I’ll make you wish you were never born. You both copy?”

Diana's face wrinkled at that, and she couldn't help the sneer that crossed her lips, even if the man on the other side of the phone couldn't hear here.

"What makes you think I would want to hurt your friend Mr. Pissy?" She spoke loud enough so that the grumpy man could hear her. "Better not make threats like that if we meet or I might just accidentally fireball your a**."

Castiel pulled the phone away from his ear slightly in disbelief at Dean's protective threat. After all the too many times that Castiel had failed so disastrously in the past Dean's never been very understanding, especially so quickly. The angel was torn between joyous relief and fearing that fate was setting him up for another fall.

Diana's disgruntled words jarred the angel out of his stupor, "Sorry, Diana. I can't make any promises but please don't hurt him when..." Cas trailed off when he recalled the other reason for this call. "Oh! Dean? About my companion. She's a kitsune, Dean, but please behave when we meet! I know I'm a terrible judge of character but she saved my life and... she stayed despite my giving her many reasons to go. So please, Dean. Be nice..."

“Mr Pissy? A Kitsu- wh- ?!” Dean managed to stutter despite his disbelief. His own voice inside his head whispered “Benny, man, Benny” and he sighed. He said with noticeable annoyance “I’m too exhausted to give a crap” then before hanging up he said to Castiel “See you later man, just don’t… anyway, bye.”.
He stood there with the phone in his hand for a couple moments, then dialed the number for the Smith County Memorial Hospital, where Sam was still floating between life and death. He gave the receptionist his phone number (he wasn’t crazy, his other, other phone) and made sure they called him if anything came up. He made his way to his room (he still loved the sound of it, “his room”) to pack a few things, then went up the stairs to the door leading outside. As he sat behind the wheel of the Impala, he glanced at the empty seat beside him and said out loud “Just know I’m not giving up on you Sammy, I will find a way to put you back on your feet. Hang in there until I do. I’ll be right back with our friend.” He ignited the engine which produced a familiar and comforting roar, and proceeded to drive westward.

Castiel blinked at the hunter's parting words, spacing out for a moment until the dial tone reminded him to hang up the phone.

That attitude was definitely more like Dean, which should have relieved Cas but didn't. Also Cas was finally going to see him again, which should have elated the angel but didn't. Castiel couldn't help but feel uneasy about his entire situation but had no idea why or how to make it alright.

"I'm going to give him a minute before calling the number he gave me to give him our location..." Cas gently pet the kitten that had curled up in the corner under the phone for a nap. Upon feeling fur beneath his skin the feline immediately started purring.

It was soothing.

Diana glanced around as they spoke, Shade had grown bored of his game of 'scare random pigeons' and was once again perched on her shoulder. Several people were now moving about, but as of yet not a single one of them showed any interest in there location.

"So find an inn first, or wait until Mister Pissy calls back?"

Castiel was about to disagree, since he needed to call Dean back with his location, but then reason kicked in: They were currently mobile and had no real address to give. They needed a specific location to give Dean and a motel would give them shelter and a phone.

Besides, he didn't think they had any coin left.

"Sounds like a good plan."

He gently, though more confidently then before, scooped up the kitten from the ledge under the pay phone. Cradling the kitty, he began to look around for a motel, like the Winchester stayed at.

The feline in his arms batted, though the angel didn't realize his bundle was reaching to play with the ratty pages of the phone book.

Diana walked close enough to Castiel so that she could nudge him with her shoulder, once to see if he was paying attention, and then harder to try and get him to stop staring off into space.

"So we just gunna stand here like targets, or do want to go with the inn searching part? Either way it's getting dark out so we need to make a choice soon, unless humans can see in the dark now?"

"Wha..?" Castiel startled to attention. "Right. Sorry. Let's see..."

The angel glanced around quickly, pondering how best to proceed. When Dean and Sam needed a place to stay they normally drove around until they located a motel but they didn't have a vehicle...

The phone book!

When the Winchesters were on foot they would use the phone book to find the nearest motel.

Castiel quickly located the nearby sign post for their location before spinning on his heel to pull out the phone. His furry friend scampered up onto his shoulder freeing up his other hand.

"Okay..." Mumbled the angel as he flipped through the pages. "Alright. There's a Sleep Easy motel a couple blocks from here..."

Thankfully it had not been a long walk to the motel. Diana's nose wrinkled a bit as she took in the hideous decorations and questionable smells, though thankfully at least the smells were very light, light enough a human would not have noticed them.

"Hope your friend gets here soon," Diana grumbled once the door closed. "This acting like a human thing is getting quite old, even if they did seem to believe the whole the whole, I'm your nice thing, the truth would be much more unbelievable to anyone."

"I've found humanity to excel at denial, especially when it comes to the... 'Supernatural'. Even when it's tearing them limb from limb they don't believe..." said Castiel, not in a praising nor disapproving manner, just stating his observations.

He took a pillow from one of the beds and placed it on the floor right next to bed frame. The angel smoothed it out before gently setting his furry friend upon it. The kitten purred as it kneaded his cushion.

"Strange that despite this I've worked to not only protect them, but to be... accepted by them, I suppose." the angel got to his feet, stretching slightly. "I need to call Dean."

"Some humans were quite fun in this world, back when they still believe. Children were the best, though even they seem to have forgotten. Some were quite accepting, others not to much, though to be fair I guess many of us didn't make it easy."

Diana watched as Castiel made a nest for his new kitten. Shade had taken off, the large raven wasn't to found of being confined, not that Diana blamed him this time, she still wasn't to sure about some of the smells.

Castiel flinched at the last of the kitsune's words, as it included him, but recovered quickly. He picked up the worn motel phone from it's receiver and dialed the number Dean gave him. With every tone, his anxiety grew.
