Damien rose to answer the door, but a gesture from his father stopped him. He scowled. He knew where this was going, and he didn't really care for it much. He should be the one greeting his girlfriend and her parents. But, he had no choice to obey his father's wishes. He wanted this night to go well; an argument about propriety would not get it off to a good start.

Brownie gave her masters a smile as she passed them by, offering the younger a quiet reassurance that the evening would go well. She then headed straight for the door. Unlike many House-Elves, Brownie and her counterparts were treated with the same respect as any human household help would be. Much to Dahlia's disdain, they were welcome in the houses main areas, even while guests were present, and while their clothes were worn, they didn't look like the usual filthy curtains many were forced to wear. The Edgeworths had been very good to their help since Master Wesley had taken over.

Brownie answered the door with a light bow, and a gracious smile.
"Allow me to be welcoming you into our homes, Aldred Family. I am the Brownie, the Head of House Elves in Edgeworth's Home. The Masters Wesley and Damien are waiting for you in the Parlor Room. I am to be taking you there now." Brownie's first impression of her Master Damien's girlfriend was that she was very, very pretty, which made her very happy. Her second impression was that the girl was nervous. Brownie didn't quite understand that at first. She'd already met Master Wesley, so why would she be nervous to see him again? It dawned on the elf that perhaps Marina was nervous about what her own parents would think of her Master Damien. That led Brownie to look the two over... The mother seemed calm, but the father... Brownie didn't think he was quite sold on Master Damien just yet. Well, then! Brownie would just have to make sure that tonight was the best night she could possibly make it, so that her Masters left a good impression. She led them all to the Parlor with a smile.

Damien was on his feet before the group had even entered the room, and looked to his father out of the corner of his eye. When Wesley gave a small nod, Damien approached them all, offering Marina a nervous, shaky smile. He was the one being tested tonight, after all. He gave a slight, stiff bow to her parents, then realized that perhaps that might be a bit too formal. So, he extended a hand, cursing it for having a slight tremor. God, he was nervous. "Hello, Mister and Missus Aldred. It's lovely to meet you both." He turned to Marina, his expression softening, some of the nervousness dissipating when he realized how very pretty she looked tonight. He reached for her hand and brought it to his lips, kissing her knuckles lightly. He supposed that might not have been the best move, considering that he'd literally just introduced himself to her parents, but he'd been taught it was the appropriate gesture in such a situation. He offered her a smile. "Good evening, Marina," he said, his voice low, emotional. He hadn't really realized how much he'd missed seeing her until just now. And she looked beautiful. He wanted to grab her and kiss her, but was able to fight the urge, thankfully. He was sure that would go over well, shaking their hands and then throwing himself on their daughter. He satisfied himself with the kiss to her hand.

Wesley had risen just after his son, knowing that, while the Aldreds would likely be judging him as well tonight, Damien was really the one who needed to make a good impression. So, he'd lingered behind, giving the boy an opportunity to make his own introductions. Wesley watched carefully, noting how well Damien was comporting himself. Not a single action out of place, just as he'd been taught. He was a bit shaky, but that was to be expected when he had someone to impress. Particularly given the circumstances; Wesley knew that their family didn't have the best reputation when it came to Halfbloods. Wesley was pleased with his son's overall performance. It seemed that the lessons he'd offered the boy hadn't gone unheeded. Good. Once Damien's own introductions were out of the way, he stepped forward, an imposing but gentlemanly figure over his son's shoulder. He offered a hand to Dustin Aldred, and kissed the knuckles of his wife. "Wesley Jackson Edgeworth. A pleasure to meet you both, Mister and Missus Aldred. Welcome. Won't you join us in the Parlor? The Elves are still working on dinner." That was by design. Once they retired to the Dining Hall, food would interrupt conversation, at least a bit. Wesley wanted them all to have a moment to speak unhindered before they retired to their meal. He gestured towards the room, which had been deliberately arranged so that Damien and Marina could sit together on the love seat, while Wesley sat to one side of them and the Aldreds sat together to the other.

