Producers are the worst though. Even some of the most well-known directors have to cater to producers' every whims. Unless you're Tarantino or Spielberg or something, it doesn't matter what you say, even as a director because a producer can veto anything.

A hars lesson taught to us at school. Any field in the media is super harsh unless you're completely independent.

I'm going to politely but firmly disagree with this. While 'commercial' music is increasingly lower in quality, there are many smaller bands/musicians who are making amazing music. There's even more opportunity to release music nowadays, with resources like Kickstarter.

Also, when we look at past decades and praise the music, we are not necessarily looking at a true sample of what people were listening to/what played on the radio. In 40 years people may still remember bands like Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers and say all music from the 2010s was great, while forgetting the Katy Perry/Rihanna/whatever.
