Aerie's breath caught, and she looked around at the lake and the lily pads, and tears started streaming down her face. She knew this was coming, she had known since she was a little girl that someday she would marry Darren. Looking back at him, she smiled through her tears.

"Of course I will, you goof."

She accepted the ring, and when he got up, she launched herself into his arms and kissed him.

"I have been waiting my entire life to hear those words....I'm so happy, Darren."

Darren smiled, hearing Aerie saying of course. He even grinned at the teasing. Even as a prince, Aerie treated him as an equal...he loved that. Most of the time people tried to manipulate him, or plead loyalty to him. He kissed back passionately. "I know. I'm glad I made you happy." he said.

Darren picked her up and spun her around. "I love you, Aerie. I love you." he said. "I want to take you on a date. A nice one, not in secret."

Aerie smiled at him. She was happy that he wanted to do so much for her, and it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders the minute she realized that she was safe from her future father-in-law.

"That sounds...nice...but Darren, we need to go back to the castle and announce the engagement...you can't avoid facing him forever."

She faced him and smiled, grasping both of his hands.

"And I'll be right next to you...we can get through this together."

Darren sighed. "I know...but I don't like facing him for normal activities. How do you think he's gonna react finding out I'm marrying the one he tried to kill, and thought he finally ran off?" he said, but continued walking with her to the castle. He looked slightly nervous, as he always did when he had to confront his father about a subject he knew hew wouldn't approve.

Aerie sighed, and walked with him, her hand tucked in the crook of his elbow.

"Darren, I'll be right next to you. If you expect to be King, you need to be able to face your fears...even if it means possibly losing me."

She smiled reassuringly as they made their way toward the palace, and then took a deep breath as they made their way into the throne room. Soon, all hell would break loose, and it was now or never.

"I'm ready when you are, my love."

She gripped onto him tighter, her expression going stony as they stepped into the throne room in sync.

Darren nodded, knowing this was true, but hating it all the same. He hated conflict that involved him, even if it was going to be part of his job. He kissed Aerie's head before they stepped into the throne room, drawing several gazes. Those who recognized Aerie gasped, and the petite blonde also drew several jealous gazes from noblewomen who hoped to marry Darren.

Darren met his father's eyes, and though the man's expression only tightened a bit, there was rage in his eyes.

"Son, what is this? I thought you said she ran off." he said, eerily calm.

Darren shook his head. "She didn't. Father, I did this to protect her. I love Aerie, and she will be my Queen. Any attempt to harm her will be treason, and offenders will be sentenced to death, just as the law says." Darren said, his voice steady. This was perfect timing. Saying it to the former king, in front of just about every nobleman/woman, and several commoners. They'd all hear Aerie was to become Darren's Queen, and nobody was to hurt her.

Aerie stiffened next to him. She took a deep breath and met the King's gaze, and squeezed Darren's hand before letting go and stepping forward, her eyes still trained on her soon-to-be father's.

"With all due respect, your majesty, I don't plan on going anywhere. If this doesn't prove that love triumphs over anything, then I don't know how else to break it to you."

She kept her face devoid of any emotion while she spoke to him.

"I plan to stay by Darren's side forever, even after death."

Darren smiled proudly at his fiancΓ©e, the girl who was soon to be his wife. She faced up to his father fearlessly, keeping her face blank, her voice strong. He nodded in agreement to Aerie's words. He looked at his father, trying not to shake with rage, furious at his son for outsmarting him, for tricking him into teaching him seriously, learning the inner workings of the castle and politics. They both knew he was trapped. Instead of ordering the death of the peasant girl, he merely plastered a smile on his face, and welcomed Aerie, saying he was sure she would make a great Queen. He told the servants to begin preparations for the royal wedding, making the nobles cheer, all happy and most clueless of how close their king had been to snapping, and how hard it'd been to set everything up.

The young woman smiled out of relief. She knew that she may never get the love of her father-in-law, but she knew that at some point in her life, she could at least earn his respect. Someday the old man will understand that the most important thing was that his son was happy, and that he could trust him to make rational decisions. Aerie looked over at Darren and took his hand again.

"It's finally happening, Darren."

She looked around the ballroom, and watched her father-in-law bark out orders to the servants about the wedding. Soon she would be a part of the royal family. Soon, she would have the chance to maybe earn some respect. And soon, she would not have to worry about losing Darren to another woman ever again.

Darren nodded. He knew there wouldn't be any love between them; not even Darren got his father's love, but all he could hope for was respect of the way they ruled. Darren's father needed to step down soon after the marriage. After their honeymoon, so the couple had their time together to be happy and be together for...however long it lasted. Aerie came over and held his hand, and Darren raised their joined hands to his lips and kissed Aerie's. "It is. And it worked perfectly." he said. He pulled her close, smiling as he watched the servants mill around, and the nobles were dismissed to wish the happy couple well, and to go to their own homes to prepare what they were going to bring, and what to wear, and spread the word. As with all royal weddings, the whole kingdom celebrated, and anyone could attend the ball thrown to celebrate their wedding. Normally there was an engagement party as well, but they've obviously been engaged for a while, or already engaged by the ring on Aerie's finger.

Aeriella waited anxiously by the double doors to the throne room. Beyond those doors were her future subjects, her future parents, and of course, her husband and future king.
She stood, gowned in a pearl white, lace and silk flowing around her. Her gown, embellished with gold and diamonds.

When the doors opened, her breath caught and she looked up from the bouquet of roses she held in her hands and willed her feet to move. There was no turning back now. Soon, she would be Crown Princess Aeriella Mae Keen, and soon enough, she would be Queen of the kingdom that she had called 'home' for her entire life.

She looked up and met the eyes of her beloved, her heart skipping a beat as she moved forward. At that moment, it was only him she saw, and not the countless number of subjects she was bypassing along the aisle.

Darren was rather nervous himself, in the throne room at the end of the asile. He fidgeted and tugged at his uniform. He wanted to wear a regular suit, but he was forced to wear this military uniform. He sighed, constantly checking the clock, and the doors, even though he knew she wouldn't be in early.

When it finally was time, the doors opened, and Darren's breath caught in his throat. Aeriella...she was beautiful. Darren stood properly, his eyes on her, never straying. He had a small smile on his face. His Queen...he was so glad to have her.