Damien made the now-familiar gesture of offering Marina his arm and led her to the love seat, knowing that it'd been his father's intention that they sit together. He wasn't quite sure about that; wasn't sure what her parents would think of it. But, his father knew better than he did, and so he decided it would be best to follow his lead.

                                                          ════════════════════════════════════════════════

Marina actually looked down in surprise when the door was answered by a house elf. She knew she really shouldn't be surprised that they had a house elf, but she'd never exactly met one before. The redhead smiled at Brownie, as did her parents. "Hello Brownie. It's very nice to meet you," Bernadette said gently. The Aldreds followed the elf into the home, Marina going first, secretly tremendously excited to be seeing her boyfriend again.

Her eyes landed on Damien first off, though she did notice his father in the background. For a second she just stared at him, noting his shaky smile. He was nervous. A small, delighted grin crept onto her face while her parents shook his hand, both offering the poor boy a smile, though Bernadette's was one of soft reassurance and Dustin's was experimental, like he was trying out smiling at the boy dating his daughter. Marina hoped it wasn't going to be a rare occurrence.

She literally shuddered at feeling of his lips on her knuckles, and her smile stretched even wider. "Good evening Damien," she replied, her voice just a bit breathless. Dustin and Bernadette looked on at the two, and then exchanged a glance. It was pretty obvious the teenagers were completely enthralled with each other at the moment.

Dustin shook Wesley's hand promptly, waiting to form an opinion on the man. He was inclined to think well of him, but he was inclined to think well of everyone, it being his nature. Perhaps with the exception of boys interested in his little girl, but that was currently undecided. "It's very nice to meet you as well, Mr. Edgeworth." he spoke, and Bernadette nodded in agreement, a hand on her husband's arm.

Marina followed Damien to the love seat, taking his arm, and for once managing not to blush because she was currently under the scrutiny of her parents' gaze, which was probably just the typical look parents gave their children when they were with company, but it only served to make her more self conscious. She sat, as did her parents together to the side. Okay. So far, so good.

Brownie gave a sort of happy little chirping sound when Bernadette greeted her. Most of the guests in their home looked at her like the Mistress Edgeworth did. She'd rather been expecting for the company to look at her with distaste and then completely ignore her, or offer a curt, somewhat rude greeting. She should have known that any company invited by Master Damien, particularly the family of the girl he was dating, wouldn't be like that. She followed them all into the Parlor and gave a small curtsy. "I shall be going to do the overseeing of the preparations for the dinner, sirs and ladies. I will be returning for you all when the food is being ready." And with that, she left the room, leaving the two families alone.

Damien shifted a bit uncomfortably. He could feel her parents, particularly her father, watching them. Watching him. Looking for even the slightest hint that he was a less than acceptable boy for their daughter to associate with. It was unnerving. He tried to think of a way to break the silence, but couldn't seem to manage it. He was far too nervous; he knew that if he spoke, his voice would shake. It was unbecoming. He waited and waited for his nerves to die down enough for him to manage some sort of conversation, but each second that ticked away made it grow. His face grew paler than usual. This had to go well... and thus far, he felt like he'd made a neutral impression at best on Marina's parents. Not good. He wanted them to like him, or at least approve of him.

Wesley gave Damien a couple of minutes to try and speak, but decided that the boy was far too nervous. There was a lot of pressure on him, after all. The Aldreds made no move to being interrogating him, which was good, but they wouldn't form much of an opinion of the boy if they didn't speak to him. As of right now, all they would be able to discern was that he was fond of Marina, which they already knew, and that he'd been raised in an old-fashioned manner. Not bad things to know about a boy, but hardly anything to pass judgement on. Wesley cleared his throat to break the silence, and offered Marina a smile. "Marina, my dear, how has your Summer been? Pleasant, I hope?" A safe enough subject, and one to hopefully get the two kids talking. It might ease the tension a bit if they were able to talk to one another.

Marina wasn't sure whether to be amused or worried about how nervous her boyfriend was. He was unnaturally paler than usual and hadn't actually said anything yet. Okay, how scary could her parents be? They weren't exactly threatening looking. Was he really that terrified of them not approving of him? Even if they didn't, which she highly doubted, what were they going to do? Forbid her to see him? Not likely, unless they wanted to go deaf from the amount of protesting she would do. She gave him a slightly concerned look, and squeezed his hand, and then glanced at her parents.

Dustin and Bernadette were both slightly worried about Damien, who looked like he might pass out or something. Was he ill, or just that nervous about making a good impression? They didn't exactly have one, since he hadn't really said anything. The two shared a covert look, before looking at Wesley when he spoke addressing Marina.

Their daughter looked towards Damien's father. "Oh, yes. Very pleasant. And boring. My parents have been putting me to work cleaning our house," the redhead spoke lightly, giving her mother and father a teasing look.

"Nonsense, you're building character," said Dustin with an amused grin.

"By going through old boxes of things?"

"Well there'd be no more room for your hundreds of books if we didn't get rid of things from time to time," Bernadette spoke up, her voice laced with quiet humor. She looked to Wesley and Damien. "She has so many books she can't even fit them all in her room, and she insists on keeping all of her old children's books and textbooks as well."

Marina nodded. "They're strictly for sentimental purposes. And I can't bear to throw out a book. It's practically criminal."

Damien relaxed a bit and even laughed at Marina's expression when she spoke of her books. He had to agree; he hadn't really had many storybooks as a child, but those he did possess were even now carefully put away in one of their many, many extra rooms for posterity. "Well, it's always nice to keep things from when you were little. They make nice keepsakes for when you have children." As soon as the word left his mouth, Damien realized that perhaps, just perhaps, saying the word 'children' was not the best thing to do in front of your girlfriends parents, particularly when you were meeting them for the first time. His mind raced as he tried to come up with some sort of additional comment to cover up how forward that had seemed. At least he hadn't said 'they'll make a good gift for our children' or anything foolish like that. It took him a mere second to cover his tracks. "I know that most of my things from childhood were my fathers. Mostly old books, actually. Of course, books tend to keep better. I know that most of the toys from when Father was younger are antiques now. Not really suitable for playing with." There. Now it was more like an anecdote, just part of the conversation. And less like some weird insinuation that the children reading those books would be theirs. As opposed to hers. Or, hers and somebody else's. Although the second that thought crossed his mind, he immediately rejected it. So they were a little young to think about that, and so they'd only been together for... well, they'd been together almost a year, which was actually a sort of long time considering their age, but still. The point was, children should not be crossing his mind at all... but he was still entitled to get aggravated at the thought of her having children with someone else.

Wesley smiled as he listened to the family's banter. There were times he wished he could have been raised differently so he could have something like that with another person. But, life had dealt him his hand, and he had to play with it. At least he'd been gifted with a son who was able to grow past the restrictions placed on him. Wesley found that he was jealous of his son for having both the wisdom to turn against the old ways and the courage to fight for his decision. It was, of course, what ultimately made Wesley decide to see things his way. He still had trouble at times, but he thought he was doing remarkably well for someone who'd been how he'd been for so very long. He smirked a bit when Damien flubbed a bit and brought up children. That wasn't a particularly appropriate topic, but Damien had handled it very well. And really, he hadn't been the one to bring it up, after all. Bernadette had. Damien was just working with the conversation he'd been given. And he'd done quite well, Wesley thought. He nodded as his son mentioned his old books and toys. "I do believe there was one toy that was properly preserved. My old stuffed wolfhound, do you recall? You slept with it every night until... age six? Or was it seven?" Wesley scowled as he realized that he couldn't properly place the age Damien had been when he'd grown out of his need for a companion at night... or when he'd stopped being afraid of the dark... or when he'd done anything, really. Aside from the summer after his first year, Wesley had never really paid attention to his son... it bothered him to recall this. He should have been more involved.

Marina could have actually face palmed when Damien brought up children by accident. Sure, her parents probably found it more amusing than anything else, but thinking about kids, about her having kids was a bit unsettling. She'd never even been around small children before, not having any siblings, and her cousins, whom she rarely saw, were all around her age, not really kids anymore. Would she even make a good mother? It was a little worrying, so she pushed the thought away. "I have Dad's old toy broom. Not that I ever rode it," she spoke up with a small laugh. A good portion of her childhood had consisted of her father trying to get her to ride the broom and her stubbornly refusing. Flying was never going to appeal to her, at least not on a extremely skinny, fragile looking piece of wood. Not happening.

Dustin shook his head. "It's alright. I forgive you for not carrying on my Quidditch legacy." He looked to Wesley and Damien. "I was a beater for Hufflepuff for a few years at Hogwarts. Unfortunately Marina never took a liking to it."

"Oh, but what's not to like about hitting bludgers at people?" the redhead asked in mock seriousness.

Bernadette stifled a laugh, and patted her husband on the back comfortingly.

Marina smirked as a stuffed toy was mentioned. "You had a stuffed wolfhound? That's so... cute." She poked him gently in the side. "Were you scared of the dark?" she asked teasingly.

Dustin and Bernadette gave her a look. "This from the girl who had a stuffed tiger until she was nine." Dustin pointed out.

She blushed. "He didn't even have a name."

"Yes, because you just called him Tiger."

Wesley nodded when Marina and her father play-bickered over brooms and Quidditch. Wesley had never been one to enjoy or care for sports. He'd never had any desire to get all sweaty and dirty, flying after balls and things. But, he knew that it was a popular pastime, and he could understand the interest in following the sport. But, he couldn't help but be a tad pleased that Marina wasn't interested in it, either. She was dating his son, after all, and he would hate to think of Damien being distraught over her being injured in a game for barbarians. "I never played, but I did go to a few games while I was in school. It always off-put me how violent it all was. But, being a Beater, you must have been right in the eye of the storm, of course. I'm afraid I wouldn't have lasted two seconds in a game." When Marina teasingly asked Damien if he'd been afraid of the dark, Wesley held his tongue. He knew that many parents would take the opportunity to tease their child, but he didn't feel the need. Damien was quite nervous enough without having that added on top of it all. Although, he was doing a fairly good job of handling himself.

Damien listened to his father's comments on Quidditch, hoping that Dustin wasn't offended. If he'd been so proud of his game that he'd wanted Marina to follow in his footsteps, it was a good chance that negative comments about the sport would get one on his bad side. He hoped that the man was light-hearted enough to laugh it off and say that not everyone was cut out for it. When Marina asked if he'd been afraid of the dark, he blushed. He had been, until he was six. He'd stopped sleeping with his wolfhound when he was seven. His mother had tried to take it away when he'd turned five, but he'd been plagued by nightmares. He'd run to her rooms each night, crying. Rather than being a proper mother and tending to him, she'd passed him off to Brownie and, after a couple months, given him the toy back. "I hardly think it matters if I were. Most children were. And I'm not anymore." The mention of Marina's own stuffed animal made him smile. "Tiger. That's very creative. However did you come up with it?" He anticipated some sort of retaliation from her, but he'd take it. It was worth it to see her expression. Her blush. It was so cute.

Brownie reappeared then and, like a proper House-Elf, waited for the guests to have a chance to respond to the conversation before offering a small curtsy. "Dinner is ready, if you would all please follow me to the Dining Room." She turned and waited for them all to gather themselves and follow her down the hallway.

Damien stood and offered Marina his arm with a silent smile.

Marina looked to her father at Wesley's comments, a grin playing at her lips. Dustin shrugged. "I got injured plenty of times, that's for sure. It's definitely not for everyone. I'm the only one in the household who actually follows it."

Bernadette laughed softly. "The teams you follow never actually win, that's why."

Marina's devilish grin spread wider at Damien's blush, but she looked slightly indignant at his comment. "Was that sarcasm, Damien? That's no fair, only I'm allowed to be sarcastic. And I think it's a very logical name. It was a tiger. I called it Tiger." she nodded sagely, and tried to resist the urge to suddenly kiss him. That might be pushing it, with her parents and his father sitting right there.

All three Aldreds looked at Brownie as she suddenly reappeared and curtseyed. Marina rose, and took Damien's arm, and her parents stood as well, prepared to follow the house elf.

Brownie lead the group down the hall with a smile, glad that things seemed to be going so well. Master Damien seemed to be fairly happy, although he was a bit nervous. She smiled at that. He was so cute. She opened the door to the Dining Room and curtsied at the door, gesturing for them to enter. "The first course will the Lobster Bisque, with an alternative of Beef Stew for any with an allergy or dislike of shellfish." The addition of an alternate had been her idea, just in case. She knew that Lobster Bisque was Master Wesley's favorite, but many had an aversion to shellfish, and it wouldn't have been proper for their guests to have to sit through a course because their preference or limitations hadn't been taken into account.

Damien led Marina into the Dining Room and pulled a chair from the table two chairs from the head of the table, on the right side. As heir, he was to sit on his father's right, he reminded himself. Technically, Marina would actually sit next to her mother, three seats over the left, but he wanted her beside him. Besides, with her to his right, the table would be symmetrical. He didn't know why that was important to him, but it was. He offered a smile as he waited for her. Once she was seated, he took his own chair. He hoped that his father hadn't gone too over the top with dinner. He didn't want to impress her parents with his wealth and breeding; he wanted them to like him. And they wouldn't if they thought he and his father were snobs. Which, perhaps they were, a bit, but that was hardly their defining characteristic.

Wesley waited until his guests were seated before taking his place at the head of the table, noting Damien's decision to seat Marina next to him. Interesting. That wasn't the convention, wasn't what he'd been taught. They hadn't discussed the seating arrangements for the evening. Wesley supposed that Damien was Marina's escort, which would place her to his right rather than her mother's left. But it was still interesting to note. A defiance, perhaps? A rejection of tradition? Or had Damien simply not thought of it and wanted his girlfriend seated with him? Not that it mattered; Wesley didn't really care. His mother would have a fit, of course, but then, she wasn't here, now was she? Unfaithful, hated shrew. Wesley pushed her from his mind as he smiled at his guests. "I do hope the meal selection is to your liking. I wasn't sure what you would prefer, so I simply chose meals I knew that Damien and I preferred. If any of you find anything adverse, I can of course arrange for a substitute. Providing that my House-Elves haven't already thought of it," he added, with a twinkle in his eye and a glance at Brownie.

It's just another war: Determined | Just another family torn: It's going to go fine... | Just a step from the edge: Dustin and Bernadette | Just another day in the world we live in: Edgeworth Manor| Wearing

Marina sat in the chair Damien pulled out for her, happy to be seated beside him. So far things had been going pretty well. Her parents hadn't gone all interrogatory on him, and nobody had said anything stupid. Maybe, just this once, her good luck would hold. "I'll have the Beef Stew, thanks," she spoke up politely. She wasn't allergic to shellfish, but she'd never really liked the taste of it either. She knew her parents didn't mind it all, though, and were probably quite happy to be eating lobster for once.

Bernadette smiled. "It's sounds great, thank you." Dustin nodded, and then glanced at Brownie. "Thank you, Brownie." Both of Marina's parents had thus far seen Damien and his father as pleasant people, but both did wonder about Damien's mother. Marina hadn't mentioned anything about it, and they certainly weren't going to. Maybe the woman was deceased, or simply not around anymore. It wasn't their place to pry, anyways.

The doors to the Dining Room slammed open then, and Dahlia Vivian Edgeworth stormed in, stopping just short of the table, her eyes looking over those seated there, her arms crossed, an imperious sneer on her face. She speared her son with that look for a moment before looking at the girl at his side. The halfblood. The little brat who'd undone all her years of teaching, of nurturing him to know right and wrong. To know that he was better than her. Dahlia couldn't understand it, looking at the girl. She was... pretty. But ordinary, hardly beautiful. Hardly the gorgeous fiend she'd imagined stealing her son away from her. Muddling his mind with her beauty and feminine wiles. How on Earth had she done it, then? "Good evening, Wesley," she said, addressing her husband with a cold tone. "How very rude of you to not inform me that we were to have guests. Of course, given the sort of guests you've invited, perhaps it was wise." She turned to the Aldred parents, her face turning cruel. "Filth. Filth in my home. How disgusting. I'm going to have to have the idiot Elves working for weeks to get all the dirt off of my furniture. Simply horrid." She then shot Marina a cold, cruel look, her eyes fierce and dangerous. "And you. Some filthy little halfblood whore, sitting at my table, with my son. How you managed it, I've no idea. You're not exactly attractive. A love potion, perhaps? It would certainly make all of this make sense." Her eyes flashed in awareness. "That's it, isn't it? You little brat, you slipped my son a love potion! How did I not see it sooner? You... you filth!" Dahlia pulled her wand and pointed it at Marina then, her intentions clear in her eyes, despite the crazed expression on her face.

Damien was on his feet the moment his mother entered the room, letting out a small curse under his breath. He'd thought they were safe; she'd left that night, just as she always did. And yet, here she was. When she began insulting Marina and her family, he paled. Great. Of course she would cause a scene. Of course she would ruin this for him. When she accused Marina of slipping him a love potion and pulled her wand, he immediately went for his own, pointing it at his mother with the intention of doing whatever it took to stop her from hurting Marina. Tonight was ruined; it wasn't as though he could make it any worse. As long as he didn't kill her, which he doubted he was capable of doing even if he wanted to.

Wesley sat at the head of the table through his wife's rant, his expression cold, but calm. He'd expected as much. He'd hoped that she was unaware of his dinner plans, but he'd been aware that she might make an appearance. No doubt she'd found a way to riffle through Damien's mail when he wasn't looking, had read the plans. He took a sip of his wine, and eyebrow lifted, his expression appearing for all the world as though he couldn't care less, in spite of the fact that his anger was boiling. "Dahlia, dear, if you're intent on joining us, drop your wand and have a seat. If not, or if you had a mind to continue insulting mine and Damien's guests," emphasis on the fact that the Aldreds were not, in any way, her guests, "then I'll have to ask you to leave. Now. We were having a perfectly lovely evening until you showed up and started shouting insults. Really, normally you have more class than this. But then again, you did send the poor girl a Howler in an attempt to scare her off, so you've already proven you're not nearly as classy as you'd like to think. As for your accusation that Marina used subversive tactics to attract our son, I'd suggest you keep such thoughts to yourself in the future. There's no need to showcase your lacking intelligence for the world to see. Anyone with half a brain could see that Damien is under no influence but his own." Another sip. He waited for her reaction, sure that she'd explode. His hand was on his wand, just in case she decided to be foolish and try and actually attack the Aldreds.

Dahlia shrieked then, hardly believing that Wesley was honestly sitting there, insulting her in front of the filth he'd allowed inside her home. She pointed her wand at him then, malicious intent in her eyes. "You! How dare you! You... you're as bad as the filth you let into your home! A fool, and not worth the indignation I've suffered for carrying your name!" She looked at Damien then, his wand pointed at her, and rolled her eyes. "And you! As if you've any clue what to do with that! Don't think I don't remember. You're a mediocre student at best, and you wouldn't know what spell to cast if your life depended on it! Put it down, or I'll make your filthy little brat of a girlfriend pay!"

A loud bang sounded then, and Dahlia flew back across the room, screaming all the while. She went through the open doors and slammed into the hallway wall with a thud. Brownie stood there, her arm raised, a finger pointed at Dahlia. Her face was fierce, and filled with anger. "Mistress Dahlia will stop, now! Masters Wesley and Damien are entertaining guests, and the Brownie has been asked to see to it that everything is nice for them, and Mistress Dahlia is ruining everything! She will leave! Now!"

Dahlia stood on shaky legs, glaring at the House-Elf. "Brownie, as Lady of the House, I demand that you punish yourself for that! Who do you think you are, ordering me about! I am your Mistress and you take orders from me! Not the other way around!"

Brownie shook her head with a smile and pointed her finger at Dahlia once again. Another bang was heard, and Dahlia flew down that hall. Brownie followed after her. "Brownie doesn't have to listen to Mistress Dahlia. Master Wesley ordered Brownie not to. So, now Brownie will say it again. Mistress Dahlia will remove herself from the dinner so that the Master's guests may enjoy dinner." Another bang. Then Brownie exited the Dining Room and closed the doors behind her.

Wesley smiled then, his eyes bright with humor. "I do apologize for my... wife. She hasn't adapted to Damien'd decision. Rather set in her ways. A pity. But rest assured that her attitude is not reflected in myself or my son. I am quite happy with Damien's decision, and proud of him for not allowing an outdated way of thinking restrict him. I'm... learning from him. And I am truly happy to have you in my home as my guests."

Damien listened to his father, sinking into his chair and placing his wand back up his sleeve. He hoped that the Aldreds wouldn't forbid Marina from seeing him after that. He glanced at her, keeping his voice low. "Don't listen to her, Marina. You're beautiful. And wonderful. And she's the filth, not you or your parents."

                                                          ════════════════════════════════════════════════

It's just another war: Furious | Just another family torn: You've got to be kidding me! | Just a step from the edge: Dustin and Bernadette | Just another day in the world we live in: Edgeworth Manor| Wearing

Marina jumped slightly at the slamming sound, and turned in her seat, just to see a tall, slender blonde woman come storming in. It took a few seconds before she realized that this must be Damien's infamous mother, Dahlia. Oh. Oh crap. So much for her good luck holding out. She was actually surprised to see how beautiful the woman actually was. In her mind, she'd been picturing some old hag, though she had known that most likely wasn't really what the woman looked like. But still. Dahlia Edgeworth could have been a model, but her pretty features were twisted up with fury. She certainly wasn't happy. Marina didn't even want to look and see the expressions on her parents' faces right now. She didn't even want to see what Damien's reaction was. Very slowly, she began to pull her wand out of her bag. Damn this dress. No pockets. But she gave herself a moment to listen to what the woman was saying, which was unpleasant, to say the least. She jumped straight into the blood related insults, which wasn't very surprising. And then the look she gave her! The redheaded girl stiffened, sat up even straighter than she already had been, and stared the woman directly back in the eyes with a look more lethal than cyanide. She was not a whore. She was a lot of things, and not all of them were something to be proud of, but she was not a whore. And she would never slip anyone a love potion! This lady was completely insane. She certainly looked it, as she pulled out her wand and pointed it at Marina.

But the Slytherin had hers out barely a millisecond after, pointed straight at the older woman, unwavering. She wasn't the new captain of the dueling club for nothing, and she'd been working on her draw. Marina managed to force back the considerable amount of anger she was feeling at the moment, and said nothing for a moment, just looking back at the older woman with a tranquil sort of fury. "Allow me to make one thing very clear to you, Mrs. Edgeworth. The only thing stopping me from blasting you right out of this room is that I don't need a criminal record, and I'm a guest in this home. But I suggest you put your wand away, before you embarrass your husband and son any further," she said in a tone dangerously close to a hiss. The stunning spell was on the very tip of her tongue.

Dustin and Bernadette sat there in shock, before a dark, understanding look passed between them. Both were fingering their own wands under the table, and looked ready to jump up and defend their daughter at a moment's notice. "We are not filth, our daughter is not a whore, and we don't need to worry about the Ministry coming down on our heads for hexing you," Dustin growled. Bernadette's blue eyes were burning with a sort of loathing for this horrid woman and her disgusting words.

But then Damien had jumped up in front of her, and Marina's vision was temporarily obscured. She stood up as well, still keeping her wand level with the woman's face. She winced a little as the topic of the Howler was brought up.

"You sent our daughter a Howler?!" Dustin and Bernadette snapped at the same time. What kind of right did she have to take it upon herself to humiliate their Marina?!

The redhead bristled when Dahlia insulted her boyfriend. "He's not mediocre, he's the smartest wizard I know!" she said through gritted teeth. "And where do you get off threatening me, you hag?!" Her brown eyes flashed, and she was just muttering a quiet protego, in case the b***h actually did try something, when she went flying out of the room. Literally.

All three Aldreds watched silently, shocked, as the woman was dressed down by her own house elf. And then blasted further away. And further. They stared at the spot where Dahlia had just been, before slowly sitting back down, and turning their attention to Wesley as he spoke.

"Thanks, Mr. Edgeworth," Marina said quietly. Dustin and Bernadette nodded slowly, still processing what had just happened. She gave Damien a small smile. "It's okay. Really. I know not to listen to her by now. Sorry for calling her a hag, by the way. I got kind of annoyed."

Wesley gave Marina a somewhat amused expression and shook his head. "No, I rather think it's appropriate. Hag. What a wonderful word. I can't believe I hadn't thought of it. But then, I've never really been one to name-call. Quiet threats have always been more my style." He offered his son a smile. "I had a feeling she'd make an appearance. It's why Brownie has been given such free reign with the evening. I put her in charge so that she could handle such an event for us. I believe she did beautifully, don't you, son?" Wesley might have been enacting a small revenge on her for the indignation she'd caused him with her rather public affair. It must positively boil her blood to be shown up by a House-Elf. Particularly one who she'd loathed for as long as she had dear Brownie. Besides, what better way to ensure that Wesley could still entertain guests than the place the responsibility of handling her in someone else's hand? He started in on his bisque, gesturing at his guests with his other hand. "Mister and Missus Aldred, please rest assured that she will not be causing any more problems tonight. I can't make any promises for the future, but then, I'm sure that the children can handle themselves should the need arise. I do hope that we might continue on into the evening without her presence darkening our moods?" It was very, very important to Wesley that, since his wife had made an appearance and showcased her prejudice to the Aldreds, they understand that he and his son were not of the same mind.

Damien had blushed a bit when Marina'd defended him. As he were the one who needed defending. He was used to her attitude, her hatefulness. But Marina... she shouldn't have had to sit through that. It wasn't fair to her. He looked down at his bowl of soup, listening to his father talk to that Aldreds. He waited until his father was done before speaking up. His father had mentioned the Howler, and they'd not known about it. Now they were no doubt furious. "She found out about me and Marina and decided to handle it herself. She sent Marina a Howler at the End of Term Feast that went of screaming and insulting her in front of the school. It was stupid, and petty. But she acted on her own, and my father had no idea until I told him about it. And he was furious when he found out." Damien wanted Marina's parents to know that his dad would have stopped her if he could. That he wasn't like her. He was terrified that they'd ask Marina to break up with him to protect her from his mother. He couldn't handle that; it would kill him.

Brownie reentered the room then, smiling and curtsying to their guests. "Mistress Dahlia has been interred in her room. She will not be bothering the dinner tonight." Brownie approached the Aldreds with a smile. "Is there anything the Brownie can do to make it up to you?"

Damien couldn't help but smile at Brownie. She always had the ability to improve his mood. He'd been so thankful for her the past few years... and realized how much he'd under-appreciated her as a child, when his mother had still seemed like a good person.

It's just another war: Furious | Just another family torn: You've got to be kidding me! | Just a step from the edge: Dustin and Bernadette | Just another day in the world we live in: Edgeworth Manor| Wearing

Marina cracked a wry grin at Wesley's response. "I thought as much. I think it was handled very appropriately. Don't you, Mum, Dad?" she addressed her parents, trying to gauge their current mood, as Damien's father spoke to them as well.

"Marina's always assuring us that she's perfectly capable, and we don't doubt her," Dustin said, with a reassuring glance at his daughter. He wasn't angry. Rather, he was quite impressed. He'd almost expected Damien to just sit there, but his daughter's boyfriend had jumped into action instead. And to the blonde man, actions spoke much louder than words.

Bernadette smiled at Damien as he explained the Howler incident. She certainly wasn't mad at the poor boy or his father, though she was furious at the very notion of another woman taking it upon herself to discipline her child for dating her son. "That was incredibly idiotic, but it's not you or your father's fault that your mother acted like that then, or tonight. And I, for one, am very glad Marina has a boyfriend willing to stand up for her."

Marina rolled her eyes a little, but Dustin simply added, "It was very brave of you," and even smiled at Damien. She gave her boyfriend a look, as if to say 'See, they like you.'

The Aldreds all gave Brownie a warm smile, grateful to the small elf for kicking out her mistress. "There's nothing to make up for. You did a great job of dealing with her," said Marina. She wished she could blast people out of rooms without the help of a wand. The redhead had never realized just how powerful house elves were.

To LIVE another DAY
SPEAKING my mind TODAY
My VOICE will be heard TODAY
